RE: Lexan or plexiglass on my screen door

I covered my screen door with two pieces of plexiglass. The bottom one is a rectangle coming up to the slide opening. The top piece comes down to the bottom piece, with a notch cut out for the slider. I cut the plexiglass with a Roto-Zip and hold it on the outside of the door with Velcro. I love being able to open the outer door while using the A/C or heat. Sometimes I'll remove just the top panel for fresh air in cool weather. BTW, plexiglass is harder and more scratch resistant than polycarbonate, even though it's not as 'tough'. Something to keep in mind if you have pets and you're putting it on the inside of the door. Also, I replaced the frosted, tempered glass in the door with 3/16" smoked Lexan.

RE: Bug Repellent

The following is from HowStuffWorks.com "The most popular reasoning that pops up among entomologists and patent-filing entrepreneurs is simple light refraction. Refraction takes place when a clear or opaque object, such as a piece of glass or a bag of water, alters the course and velocity of light. The rays of light, which normally travel in a straight line, bend. This effect is responsible for a number of optical illusions, such as mirages, that occasionally baffle humans as well." "A housefly bases its sense of direction on the direction sunlight comes from. Some entomologists believe that when these complex, sensitive eyes experience refracted light, the insect becomes confused and flies away." "While some supporters claim water bags keep all kinds of flying insects away, most report success with complex-eyed insects, like houseflies."

RE: Texas/Oklahoma Tornado Alley.

I've been watching 'Tornado Road' on the Weather Channel, where storm chasers drive hundreds of miles using online doppler radar and the latest forecasts to try and find one and photograph it. Most days they're unsuccessful. If they have trouble finding them then you'll never see one.

RE: Coffe Filters

Great list! Thanks! I've used them for window cleanng and popcorn bowls for a long time. Oh yeah... making coffee. :B

RE: Safe places to stop on the way to Texas

There's a nice park (Vinton RV) at Exit 8 in LA near the TX border. For one night I've stayed in MS & LA rest areas several times. There are parks all along I-10.

RE: Inverter generators, Kipor vs. Honda, 2x2kw vs. 1x3kw

I have a Kipor KGE3000Ti (2,300w / 2,600w max) that I bought in 2006. It starts and runs my 13,500 BTU A/C, using about a quart of gas per hour in 95º weather. I have to leave the fan running, as it won't start the fan and compressor together. I like the compact size and 60lb weight. Noise level is rated at 58 to 63 dBA.

RE: Driveway Specs for Backing Fifth Wheel

I've done warehouse design work and laid out the drives and parking areas for semis. Don't know how to translate that for a 5th wheel. If I were you I'd find a sand or dirt lot and lay out the street and a driveway cut. Then back the 5th wheel through the cut and use the wheel tracks to see what kind of radius and width you need. Might have to do it several times.

RE: #1076 12v bulb too bright - alternatives

Most RV light fixtures use single contact 12v bayonette base bulbs, and the following all fit the normal sockets: 1156 27w 1073 23w 1141 18w 1093 15w 1003 12w 93 13w The #1076 is a double contact bulb that has a 23w rating. That seems unusual. It's not on this list for some reason. Try a #1004. It's a 12w double-contact bulb.

RE: DVR Recorder - TIVO?

I have a Phillips DVR with a 160GB hard drive that works just like a VCR. You can record shows on the HD then delete them or if you want to save them the unit also plays and records DVD's. They used to sell them at WM, but WM now sells a similar Magnavox unit.

RE: bugs in toilet???

Do a Google search on "sewer flies" and you will find out all about them. Also known as "drain flies".

RE: Swivel Wheel towing

That brings back memories! In 1957 my mother drove from Michigan to California with 3 kids while towing a small single-wheel covered trailer. She didn't think she could handle a regular trailer on a ball. No problems that I recall except the sharp jerk as the wheel spun around when backing.

RE: Making Fish Eye Pictures.

Here's a stitched photo that shows the bedroom in my Prowler. It wasn't possible to get all this in one shot on my camera. I used the Canon Photostitch that came with my printer. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2725/4032674866_d39a39fc0a.jpg

RE: Solved! Clothes stay put.

I have the rear closet and this has been a major annoyance for me. However, I don't have a closet rod. I have a long perforated bar attached to the closet ceiling. Hangers go thru the holes in the bar. The only thing I've found that works is to put 3 or 4 hangers in each hole. That jams the clothes together and keeps the hangers from jumping out of the holes. Any easier ideas?

RE: My Tahoe and a Passport 290bh

I also have a 2006 Tahoe with the 5.3L engine and tow pkg, but have the 3.23 rear end. I tow a Prowler 24J that weighs 4,400 dry and 5,500 wet. I have a WD hitch without sway control. The trailer tows beautifully with no sway. I hardly know it's there. That's my rig as a point of reference for you. You're looking at a TT that's both heavier and longer. In theory, a longer TT is more likely to sway.

RE: Freeze Warning-In House

They're in common use on farms and ranches to turn on heat to pump houses, cattle troughs, etc. I found this one at Tractor Supply for only $12.98

RE: A Cell Phone Revolution has begun

Any concerns about coverage area / signal availability? What about roaming charges, or are those a thing of the past?

RE: Elect. Heater

Do it all the time. Just make sure it's clear of anything flammable. What is her concern?

RE: Eye Glasses in Mexico?

Rather than Mexico you may want to consider buying glasses online. A good place to start is GlassyEyes.com where you can learn about the process and the retailers. I buy no-line progressive bifocals that usually cost $250-$300 at a buy one get one sale at Eyemasters. I bought a very nice pair from 39DollarGlasses.com for $85. They were made in Melville, NY and took about two weeks.

RE: Good First TT for me? (Updated w/ pics 10/18)

So ok -- slides issue aside (we can have a friendly debate all day!) - is the unit good and the price I mentioned right? Check on NADA to see what they say about pricing.
