RE: Disgusted with KZ quality

Had a breaker blow in my Cameo. Found just the right one at my Local Home Depot for around $50+/-. Neighbor who is a certified Master RV Tech pointed me towards Home Depot. Said that is where he gets all his breakers and lots of other electrical supplies. That was after he told me I was too cheap to take it to the RV dealer where he works so he could make his $75 an hour pay. Said my problem was worth 3 coffee's and 2 hours of doing nothing after 3 minutes for replacing the breaker.

RE: Anyone have experience with an Awning Screen Room

MeandMyLabs, You wouldn't by chance have any pictures of your Vacation'r set up both inside and out would you? I have a 3 slide Cameo 5th wheel with the awning just on the edge of the door and close to the slide out, so I would have to get a 15 foot vacation'r which would extend over part of the nose and make a few adjustments. Trying to get ideas on what would be needed before I order it from Dyers. leonreisner@yahoo.com

RE: Add a Room - Pros / Cons

I don't see why one would have to remove the entire screen room just for some mild winds below 50 MPH. The only time I take up the awning is when they call for some heavy stuff of Hurricane strength. Have left my awning down during Hurricane Fay and Gustav with no problem while those with the pop up screen rooms had theirs blown away or ripped to shreds because the light aluminum frames snapped. If you leave the awning down but worry about the screen room, just partially roll up the walls on the screen room.

RE: Coach water pressure

If I run a straight 5/8 inch hose to my water inlet, I get good flow, even if run thru a softener first. But, as soon as I put a NEW Camco CRX90(?) filter in line, the flow drops fast. Any suggestions?

RE: Water Softener?

Have the On the Go water softener. Before getting it, I checked with a few places about which to use first, Softener or filter. All said to have the filter first to help keep sediment out of the softener. My main problem is finding a filter that does not drop the water pressure down to about 20-30 PSI.

RE: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info.

Professor, I think I will have to pass on reading all of that while in the library. I will pick out some of the more interesting articles though. I e-mailed Gen Tent this morning inquiring about air circulation around the generator and exhaust. Following is their reply. "The gen tent has been designed to serve up to 100 degrees outside tempratures. Over 100F, we recommend not using the tent. We have not had anyone with damage from our Gen Tent. The exhaust is relieved thru a rollup panel on the side for Lh or Rh exhaust muffler. Cooling is adequate with a 3in opening around the base." I guess I'll order one tomorrow since I don't want to spend the rest of my life sitting in the library reading. Will have to hook up a temp gauge on the top to get an idea of how good the cooling openings work. THANKS for all your help! Leon

RE: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info.

I prefer Hagen-Dazh(sp) Pineapple-Coconut or Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia. Now you will have to excuse me but I am only a HS Kickout so everything I wind up experimenting with is normally 5 times the work need. I plan to call SuperGen tomorrow. Tried yesterday but got their answering machine.

RE: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info.

Looks interesting but there are a few questions in my mind. Dual exhaust for the muffler and exhaust pipe?, but the inside heat would still be maintained as there is nothing to draw the heat out and no way for fresh air transfers over the AVR and starter. The open bottom would still redirect/bounce the sound waves down then out.:h I'm thinking(ouch another headache) that with the gas tank on top, there might not be a need for a top covering and just small openings around the corners of the tank to allow the sound waves to escape without causing a vibration of the tank and gas. Now I need some Ice Cream to take care of my headache.

RE: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info.

I've been having a headache weekend. Sound waves do not really bend around corners or curves, am I correct? Your Pink insulation sound shield in reality just bounces the sound waves back and forth since the surface is too smooth to distort the sound waves, possibly causing a vibration? Using an Acoustical panel with multiple holes, nocks and crannies absorbs more of the sound waves? How would the use of: 1---1/8" thick panelboard, the type with holes used for hanger hooks, painted with Boron for fire proofing on the engine side 2---1/2" to 1" acoustic foam board with a 1/8" to 1/4" thick or same as #1 with raised foam cut in different sizes and shapes to distort the sound waves, attached but with no holes lining up between # 1 & 2 3---1" thick outer panel. Total thickness about 2 1/2" on the sides and ends. The top should be the least worry. An opening for the installation of a heat exhaust fan and cooling fans would still be used. OR use of Silent Panel which is fire proof but possibly expensive.

RE: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info.

