RE: It's been fun, but going to the "dark side"

Best of luck Chuck! I too remember the time when my TC (and RV!) life came to a screeching halt due to taking care of my mom for a number of years. After she passed in 2011 I started back up again after a time, and I'm sure you will continue to also as your circumstances change. Whether or not you have a TC isn't the issue. It's that you enjoy your life and spend the time with those that you love as much as possible while they are still here. :) Dak

RE: My Anniversary

Rough Crowd!Yeah no kidding, bunch of grumps. To the OP, congrats. I can only dream of that right now. 14 yrs to go. I say congratulations also! I'm retiring next year AT 57 years old... Can't imagine already being retired for 20 years, but wow! Good for you! I always try to share in other folks happiness when they share it with me! :) Dak

RE: Unwanted guests, lets hear your story....

The only "unwanted guests" I've really encountered are mostly of the 4 legged kind, such as skunks and racoons. However I do recall one time I was in a regional park and there was a knock on the camper door. The lady and man who were camped a few spots down (with nobody in between us) had stopped by before to just say "hey" were now selling individual bags of chips, fritos, etc. They apparently lived in their trailer and he worked for a distributor of these products. These were "extra" bags they had for sale. Hmmmm.... I thanked them and politely declined. They fortunately didn't come back. Dak

RE: Unwanted guests, lets hear your story....

Kindness is the key word here... and diplomacy, and firmness in standing by your decision/request to have the young man leave. His motivation there is not to annoy you, it's because he is not able to recognize "normal" indications that he is overstepping. The advice about treating him like a 10 year old is good. As long as you are kind. :) Dak

RE: Grills that hang on the side wall of the trailer

For me the issue isn't so much that it's close to the camper, though that can present smoke issues inside as noted here. I do like the idea of a built in stand/bracket for the grill. However, more important for me is that each campsite is different and there are times there may not be room to cook at a permanent contact point on my rig. Too many factors like wind (ESPECIALLY wind,) picnic table location, Where everyone is congregating, etc., etc. can also determine it's a bad place to grill at that particular spot. I have a folding portable grill stand and much prefer that so I can grill wherever I want to and not be restricted to just the side of my rig. Of course whatever works for the individual is the best way! Dak

YAY!!! Congratulations on your new rig! VERY nice! Here's to many years of happy camping! :-) Dak P.S. I like the cordless drill in the back jack in the last photo... Many a camper has used this trick!

RE: What Are The Upsides & Downsides To Driving A DRW Truck?

Bingo! It is whatever works for you and what you want to do. It's an individual choice based on all the above. :) Dak

RE: What Would You Do?

Anyway, when do I cut and run? Now. I agree with this. I spent years and many thousands of dollars on my old 1977 F250 to upgrade, restore, refurbish, make pretty, haul, tow, etc. only to STILL have it not be reliable when I needed it most. I LOVED that truck, but I sold it when I finally gave up on trying to get confidence in it :( Best of luck in whatever you do purchase! Dak

RE: So what did you do to your Truck Camper today?

Transferred ownership of my TC to my daughter. Health issues have kept me from using it except for very short trips so now it is owned by a very high-energy,outdoors loving girl who will use it as it should be. Sad day but a good day. Sorry you are feeling the need to give up your camper, and I hope your health improves! It is good though that it will stay in the family and perhaps you can go with your daughter now and then.. Dak

RE: So what did you do to your Truck Camper today?

Well, not today, but last night. I removed all the garnish, screen, crank, etc. for my old roof vent over the dinette and drilled through the surrounding vent frame ceiling structure, tied into a ceiling light that uses led bulbs and pre-wired for my new Fantastic Vent fan that will be installed when the new roof goes on in a week! :) Dak

RE: So what did you do to your Truck Camper today?

Nice rear seat modification... I also take my two dogs with me and the entire back is foam with a comforter for them... the things we do for our furry kids! Today I replaced both the black and grey tank valves. No more drips from the grey valve or a cup of water when I take the cap off! Yay! Dak

RE: Our custom true flatbed truck camper build thread

I recently researched the Rhino Eco Coat roof. There are only a few "certified" installers in my area as they apparently need special equipment to spray it on. There is a YouTube video of the installation by an outfit in San Diego that Rhino Linings recommends down here and I spoke to him at length about it. It would be around $2,500 for my truck, providing no wood would have to be replaced and they actually go over the flanges, screws, etc. The only thing they remove is the AC and they replace the gasket for that afterwards. I asked about the replacement of vents, etc. in the future and he said they just use an Exact o knife to cut the Eco Coat around the item, then respray the spot afterwards. If I wasn't so cheap and putting a new metal roof on mine I would go with the Eco Coat. Good luck! Your project is looking good! Dak

RE: Our spring camping trip!

Holy Moly!!! Nope! Not gonna do it! That looks impossible! Did you use your rig as a sled coming down that slope?! You are a better man than I! I live where it snows, but nothing like that! Happy camping! :) Dak

RE: Finally a new truck.

sick rig! enjoy! You might want to check your spelling of "slick". LOL! Working at a University I actually hear the phrase "sick" all the time from younger people.... apparently it is synonymous with "cool", or "slick" or "beautiful", or any other host of adjectives referring to something good! :) Dak
