RE: Driving miles or time in a day?

bruceteri, If I were driving this route I would leave at 6am. Drive 3-4 hrs stop for 1/2 hr then drive somemore. Just stop when you feel tired. Plan on getting to Hagerstown, MD. 735km and 7hr driving time. Have a good meal and relax for the night. Stop some where in NC 2nd night. 3-400 miles. You should be out of any bad weather then. From there take your time and enjoy the trip. Good luck Ron

RE: Electric Step Problems

The steps are pressure sensitive. I would clean all the moving points then lube them. I use a lube for steps from CW. Three times a year this is done. Then if you have trouble start with grounds, battery then motor. If you can get the pin out of the drive link then the steps will move freely. You will then know that they are not binding. They are easy to fix and you can do it yourself. Unplug the wires at motor and check for 12.5 volts. Have someone work the switch. If you have less than 11 volts they may not work. Good luck Ron

RE: SNOW TRAVEL ADVISE NEEDED DESPERATELY ASAP!!

I just checked and we are to have some rain but tonight some snow as temp get to 29*. Tomorrow some snow but only 1" or less and 30-34*. I-80 will be fine. You will have toll roads from east of Cleveland to Gary IN. Roads are good and Chicago will not be a problem. I would use the route BarbaraOK gave you. I don't think you will have any problems but be careful. Sorry about your emergency. Welcome aboard and hope you have a Merry Christmas. Ron

RE: SNOW TRAVEL ADVISE NEEDED DESPERATELY ASAP!!

I think you should stay on I-80. You will see lake effect snow from Buffalo to Chicago but should not be a problem. Just go slow. The big storm is in KY and WV now and heading northeast so get out early. After IL. you should be fine but you may have to buy chains somewhere for the western states. All you can do is start then go with the weather. Make sure you have propane full and keep fuel up. Electric heaters will help if you have a genny. Put in some extra blankets you may need them. Also food and water if you have to stop and wait. Good luck Ron

RE: installing a wood floor ???

We installed the laminate in 2006. Took everything off the floor before we started. It still looks great. Mine came with the padding glued on each board. It snaped together. You have to leave 1/4" clearance on all the walls and drill all holes for chairs 3/16" bigger. It has to float. I made 1/2 x 1/2" trim for the walls. You need to start under the slid if it is over the floor. If we were do it again would look at Allure. We put that in bathroom at home and it is great. Was not around in 2006 that I know of. Good luck Ron

RE: The generator has 2,500 hours

I have the 5500. If the batteries are up it starts in about 5-10 sec. If it don't start right away then I start the engine and start the genny. This only happens if it sets for a long while. Mine has a toggle switch on dash. It lights up when it is running. Hold it down till it starts but not more than 10 sec. If it is very cold out it may take two or three tries. Make sure you have gas in tank above 1/4 full. Good luck Ron

I just used the RV sales at top of page and found three under $140,000. So you need to check around. Start low. Good luck Ron

RE: Question on Country Coach

Hi, Didn't want to start a firestorm on CC but I did learn some things about them. We will be in TX for the winter so maybe the RV industry will shake out by early summer. Still does not look good. We would sell next year anyway so can look around a while longer. Thanks for all the replys and everyone have a Merry Christmas and a better New Year. Ron

RE: eletric heater for motorhome

We use a Pelonis HC-461 5 disc ceramic. Got it on e-bay $99+shipping. It works very good and is small. We also have an old tower which works well but not as the Pelonis. Both have fans and a thermastat but the Pelonis is much quieter. Good luck Ron

RE: Cooper or Dynatrac Tires?

I have been running Coopers on the front for 4 years. Have not had any problems. When I get new tires I am going to get all Coopers. Had problems with Goodyear tires on rear. Good luck Ron

RE: Avoid units with Kwikee electric steps

I wasn't going to weight in on this but I would like to know what was wrong that cost $500. Kwikee steps are pressure senitive . If they are not cleaned and lubed once in a while they will stick. I know because this happened to mine. I think someone saw you coming and made some easy money. I don't think you would need to rebuild everything so parts would not cost more than $200. Maybe less. They are very easy to fix. Sorry for your problems and sorry for the high cost of a fix. Ron

RE: viair air compressor

Viair compressors are very good and are costly. I saw one mounted under the front of a gas MoHo. He had the 450C onboard system. 2.5 gal tank. He told me that it needs to be 100% duty cycle and 150psi max. He said that it would do his 22.5 tires and anything else he wanted to do. I was going to get one but could not justify $400. It is small and light and mounted out of the way. He run the air to his curb side compartment with his propane tank. Ron

Question on Country Coach

Hi, We are thinking of selling out and going full time. (maybe) My question is about a 2006 or 2007 Allure not over 40'. I see a few out there for sale. Any problems that are known about this coach? The Allure would be in the very top of my price range. I have found some Monaco Dynasty's and an Executive 40' which I did not know was made in 40'. Should I look at these orphans? Also Monaco may be in a better price range. I know very little about these higher priced MoHo's. Thanks for any advice. Ron

RE: Overnight rest stop Jackson, MS

Hi, I was checking this area also as we will be on I-20 west after first of year. There are 4 Walmarts that allow parking but 2 are not in good areas. There is 2 Cracker Barrels a Bass Pro Shop and a Flying J that allow over night parking. You can check these out online and get location and phone #'s. We will most likly use Cracker Barrel. That way we can get breakfast and be on our way. Good luck Ron

