RE: Canadian Maritime Provences

Splinter...do you have a contract package on your verizon cell? We have a pay per month thing. Ended up spending $111 for a canadian bell cell phone...couldn't make ours work...no sim card in hubbies contract phone and my tracphone wouldn't work (confirmed that with a phone call). Canada is not kind to its cell phone users...pretty pricey to use it...so ours is for emergency only or use within canada.

RE: Mississippi to Maritimes--best route to bypass NYC

we just arrived in Nova Scotia from NY. We left kingston NY area on a monday morning at 7:30 am....thruway to mass pike to 290 to 495 to 95 and it was a breeze no traffic, no congestion...overnighted in Beddington, ME but I think I would recommend the Walmart in Brewer, Maine. Posting our blog soon... Oh, and if you are going to Nova scotia go see Hopewell Rocks and plan for a full day...

RE: Sweet potatoes...am I late to the game?

I tried Devon Alexander's recipe from The Biggest Loser but it included ground turkey which doesn't do it for me at all. My adaption is colorful and flavorful. There are actually three recipes here that make up the sweet potato recipe...all useful on their own. Southwest Loaded Vegetarian Sweet Potato Makes Two Servings Ingredients: Two sweet potatoes 4 oz. can of chopped green chilies Salsa – can be jarred or fresh your choice and quantity as well. 2 T. Fatfree greek yogurt See my recipe for Mexican Corn Salad See my recipe for guacamole’ or just buy some Nuke the sweet potato until done: individually about 5 – 6 minutes Cut sweet potato in half and place in a bowl or plate. Open to prepare for stuffing it/topping it Top each sweet spud with the following: 1/3 cup (more or less to your liking) with Mexican corn salad 2 oz. Chopped Green chilies Guacamole’ – amount is up to you Green yogurt Salsa Mexican Corn Salad recipe: 1 can of black beans, 15 oz (or kidney beans) 1 can of corn, 15 oz? 1 can of diced tomatoes with green chilies 1 small onion chopped up finely (red looks better but often I use plain old yellow onions) One bunch of cilantro, chopped finely (I really like cilantro so I use it all!) Juice of one lime First, in a colander, drain the black beans. then add the canned corn and diced tomatoes….let drain. Meanwhile, chop up the onion. In a medium sized bowl add all ingredients and stir well. Notes: I sometimes serve loaded sweet potatoes with a salad; sometimes I don't. Mexican corn salad becomes a burrito with the addition of a wrap, cheese, maybe some leftover chicken...nuke and add guacamole. Donna's Guacamole' recipe: One ripe avocado (I use the small Haas ones for more flavor. I find the bigger ones less flavorful) Juice of one lime 1 T. chili powder Dash of garlic powder to your liking Dash of onion powder to your liking Jarred Salsa…maybe ¼ cup max? (to your liking) Wash avocado and slice in half. Pop out the pit and scoop the avocado into a bowl. With a potato Masher, smash the avocado. I leave it somewhat chunky. Squeeze Lime to extract all juice; after struggling by hand squeeze juice, I bought a Lemon Squeezer which does a very good job (better than husband). Stir in lime juice, chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, and salsa. Serve immediately. The lime juice somewhat retards it from turning brown but you really cannot keep this long…or try covering it in plastic wrap.

RE: Anastasia State Park, FL - first time visit

If you hit the tide right you can bike out to the point...not for kiddies but perhaps one adult alone? Sand must be hard enough...if not it is a workout! Kiddies at that age...sand and lots of it...all thing beach! Donna

RE: First extended trip help

Food costs will pretty much be what you spend at home plus maybe some more dinners out? Gas: make a general itinerary and double it. Entrance fees: a few hundred dollars at least Some more research as to gas prices www.gasbuddy.com to get an idea of pricing throughout the USA. RE: Awning question what is too much wind

Rule of thumb: If wind is flapping it more than a little bit or there is any danger you MIGHT have to replace it OR you might have to get up in middle of night - roll it up. Simple::)

RE: DW won't drive

I am the wife who won't drive. Why? well it is a pretty wide unit (van and travel trailer)and I only drive the van minimally. Hubby likes to drive. I totally agree that I should be capable of driving it in an emergency! I have talked to many wives who also do not drive for whatever reason. We also have a class C which I will give a go at driving (on the widest road we can find...lol!)...24 feet long. My car is an elantra so size is the issue here and dealing with tractor trailers on highways is not something I want to experience. I navigate (to the point that he doesn't always know where he is) and I dump (hey I deserve big points for this!) and help set up the jacks etc. http://roadsidechronicles.blogspot.com/

