RE: Navarro's Paint Shop Los Algodones, Mexico

The paint job I had done on my 89 Accord in Cuernavaca was done in a back yard with dogs, dust and kids running around. I thought it was 99.9% perfect and a friend of mine back here in Canada who has had many paint jobs on custom cars, agrees. 4,500 pesos including dent and rust repair.

RE: Telcel Internet

Wandering Mike has one of the more expensive Cradlepoints and he says it works with his Telcem stick. Problem is, you do not know for sure until you buy it and try it. You can buy a Telcel branded MIFI device here. Problem is it seems to be battery operated only. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Unlocked-Huawei-E5-E5836-GSM-3G-Wireless-Mobile-Broadband-Hotspot-Router-New-/110988376602?pt=US_Mobile_Broadband_Devices&hash=item19d76c3a1a "Box has Telcel logo on it but Hotspot is fully unlocked. Quick Start Guide is in Spanish and English"

RE: Telcel Internet

My only complaint is that their stick will not work with my Cradlepoint device. It is not supported. Why not just buy a router that does work with it? That is what I did. Because I just bought a Cradlepoint that works with my Canadian Virgin Broadband and my USA Virgin Broadband but not either Telcel sticks that I bought. I object to having to buying yet another router, but maybe I will have to next year. Maybe there is one on eBay.

RE: Telcel Internet

Yes, Banda Ancha and Telcel Internet are the same thing. Each computer you use it on has a small program that tracks usage for that computer. I am happy with the speed. It is good enough for Skype (audio, not video) most of the time. There has only been one location this year (Emerald Coast) where it did not work. Sometimes it slows down in the afternoons when kids are home from school, but you can still get on if you keep trying. Service will be good around PV. We have been at parks where someone has had the telephone company run a line into their spot for ADSL (or cable company). You would have to pay for this and have permission from the park. Prepaid (pay as you go) SIM's and reasonably priced phones are easily available from Telcel and other carriers. If you have your own unlocked phone you can just purchase the SIM.

RE: Telcel Internet

We have been very happy with the coverage from Telcel Banda Ancha. It costs 500 pesos for 3 GB and expires in 30 days. Ours has always lasted the full 30 days with blogging, emailing, web surfing and skype. You buy time at OXXO stores using the phone number assigned to the unit without telling them it is for Internet (they will tell you they do not sell Internet time, but they do). You then send a text message from your computer through their software (alto30 sent to 5050) and voila! You have service. My only complaint is that their stick will not work with my Cradlepoint device. It is not supported.

We remember fondly our visit on The Emerald Coast with you and Daniele. Norma and I are so sorry for your loss.

RE: Bridge 2 Into Laredo Information Needed

They do the same thing on the Florida toll roads, take a photo of your plate and send you a bill. We went through several un-staffed toll booths there in 2010 and never received a bill. You must have to accumulate over a certain amount of tolls before it is worth while for them to go through this process. I have nothing against paying tolls (I travel in Mexico) but I do want someone there to collect my money.

RE: Bridge 2 Into Laredo Information Needed

You can now buy the electronic pass for the toll road on the Mexican side of the border. I am not sure where but Chris knows. We always avoided that road by taking the road along the river to Laredo.

RE: Bridge 2 Into Laredo Information Needed

Thanks, it is nice to have some idea which way to go before we get there. Your instructions seem clear.

Bridge 2 Into Laredo Information Needed

We are giving up on Columbia Crossing as it appears that whatever lane we go into, it will be the "wrong" one and I have unhooked to turn around there too often. They appear to not want RV's there so, OK, they win. We will try Bridge 2 into Laredo but I need information on the process to turn in our FMM's and car permit. I understand the Aduana offices are under the bridge but how do we get off Blvd Luis Donaldo Colosio to get to Immigration and then back onto Blvd Luis Donaldo Colosio in order to cross. Also, which is the RV lane on the US side of bridge #2 Thanks!

