RE: dingy towing 4 wheels on ground?

Wow. Hope you know how to count :). I also hope you checked with the Ford Owners' Manual in the truck before you bought it..... Good luck with the new truck! yep, owner's manual is the only "official" guide on this, if you want your vehicle to have the factory warranty. bumpy Yeah, I should have checked first and did spend the night worrying about it for sure. I picked up the truck on Tuesday and while driving home had the wife check the section on recreational towing. The 2013 Dinghy Guide was correct! No problems towing four down. The only thing now is it's so damn long compared to the CRV! Might be a year or two before I start towing it. Chris

RE: Driving the Trans Labrador Highway in a Class A

My son drives a tractor trailer for a moving company in Newfoundland/Labrador and has done this a few times. I remember him saying the road has greatly improved and a lot is paved compared to his first trip. I also know that now he normally takes a ferry over from the north of the island to Labrador. This is instead of a ferry to across the gulf, driving through 4 provinces and up through Quebec and then east to Goose. He's coming through town here on a run this weekend and I'll ask him what the roads are like now. If you're coming down through the island of Newfoundland you'll enjoy it as well. I spent several years off and on stationed in Gander (wife is from there) and really enjoyed the people and scenery. Wife and I are talking about going up this year (maybe next) but the cost of the ferry from Nova Scotia to Nfld is based on vehicle length and is not cheap. I've thought about going through Labrador as well. Chris

RE: dingy towing 4 wheels on ground?

Scott; Here's the quote from the 2013 Dinghy towing guide on towing four down for the F150. I hope its correct as I just purchased a 2013 F150 yesterday! The intent is to tow it when the 2001 CRV gets too old/worn. "F-150 4WD - Turn ignition to ON, press and hold brake pedal, move 4WD switch to 2H, shift transmission to NEUTRAL. Rotate 4WD switch from 2H to 4L and back five times. Turn ignition as far as it will go toward OFF. Leave key in ignition while towing." HTH Chris

RE: Removing old Diamond Shield??

I'm doing mine as we speak on my "new to me" 2003 DSDP. If it's clear it comes off "fairly" easily a couple of square inches at a time. If it's mildewed/rust coloured then it breaks in itty bitty little pieces! I've found using a Shark steamer on the vinyl for about 20-30 seconds on the brittle stuff seems to make it a bit more pliable for about three or four minutes. I also use a small plastic drywall mud knife and can get underneath and scrape an 1/2 inch or so. Most of the left over adhesive rubs off with a bit of pressure with your fingers. (Lots of sore fingers from picking it off and rubbing off the adhesive!):D I figure that by the end of the summer I might have it off! It could certainly be worth a few hundred to have someone else take it off! Chris

RE: Been working on a new camping spot

Now you've gone and done it! Everyone will expect a site like that at every campground now! NICE! Chris

RE: My wife can't decide, Please Help

Definitely table and chairs. We had the booth in our gasser and I hated the booth. If you sat on the edge of the booth most have a hard edge that quickly cuts circulation in your thighs! DW and I both agreed our next one had to have table and chairs, storage was not an issue as we have lots in our DP. The MH I just got doesn't have either. Based on the screw holes and impression in the carpet the PO seems to have had a custom desk/table that he removed before the bank took it back (the original build sheet showed a booth). Now just need to find a suitable table (keeping two chairs from my previous MH). Chris

RE: Removing Flexsteel seat

On my 99 DSDP 3865, the passenger seat was basically hard wired. However if you remove the seat from the base and lay it down carefully, you can access the panel where the wires connect and remove them from there. I ended up cutting the wires and splicing in an extension as I found the seat would not turn all the way due to the wires being too short anyhow. Cutting was easier (less wires) than removing them from the panel. If you do take them out of the panel, take pictures, there were a lot of wires for my six way power seats with lumbar support! Chris

RE: Newmar Dutch Star

If you have the VIN, email Newmar and they will send you the build sheet for the MH with the exact model number. I am just waiting for delivery of my 2003 my "3803" which is actually a 4005 according to Newmar. It only takes a day or so for them to send the details, great service. Chris

