RE: After the Expo!!!

Man your truck is sweet DJ. Did you use your front locker or just the rear? Think you need to hit the trail a few more times if that's what it will take for you to get that new FWC.

RE: Trip report, part two: Overland Expo 2013

I really like the XP campers (except the price). Marc really thinks outside the box in camper design and they are high quality units. Hmmm, my kids have good jobs, they don't need an inheritance!

RE: quality control

I am not bashing Lance, but it seems like you have to spend BIG $ to get into serious quality. XP Camper is around $70k, Earthroamer & Global Expedition (not technically truck campers but close)are $200k and up.

RE: Stolen Camper

Glad to hear you got your camper & truck back. Wow, that video is an eye opener.

RE: Overland Expo 2013

Jefe, I thought that Cummins alarm clock sounded like sweet music. Helped us get an early start without setting our own alarm. We made the scenic drive over to Sedona, on to Jerome and then found some exciting remote forest service roads to explore. I think we camped in an "official" authorized dispersed camping spot. At least that's my story and I'm sticking to it! BKA0721, I like the sounds of next years Expo ideas. Keep on taking beautiful pictures. Aquawolfe, Hope to see you around again.

Overland Expo 2013

Like Jefe4x4 said, it was REALLY nice to see the people from the forum who attended. As interesting & fun as the Expo was, I think being part of our group was more fun. I would like to send a special thank you to Steve & Sally for coming up with this great idea and to Bryan Appleby for his hard work and organization of putting the parts together. I would also like to mention Truck Camper Magazine folks, Gordon & Angela who were camping with our group. On one side these people are just like you and me; these people are truck campers. They enjoy doing things and going places just like we do. We also got to see them at work and these folks work hard and our sincerely interested in helping their fellow truck campers and the industry make improvements. Already looking forward to Overland Expo 2014!!

RE: 1/2 ton towable 5th wheel

I don't know if they still make them but I know my father-n-law had a Tahoe Lite 24 footer that was easily towed with his 2001 Toyota Tundra. Believe it was under 4,000 lbs.

RE: 2012 Dodge Ram 3500 diesel & Eagle Cap 1160

I'd also consider a manual too, not a fa of Chrysler automatic tansmissions. My six speed manual w/ the Cummins 6.7 will haul aXX. The new Dodge automatics are good. They are WAY better than the 47E's you are probably thinking of.

RE: Truck camping on othe beach

I would recommend going straight to a 4wd 3500. The 2500 will work if you choose your campers weight wisely but my advice is to just go straight to the 1 ton. A truck camper is pure payload. It's not like pulling a trailer which a 1/2 ton could do just fine. YES, always air down before you get on the sand. Unless you are doing a lot of travel in the mountains, a gas engine will do a great job.

RE: Limits?

A 4wd Sportsmobile is very offroad capable but obviously we are biased toward the versatility of a 4wd truck & truck camper. Since you don't have a truck yet I would recommend going straight to a 3500. Even with a pop-up you won't have too much truck for the camper. "Where do you have to watch out?" Even in the Southwest, with a pop-up, I've had to watch out for low overhanging Juniper limbs. Mostly I've had to watch out for width as the Joshua trees and Cholla stretch out their fingernails along my truck & camper. I've had to watch out for granite as I went through the Needles tunnels (boy was that one tight). I've come within an inch of touching the rear overhang crossing a dry ditch. "Is it pretty easy to travel this way...how it affects truck handling" Yes, it is very easy to travel this way. Probably very similar to your Sportsmobile. You just drive it like you would a truck. If you watch the weight and don't overload your truck you won't experience white knuckle driving. My wife has no problems driving our truck camper. I look at Jefe 4x4's list and I see a seasoned camper who isn't afraid to use it. You pay to play rough!

RE: I built some stairs for my Bigfoot 10.4E

I do have a lot of tools, a consequence of an out-of-control toolaholic addiction :). My kind of addiction. My name is Mike and I like lots of tools too. : )

RE: a few roof repairs

I'll have to check my solar panels now before I scare a cow!! Or have one. I know what you mean about driving down rough roads which we do almost every trip. Last weekend I found our refrigerator was sliding out of it's space when we got to our destination. Just finished repairing/upgrading that moments ago.

RE: BaseBoard Heater Install completed

For those that camp with hookups it looks like a very nice addition. Very clean, compact and smooth lines.

RE: Door entry "wake up your jacks and pop outs" buton help

Hate to state a possible obvious...have you put fresh batteries in the remote? I know mine recently died, didn't have spare batteries with me and had to use the plug-in cord.