Professor, I hope you know that this thinking is giving me a headache by moving the cobwebs. Some time ago I remember a Liquid cooling system for computers and was "thinking"(there's that headache word again)if such a system could be applied to cooling an enclosed generator along with an exhaust fan to move the cooler air around or possible slots in the top of the enclosure for the heat to escape. I gotta take a headache break. You do know that this could be a good project for your students.

RE: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info.

Just a little something for your mind. How would a Hearth Rug be if cemented or attached to the inside walls of the Pink Fiberfoam generator box. They are fire resistent, light weight and fairly cheap, $35 and up.:@

RE: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info.

Professor, I think you better go back to teaching. Retirement is giving you too much free time to try new sound abatement projects and your possibly driving your wife crazy. What happened to your below $200 and the same weight as the original generator project which now is probably in excess of $300 and pounds?:h

RE: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info.

Professor, I'm lucky to live in an area with several PIY junk yards nearby with a few burned out RV's and to top it off, a few neighbors who are RV Master Tech's and one Industrial Electrician along with a former neighbor who works for his father's HVAC company. Between us, we might be able to bang heads hard enough to figure something out. Hardest part is findeing the Owens/Corning 2" Pink rigid insulation. Again, A Million Thanks!

Professor, Thanks for the pictures! Remember, a picture is worth a thousand words. In my case they are worth checking 975 postings to find what is needed. I'm very sure your latest posting will be very useful to other (lazy like myself) new commers.:o

RE: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info.

Professor. (hand waving) May I have another try? How would heating duct booster fans work bringing cooler outside air into the AVR and manual start with another drawing hot air out from the back?

RE: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info.

Actually, I was thinking of bending the fan blades so there was more pitch hopefully to generate more air then mounting the fan in a shroud to match up with the AVG cover and pull start. As far as the sound proof box. Instead of using Velcro which the hot Florida sun softens up the adhesive, I used Elemer's Wood Glue to mount 3/8" dia magnets into the Styrofoam Sheets. Finding the Owens/Corning Pink is like trying to find an honest and ethical politician. So far the glue holding the magnets has not loosened up. I'm just wondering how a sound box and generator would be during a possible Hurricane if I'm unable to move my RV in time. Then I would also have to worry about grounding of the genny. Now I'm starting to wonder if my reading your postings and the replies was such a bright idea.

RE: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info.

Looking at the pictures on the air cooling, what did you use for the fan shield on the manual start? Since my Champion is new and under warranty, rerouting the muffler and making a new box is out of the question. I'm thinking of using a few 8 inch desk fans for the cooling and attaching an extension for the spark arrester. Would the 8 inch desk fans be sufficient?

RE: 65dBa vs 55dBa Generators

Just got a Champion 3500/4000 generator last week. Let it run with no load and checked the noise level with my meter. Five foot or so, the meter was showing 70dB, same at about 30 foot. When I went inside my fiver, the AC gave less than a 50dB reading since it showed a LOW reading. When I turned off the AC, I just about heard the generator even though it was less than 10 foot from the closed door and with my meter set at 6o and like above, it showed LOW reading. Hopefully this weekend I will try to insulate the sound a little more by mounting the 2 inch thick Pink closed cell insulation front and rear of the generator as described in RV Tech. Since this is a new generator with warranty, I can not do too much to it.

RE: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info.

Just got my first generator two weeks ago, Champion 46515, for my 5th wheel after loosing electric last week when a tree fell over the power lines. This subject and professor95's replies are a God send to me. Not that I'm slighting everyone else who have posted here but the professor gives a lot more info that even I can understand, well, most of the time anyway. Shame that the professor can not produce a DVD on this subject along with pictures for people like me who are slowing down due age or are just thick headed. I'd be the first to order a few. I have to figure how to save all of his information on a CD for future reference. THANKS a million professor95 and everyone else!

RE: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info.

Just purchased my first Champion 46515 $279 from CW Tampa. Have a 35 ft Cameo that is pre-wired for an Onan genny in the front basement. Am thinking(smell of burning rubber) of installing the genny there and would accept any and all info on converting to electric start using pre-wired start, exhaust rerouting for and placing in basement. Have saved the info on softening the sound. Get 70 db with genny running no load 5 to 15 foot away but just barely hear it while inside. Main use would be for power outages and possibly overnight Wallymart or truck stop camping.