RE: First Time Snowbirding Experiences

My favorite are the state parks; I get tired of being in one place for more than two weeks. More space between sites, trails to walk without driving somewere, not like a parking lot (that is a big one for me). Generally speaking you would have to prebook these OR just go online a week before to reserveamerica and see what you can get. If you are north of Tampa, not so much of a problem finding state park spots. South of Tampa area or on any coast...they are booked pretty solid. However, there is a lot to be said for winging it; if I could, I would far rather do it that way. We work in florida for winter so that is not possible. Explore and have a great time...do state parks, private parks, dry camp where you can, etc. Donna our blog: http://roadsidechronicles.blogspot.com/

RE: What do you do in a tornado warning when in the RV?

As a northerner, those warnings and watches even freak me out. I have spent hours in a few bathhouses in Florida...hubby was going down with the ship! Donna

RE: Spanikopita Recipe?

I too love spanikopita. For the record you don't have to put all that butter and oil in recipe. You can use a light olive oil spray or nothing between layers... Donna...always trying to lighten the fat load

RE: Help I am gagging

This is an indication of just HOW much sugar the average person eats. Yes, it is tart:) I like to save my sugar usage for something good (basically only the occastional brownie, ice cream, homemade cookies, fudge)so when I eat yogurt which is often, I do add a little vanilla yogurt to the plain and add a bunch of fruit and almonds. I have had it plain with fruit but it is not for the average person. Yeah, dump in honey, maple syrup, or SUGAR because there is a LOT of it in it. Plain yogurt makes a healthy substitue for sour cream. http://roadsidechronicles.blogspot.com/

RE: Toilet paper pyramid...what are your thoughts!

Okay, thank youuuuuuuuu for the many ideas. Water...we will use more for flushing and always add after we dump so there is nice bed of water to slosh while we travel (however short or far). We have toilet wand it is just not with us...so will bring that next time. Ice cubes...a friend had recommended that to us a long ago and we did it today. Yes, it needs a good cleaning...something we are going to do over the next few days...while we are doing one night her and a few there. I still like the idea of a stick...and we joked about a BIG immersion blender to stir it... Thanks again. Donna Oh, here is our blog: roadsidechronicles.blogspot.com/

RE: Toilet paper pyramid...what are your thoughts!

Bahhahaa. How did hubby convince me to empty tanks???? A curious question. The first time it was because I accidentally bought gloves that were too small for him. It was a LARGE box of one size fits most (and he has big hands so no way). I just continued after that...not too far from doing many diapers when I was a young mom! He drives....I will NEVER, EVER drive this one. Our black sensor died. We could see paper/water in the pipe when we looked down...closer to top than we wanted! Closer than we have ever seen it. We solely use our toilet unless we are out and about somewhere. WHATTTTTtttttt...us girls don't need to use 1/4 roll of TP? That is news to me! Okay, I could cut down on that a bit...save money! Thanks for your insights!

Toilet paper pyramid...what are your thoughts!

Okay, so we are travelling currently in a 20 foot travel trailer with van. It is dear hubby's thing that he does NOT want to have to go and empty tanks during our two week stays in state parks. So I let him have his way on that one...we usually make it. There are usually two of us. However, the last campground we were at dear daughter was with us for one week. We had an issue with the black tank which is very unusual. We have had three persons before with no issues. The black tank appeared to be full. Hubby thinks it was just the toilet paper pyramid build up below the tube. I think it was full but don't know how it could be. The stick he found to try and poke at it (ew) was not long enough so we had to go empty it. Actually he drives and I do the tank emptying (which I don't mind really...until I have issue that is). So here is a thought...you are in a campground for two weeks. The toilet paper is building up and with no trailer movement, I doubt it is going anywhere...just growing. Anybody have a problem with the pyramid like we did? Solutions...shake the trailer alot? Make sure there is "enough" water added before you start you two weeks (but not too much)? Incidentally, we use scott and I have tested it for breakdown (a piece or two in jar of water). Donna

RE: Maryland coast to up to Mystic?

Want a relaxing drive? Leave at 11 pm and drive through the night. Want hell...do it in daylight. I won't be pleasant...grew up in NJ and live near New Paltz, ny. I won't go through nj...sooner go around and through pa. Sheer numbers/cars and people.