RE: Can not close and lock basement doors on a 2000 Bounder

I had a 2000 Bounder and had the same problem once in a while. I used a rubber mallet to gently tap the door (sideways) back in position. I did read an article a couple of years ago that stated that was how some doors were put on a MH, slid on the rail from one end, how they did the final one, I can't remember. Also check the lifters, they sometimes got twisted (loose screws) and would stop the door from closing as well. HTH Chris

RE: Allure Flooring

We have the adhesive in ours. With the large temperature swings here in WI we have some issues with it separating at the seams. If I were to do it again I would try the snap & lock. Good Luck! Actually I was going to recommend the opposite. I have snap and lock Allure vinyl plank floors and also have some issues with separating at the seams. I think there are two reasons - first temperature swings and second the slide rolls on it as well, slightly pulling it at times ( I think). In fact this weekend I am planning to redo a section and use some contact adhesive in spots to secure them to the sub floor. So it seems there is not a clear answer. Chris

RE: Went and bought another one!

I would look into towing the older RV - so you will always have a spare (and a large toad) with you !!! (jk) ;) Yep, thought of that, probably get good fuel mileage if you multiply by two. I believe there are a Canadian couple on the forum that have either a large class B or smaller class C as a toad so why not a class A:) Probably breaking half a dozen highway laws though (honest officer, it's only like towing a trailer?) RE: Side hall-enclosed bathroom vs. Center hall bath

Something for everyone, in our case a side hall all in one bath would have been a deal breaker. We both wanted the split bath with a separate enclosed toilet. That way one person doesn't tie up all functions of the bathroom when using it. Another "must" was hard sliding doors on both sides of the bath. At night when DW goes to be earlier than I do the bedroom is completely blocked off and I can use the bath without disturbing her, close both doors and it's as close to soundproofed as you can get in a coach. X2 - we looked at a 2006 Neptune last week and as soon as the DW saw the enclosed bathroom (toilet, sink and shower) it was no deal. She finds it too claustrophobic. Too bad as we both really liked everything else, but the floor plan has to be right. Chris

RE: Went and bought another one!

Damn!..it's almost APRIL..!!! What is that white stuff on the ground....:h:h It was 89 in Mesa today! Dennis Thanks, rub it in! You should see what we got on Tuesday, almost another six inches! Last year at this time the grass was green and the temp was around 75F. Monday morning when I called the dealer for the test drive it was -4 though it did "warm up" to around 25 for the test drive. Good thing he had it plugged in and turned on the block heater. I'm (not patiently) waiting until we can be south and warm for most of the winter. Maybe another 18 months. Chris

Went and bought another one!

First thanks for all the advice from forum members over the past several weeks on the different MHs I was looking at. After driving around 800 miles last weekend and looking at several MHs, nothing really jumped out. But then this weekend, a local dealer only an hour away where I bought my first MH, put a 2003 Dutch Star 8303 on the market, marked down significantly. Went and test drove it Monday night and signed the papers. It was clean, only 29400 miles and overall in real good shape. We wanted a table and chairs not a booth, but we got neither - PO removed the table and chairs so now we can put in what we want. DW thinks we are nuts, now have two MHs. Guess I need to sell the 99 DSDP (no sense of ha ha when I suggested we keep it as a spare):B. I've tried to post some pictures, not sure if they will work. Again thanks to all. RE: Opinions on various MHs please

Perhaps Newmar should be added to your list.. I have a Newmar now, but there are none available in my area (or budget) with any of the features I want. As it is, I have to travel for a day or more to view the ones above. Thanks Chris