RE: columbia crossing update

It was me who sent a complaint about the confusion caused by the ever-changing lanes. I got a nice reply thanking me for pointing out the problem and assured me they would send my concerns along to the head guy at the crossing. Fat lot of good it did. So, which lane do we go to as we come off the bridge, car lanes or truck area? I do realize they might (probably) tell me I am in the wrong area no matter which I choose, but to give me a better chance, where did you end up?

RE: columbia crossing update

So to be a little more specific, where do they want RV's to go? Do they want us in the leftmost lane of the car crossing or do we make the first right turn after the bridge and go to the commercial vehicle area where the X-Ray building is? Our problem is, we are towing the cat on a dolly and cannot back up. It was a huge commotion when they had to move barriers for us to make a u-turn a couple of years ago. That crossing seems to keep changing their mind where RV's should go.

RE: Class B and Topas

I think the OP's concern is "bottoming out" on a tope and possible damage to the undercarriage. I too have thought about this as some topes are much higher than others.

RE: It is all good fun, but some experiences are best not had

Tony, you will be able to find an English speaking cab driver. Have him phone them to get the correct address and hire him to take you to that address. Have him go in with you to talk to the service people. It will cost you little and you will have a translator. If they cannot help you, they can send you to someone who can. You are lucky it happened in a large city. Good luck and let us know what happens. Ask the cab driver in advance how much he will charge and if it seems reasonable, tell him he will be getting a very healthy tip ("propina"). From this moment on, he will be your best friend. We just had to deal with a problem with the Onan generator in a similar way except we found someone at the Puebla Cummins-Onan dealership who speaks perfect English. The problem is solved!

RE: Tolls!! Are we autobus or truck

"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, The courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference." Tolls are one of the things you cannot change. We are a Class C towing a Honda on a dolly. Usually we are charged for four axles. Once we were handed two receipts, one for the MH and the other for the car. Once they charged for five axles. I argued and got out so she could count out the four axles on the ground plus the one up on the dolly! If it was a truck full of tires, Carlos Slim (owner of the highway) could retire! I always announce "Cuatro" when we drive up and that usually encourages him to count in my favor.

RE: Where are all the RV'ers?

Yes, there is a Cummin-Onan dealer here in Puebla. We went there and ordered a new solenoid. When it comes in sometime this week they will send a service truck out to replace the part and test the system. 600 pesos for the part and 800 pesos for the service call. We had to pay everything in advance before they would order the part. Your method would work I am sure and that was our "Plan B". Plan A will cost more but we will end up with a factory repair. Thanks Moisheh.

RE: Repaint Class A Prices

I second the suggestion to take it to Mexico. We are there now and just had our '89 Honda toad completely painted for under $350 and that included some rust repairs. I saw a older Alegro Bus that had been painted in Mexico for $4500 US and that had included "a lot of body work". The painter photographed all sides of the bus before he started and after the basic paint he had an artist friend come and airbrush all the original designs and name back on.

RE: Where are all the RV'ers?

When we started we were constantly on the move, trying to see everything in a short period. Then we realized we were retired and could slow down. We then started spending three or four days in each location before moving on. Soon that three or four days turned into a week and now, after 13 years of winter traveling for me and 10 for my wife (who worked longer) we are spending two weeks and sometimes a month in each major stop. Our last stop was in Cuernavaca, Mexico where we stayed for five weeks, one week of which we rented an apartment in Oaxaca. Right now we are in Puebla, Mexico for two weeks to explore the area and replace the starter solenoid on the Onan (not a simple task in Mexico).

Check Rae's Blog, she was just there. If you email her, she has done a lot of research on dentists there. Rae's Blog

RE: Where are all the RV'ers?

Those photos were taken tonight Mosheh. The electric is bad, only three plugs on our row are grounded and we cannot run the A/C and microwave at the same time or the voltage drops to around 90 volts.
