RE: Holiday Candy

SWEET AND SPICY PECANS
2 tbsp. butter
1/4 c. (firmly packed) brown sugar
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
2 c. pecan halves
Place butter in 1-quart glass bowl. Microwave on high for 30 seconds or until melted. Add remaining ingredients and 1 tablespoon water; stir until pecans are well coated. Microwave, uncovered, on HIGH for 4 to 5 minutes or until pecans are toasted and glazed, stirring 2 or 3 times. Spoon pecans in single layer onto waxed paper. Cool.
Tried this just last night, and it gets 5 stars! Tasty, not too sweet, and incredibly easy. It takes 10 minutes - tops. This one is a keeper!

RE: verizon provides free wifi network access to evdo customers

Could be useful. Thanks!
According to the press release VZ Access Mgr 7.2 is required. I'm running version 6.7.1 and when I clicked on 'Check for Updates" it said I'm running the most recent version. No update available.

RE: Slow page loading

This problem shows up every now and then, including to me. If you're using Vista make sure you've installed all available updates. That may be all that's required to speed up page loading. No idea why it affects only this site.

$12.99 DeLorme GPS with Software

For those of you looking to add a GPS receiver to your laptop Buy.com is offering the Delorme Earthmate GPS Receiver with Street Atlas USA 2008 Software for only $12.99 with free shipping.
At that price it becomes a stocking stuffer. You could buy it just to get the software to play with. I'm still using the SA 2007 for trip planning so the 2008 would be an upgrade for me. I have the GPS receiver but rarely use it since I got a Magellan.

RE: Digital version of a VCR?

I've got a Philips 160GB Hard Drive DVD Recorder Clicky that works just like a VCR. You can record shows on the HD then delete them, or if you want to save them the unit also records and plays DVD's.

RE: Galveston to Hot Springs via Texas Rt 59?

There is still about 10 miles of construction with narrow lanes just north of Houston (New Caney to Splendora) but otherwise, US 59 is a good route to take. Much of it is multi-lane divided highway with controlled access. Between Nacogdoches and Texarkana, you will pass through some small towns with one or two lights, but overall it is still a very good way to go.
Ditto what he said.

RE: Sirius Radio

Once you try Ipod you won't go back
I have one. Rarely use it. As noted above, "Regular radio or Ipod just can't compare for variety of programming." I like the variety.

Save electricity.....get a dog!
I have a wife. She's warmer than your dog. No fleas. And she'll occasionally fix a meal. Can your dog do that? :B

RE: suggestions on electric blanket

Another vote for the electric mattress pad. IIRC they're lower wattage than blankets because they don't lose heat to the open air.

RE: Pecan pie recipe

I also use the Karo syrup recipe posted above by Cruzette. I pre-bake and seal the pie shell since the filling tends to soak the crust. To those using margerine or oleo (haven't heard that word in a while), pecan pie is much better with real butter.
To those chocolate lovers out there, try adding 1/4 or 1/3 cup chocolate chips. (Don't add too much or the chocolate will overwhelm the pie.)

RE: Sirius Radio

I've had Sirius for several years and love it. I can listen to what I want anywhere I go. It's installed in my Tahoe with the direct connect feature. I can take it out and play it in my boombox anywhere I want the entertainment.
I bought the lifetime subscription.

RE: StormDamage

I work storms as an insurance adjuster. If a neighbor's tree lands in my insured's yard and damages their property I pay to clean up the tree from the yard and repair the property, and I don't go after the neighbor's insurance.
If my insured's tree falls into a neighbor's yard I don't pay for damage or tree removal on their property. That's the responsibility of their insurance.
If the tree is dead and rotten and everybody know's it's going to fall in the next big windstorm it's still hard to prove negligence (which is needed to generate a liability claim). At the least you need an expert to certify that the tree is a hazard and a legal demand that the tree be removed.
So, in the OP's case, where is the neighbor's negligence? There isn't any. Nobody expects their roof to blow off.

RE: Technical question for Dr Doug...

This is a question I've wondered about. Why is it seemingly so difficult for humans? I had major surgery a couple years ago. They stopped my breathing and paralysed me, and could easily have gone a little farther with no discomfort at all.
I googled pet euthanasia and found "the most common way to humanely put a dog down is by using sodium pentobarbital. This substance is administered intravenously and results in rapid loss of consciousness followed by either cardiac or respiratory arrest. The animal will feel absolutely no pain as it drifts into unconsciousness."
The fact that sodium pentobarbital isn't used for humans makes me wonder if it truly is painless, as it must be for human executions. I haven't answered the question but hopefully have added some interesting information.

RE: StormDamage

His insurance covers damage to his property. Your insurance covers damage to your property. If he's a really great guy he'll pay your deductible. But it was an act of nature and he didn't do anything to cause the damage to your property. Therefore, you're on your own.

RE: Pressure Cooker necessary?

I've used a pressure cooker for many, many years. They're a real time and energy saver, and they'll make the best pot roast you've ever had in less than an hour.
At 7,000 feet they'll cook dried beans in 35 minutes instead of five hours. At sea level mine cooks (boils water) at 248º instead of 212º. At 7,000 feet water boils at 199º in an open pot and 235º in a pressure cooker. Big difference!
Less time in the kitchen, less propane used and less heat in the trailer.