Opinions on various MHs please

OK, I know I keep on asking the members of this forum for their opinions all the time (thanks for your patience), but you know what it’s like when you’re looking to trade/buy a new MH, there are several choices all with their pros and cons and the market changes just about every day. :? The search is part of the fun?:? I’m interested in forum members opinions both pro and con on the MHs listed below as we are all MH enthusiasts. I know to look out for tire age, de-lamination etc but am looking for known issues (e.g. Tiffins with floor issues, Travel Supreme with frame issues etc) I’m taking a couple of days this weekend to drive several hundred miles to see three or four MHs as listed below. (I know there are other suitable MHs, but the following are the ones that are available in my area and budget(and diesel), so please don’t suggest others that I can’t get here.). As in my previous postings, I’d prefer to trade vice sell on my own (just personal preference). 1. First on my list is a 2002 American Tradition 40W. It pretty well has all the options I want and seems to be a high end coach, although at the top of my budget. Unfortunately it is not available for viewing as the owner has stored it in NC until the snow goes here in Ontario around the end of this month. He said it has never been driven in the snow so I suppose that’s a good thing. Pros cons? Did I say I like this one?:B 2. Next on my list is a 2005 Fleetwood Discovery 39S, for about the same price at the Tradition, but with 3 slides. I can’t find out much so far about this one, but it does look good. 3. The next dealer has a 2006 Holiday Neptune 36SBT, still around the same price as the other two above. 4. Next is a 2001 Allegro Bus 40OP, about double the miles (164K KM or 102K miles) on for about 20K less than the ones above. I’m also going to see a dealer who does not list prices (don’t you hate the “please call”?) but has a large selection. My wish list includes (I know I can’t get it all) table/chairs, washer/dryer or plumbed for it, side radiator and towing capacity of 10,000 lbs. Just as a note, I am frustrated with the lack of diesel MHs available and am even starting to consider looking as some gassers as they are 2009/10 and still with most of the same features for the same price (but I do love my DP with air ride and hate doghouses!) Thanks for any feedback Chris

RE: 2002 American Tradition 40w?

Thanks for all the replies/info, I appreciate it. Just got an email from the seller and the MH won't be available until the end of the month, he left it in NC as he says its never been driven in snow (we're in Ontario and it only just starting to melt!). If he's that fussy, I'm assuming that the MH will be in great shape. If I haven't found anything by then, I'll probably follow-up with him. Again, thanks for the info. Chris

2002 American Tradition 40w?

Wondering if anyone can help me out, still looking at trading and I've come across a nice looking 2002 American Tradition. The model number wasn't listed and when I contacted the dealer he said it's a 40W. NADA lists a 2002 40w but when trying to find a brochure with the floor plans, I could only find a 40w listed for 2003, not 2002?? Does anyone know why? Also if anyone has an American Tradition of this era, would appreciate any feedback. They seem to have come pretty well with everything as standard, including washer and dryer. Thanks Chris

RE: Please Help - 1999 Tiffin - Asking for Advise ASAP

Late update on this coach, sorry for the delay but I ripped our kitchen out and have been working tons of hours at work as well. The rubber roof on the BUS has to be replaced so I let it sit since last November. Just contacted the dealer to see what kind of a deal we can work out if they replace the roof. I believe I can do it myself with the help of one or two of my boys, does not look that difficult on the videos I watched. I really like the layout of this one, if I can work a deal I believe I shall go for it. With regard to redoing the rubber roof, Google "Liquid Roof" and check their site and the u-tube video. Some people on this site have re-done their roofs with this as far as I recall. Chris

RE: Is it easy??

My RV tech said that my 2001 CRV was one of the hardest and estimated $500-800 for the install as it would pretty well take one day. I did it myself but took my time and about 2 1/2 days. There were a lot of parts to remove and items to cut or trim to fit, but it was all detailed in the instructions. Also as the instructions said, not all plates line up the same on each vehicle, I had to drill some extra holes through the frame and the plate. Putting some nuts on was difficult as I had to cut a hole in the frame to put the nut in place, at least Blue Ox had already welded wires to the nuts so you could hold on to them. Putting things back together again took some time. All in all not too bad, but if you don't have the tools or patience, better have a shop do it. Another brand of tow plate would only have involved installing four bolts along the bottom of the frame in pre-drilled holes, but I didn't like the finished look. The Blue Ox tow plate is not "visible" when not in use. Chris
