RE: V10 vs. Diesel Excursion

Thanks for your info Wes. I just put new tires on my truck a few weeks ago. I am going to take it up to the dealer I worked at to have it aligned. I will take to my buddy and see what the specs are on the toe.

RE: V10 vs. Diesel Excursion

2005 v10 excursion. No rear sway bar on it. 3:73 gears. I went across the scale at 16,000 gcvw. I have pulled mine down south twice with no sway what's so ever. Even in hi winds or when passing a semi. I am using a equalizer hitch and that's all. My trailer is 35ft long from hitch to bumper. When I was selling my f150 I wanted a diesel because of all the torque they have. I was looking for a dodge but decided the excursion was a better choice for the family. I worked at a ford dealer for 12 years as a mechanic and I could not trust a 6.0l ford to haul my family around so I bought the v10.
Caster and camber are adjustable on the front of these trucks. You just have to buy the plugs that the upper ball joint goes into. You can get them from the ford dealer. Although, all the ball joints I installed on super duty front ends. I have never seen one need to be adjusted but it can be done.

RE: Need to replace tires on my Chevy 2500HD

I just bough the LTX last week for my truck. I love them. The truck rides much better than it did with the goodyears. I just towed for the first time with them today and I could tell a big difference from the old tires.

RE: Ford Super Duty 6.2L

A 5% grade is practically flat.
“I’ve heard Fancy Gap is a good hill,” says Dubonnette, referring to a 7-mile, 7 percent grade on I-77 in Virginia just past the North Carolina state line. Uphill, Fancy Gap is a strain. Downhill it’s long, steep and curvy, and the North Carolina scales are at the bottom.
I have done this with my gasser no problem. With out an exhaust brake. Didn't have no problem up or down.

RE: Ford Super Duty 6.2L

A customer of mine traded in his 2005 f250 6.0l for a super crew 250 with the 6.2 and 373 gears. He pulled his race car trailer with the car in it down to Ohio and he said it pulled just as good as the diesle did. I think the six speed trans has a lot to do with it

RE: Ford Super Duty 6.2L

What ever, I was going down south on 77. What ever the grade it was big. By the way. The op did not ask if he should buy a diesle. He asked about the 6.2.

RE: Ford Super Duty 6.2L

The other advantage to the diesel is its exhaust brake. Make coming down those mountain passes much nicer as no gas rig can compare to its engine braking.
Yes it can. I pulled my trailer thru the mountains twice with my gas motor. I was going down 5% grades with my 8500 pound trailer. I would put it in second gear and it would hold my rig at 55 mph all the way. Last year I was coming back from Florida and coming down the hill in jelico I I had to stay in the gas to maintan 60 mph and that was in third. If I lifted off the throttle it it would slow down. Don't listen to the diesle guys. Gas motors don't need exhaust brakes slow down. I got some good advise on this form about going up and down hills with gas motors and it works great. They say to go down the hill in the same gear as you when up in. As for the rpm. The company I work for Shares a building with the company that makes the valve train components for the 6.2. They test all those parts on a dyno at Rpm's between 4500 to 5500 rpm for 1200 hours straight with oil temps at 260 deg. Your not going to hurt that motor pulling it up a hill at high rpms. That's what they are built for.

RE: Diesel vs. v-10 useage costs.

What is the cost of inadequate power?
I wouldn't know. My gasser has plenty of power. I've been down south with my trailer and both times I was passing semis on the top of the big hills. We all know they have diesle engines so they must have more than enough power.

RE: Diesel vs. v-10 useage costs.

You are correct. The new diesles are very quite. But so are the gas engine. I don't even care ether way. They both get the job done. And imop a diesle will get it done better but it also cost more. I'm just sick of the hole gas verse diesle arguing.
They both have their places. For me The cost of a diesel in the long run will pay off. I have been on the road with my 11 since Nov I have changed oil once and probably will again soon. With my load I have to have a diesel, I know I would destroy a gas engine.
Botom line for me is long term durability. I am averaging so far with 11K on the clock 9.5 mpg west coast towing. Gas engine would probably be about 5-6 mpg. That is a big difference for me.
That's all I'm trying to say. My trailer only ways 8500 loaded so the v10 works for me. That being said if I could have bought a excursion with a common rails cummins I would have done that. But the only options I had was a 2002 or older excursion with a100,000 grand plus for $25,000 or a low mileage 6.0l. When I was looking I started out looking at the dodge wih the cummins. But I desided the excursion would work of better of me and my family.

RE: Diesel vs. v-10 useage costs.

Who cares what's better. Why can't people buy what they want without every one else telling them they should have bought some thing else. I have a v-10 excursion because for the last three years most of my income was made from fixing the 6.0l ford motor. I'm not trying to trash that motor I just could not trust it to pull my trailer down south with my family. I like diesel motors and they make lots of powers but they are also more expensive to fix and maintain. Im not saying that as a bad thing just a fact. And to the person that said they would have to we're war plugs pulling there trailer up a hill with a gas motor. My v10 is quiter at 4500 rpm pulling my trailer up jelico then any diesel I have been in.

RE: First tow with new tires

I just put new tires on my truck and trailer this week. My wife said the same thing that the truck feels weird when driving it now. I drove it today and it is doing the same thing. It could be the highway though. New concrete with all the groves. I set the tire pressure to 65 psi and it still looks over inflated. Good idea about using chalk to check the contact patch on the ground. Plus my kids will have fun coloring the new tires on the truck. I will be pulling the trailer about 120 miles think weekend. I'll keep you posted on how it feels. I have noticed that those new concrete roads with all the groves will cause my little cobalt to move a little bit.