Golden Age Pass changes (long)

Hi, Came across this today and thought you might be intrested. It is long. Here's a little something all you Seasoned Citizens with a Golden Age passport might want to read and ACT ON to preserve your entitlement. Forest Service To Eliminate Senior and Disabled Camping Discounts DURANGO, CO - The U.S. Forest Service has announced it plans to eliminate the 50% discount at National Forest campgrounds that has traditionally been available to holders of lifetime Senior and Access (permanent disability) passes. The change will apply at campgrounds operated by private concessionaires, which represent 50% of National Forest camping capacity and 82% of reservable campsites. In a notice in the December 1st Federal Register, the agency outlined a new policy that would replace the half-price rule that has been in place since the mid-'60s with a 10% discount. The policy would also require Senior and Access passholders to pay a fee at National Forest day-use sites that are currently covered in full by their passes. Seniors 62 and older pay a one-time $10 fee for their lifetime pass. Lifetime passes for the permanently disabled are free. Together, Senior and Access passes represent more than 78% of all pass sales. Under current policy, concessionaires are required to honor Senior and Access passes for campground fees under the same terms as if the Forest Service operated the facility directly, meaning that a 50% discount must be offered. Most highly-developed campgrounds are now concessioner- run. As the concessioner program has expanded over the past thirty years, it has moved away from a small mom-and-pop business model to one dominated by a few large corporations. According to the published notice, those firms brought five specific complaints to the Forest Service: 1) the REA does not require the 50% discount, only Forest Service policy does; 2) the discount is too steep; 3) the 50% discount is non-negotiable and can't be used as a "marketing tool to encourage off-peak use"; 4) as the baby-boomer generation ages, too many people are becoming eligible for the discount; and 5) prices to other campers must be increased to cover the discounts given to lifetime pass holders. The bottom line is, it's hurting their bottom lines. The move is possible only because of changes in the laws that authorize recreation fees on public lands. Until 2005 such fees were governed by the Land and Water Conservation Fund Act of 1965. That law established the Golden Age and Golden Access passes, entitling the holder to lifetime free entry to National Parks and giving a 50% discount on federal camping fees. In 2005 a new law called the Recreation Enhancement Act (REA) took effect, replacing the previous authority. Under REA, lifetime passes are still offered but the 50% camping discount is no longer required. The Forest Service had, until now, continued the discount as a matter of policy and had required concessionaires to do so as a condition of their operating permits. The REA specifies that pre-existing holders of Golden Age and Golden Access passes can continue to use them in accordance with the terms they were issued under "to the extent practicable. " That means they should be grandfathered- in for the 50% discount as long as the pass is not lost or stolen. But when the new REA-authorized Senior and Access passes became available in 2007, Golden passholders were encouraged to exchange their old paper pass for one of the new plastic ones, and according to the Forest Service many did. Now the Forest Service is claiming that keeping track of different discounts for Golden passholders than REA passholders is "not practicable. " "The Forest Service is not showing good faith by changing the terms of the passes after the fact," said Western Slope No-Fee Coalition President Kitty Benzar. "They encouraged people to turn in their Golden passes, which guaranteed a 50% camping discount, in exchange for an REA pass which does not, without telling them that they were giving up an important benefit. If they can't find a practical way to distinguish between the two types of passes, the only fair thing to do is to continue to offer the 50% discount to both groups." Day-use sites managed by concessioners will also be affected. Under the new policy, holders of the annual America the Beautiful Pass would be entitled to free entry, but Senior and Access lifetime passholders would get only a 10% discount. This changes current policy which calls for all three passes to be honored equally at day-use fee sites. The change is the latest in a long series of policy decisions that have transformed recreation on public lands from a public benefit into a market commodity. "Until 1997, when the Recreation Fee Demonstration Program was implemented, it was government policy that public lands were to be available equally to all Americans, with modest fees only for a few highly developed sites and for entrance to National Parks," said Benzar. "They were one of the benefits we enjoyed as citizens and all supported with our tax dollars. Since then there has been a systematic policy shift. Public lands are now expected to pay their own way in access fees." She pointed out that under previous policy, offering lifetime passes and substantial discounts to seniors and the disabled was a way of honoring their contributions to our nation and ensuring them access to the benefits of outdoor recreation. "I guess that's out the window now," she said. "No more special honors, no more special breaks. Pay up or stay home now applies to everyone." Benzar encouraged those who oppose the change to submit comments to the Forest Service and also to contact their congressional delegations. The Forest Service is accepting comments until February 1, 2010. Ron

RE: house battery for coach

Hi, Last winter I got two Trojans 105's in TX RGV for $99 each. The Interstate were $89 each. The guy that loaded them for me said that Interstate were just as good. I got Trojans because they were 5 miles closer. You have to call around and buy from a distrubtor not a carryall store. This place had skids of batteries. Installed them myself. The old ones (105's) were 7 years old and only one went bad. Good luck. Ron

RE: A Direct TV question .....

Hi, My son has DTV and has no phone line. He only has cell phone. They don't care. He gets his package and local stations. We use his extra reciever when we travel. No problems in 4 years. Local stations are spot beamed so if out of spot we get no local stations. Works for us. Ron
