RE: Cell Phones.. did you know??

But we have used them several times over the years.
How often do you have to call 911?
Once is enough!

RE: Erie, PA to Grand Isle State Park in Vermont

He has 3 or 4 days to go from Erie, PA to his new job in Grand Isle. I was only suggesting a couple of spots that he might avoid. I lived in Bennington for 5 years and just think the section of 7A from there to Manchester would not be high on my "to see" list. Agree with Camping on the Battenkill as a good stop, however. Don't feel as strongly about that avoid, as I do about getting off 7 onto 189 in Burlington.

RE: Erie, PA to Grand Isle State Park in Vermont

Two suggestions from a 45+ year Vermonter. Take the Route 7 bypass around Bennington. There is nothing to see until you get to Manchester and 7a is a pain these days. Get off in Manchester and take 7/7a north. Just south of Burlington look for 189 which will take you to 89, take 89 north and get off exit 17 for Route 2 and Grand Isle. Trust me, you do not want to take 2 through the Burlington area. You are going to be around there for awhile, and you can see all you want of the city with your Wrangler.
Travel safe and enjoy VT. I wish I was back there almost every day.

RE: Outer Banks traffic busy on Sunday?

Going through Manteo is not a bad idea. You will miss a ton of stop lights and congestion in Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk and Nags Head. That being said, it can still be pretty busy heading down toward Hatteras.

RE: Best places to camp in Vermont and New Hamphire

Never been there, but this is about as close to Montpelier as you can get. It seems to get decent reviews. http://www.rvparkreviews.com/regions/Vermont/Williamstown.html What route are you planning to take? Might have some other suggestions. Lived in VT for 40 years.

RE: Frankenmuth, Michigan Jellystone Park

Was there last year. Nice park, probably the best in the vicinity. A little pricey, but it is a tourist area.

RE: Lake George RV Park Questions.....

Not to steal the thread but I'm thinking of bringing the family up to LG later this summer but we don't toad so I was wondering if there is a place near Lake George RV Resort to rent a car so we can drive around the area and Canada. :B
There is an Enterprise in Queensbury, NY, which is just south of Lake George. They have picked us up at LGRVP a number of times.

RE: Rental cars

We use Enterprise. They almost always have the lowest weekly rates, and best of all they are everywhere. If you use Expedia or Priceline, be sure to check the company website as well - they are sometimes actually cheaper. Just did a quick check and you can get a weekly rental at one Orlando Enterprise location for $200/week for a compact.

RE: car rental vs towing

My weekend rentals are $9.99/day off season and $19.99/day prime season and I just rented for a week on the Outer Banks for $177. With two nearly new, non-towable four down cars, that is the route we go for the time being. That will change in the future, and we will either dolly or trade cars. Of course I also will need brakes because we are only 20K and I would never try it without.

RE: What's the REAL scoop on cell phones & 911?

When you call 911 from a cell phone, please, try to give as much information as you can about where you are. There is one problem that I don't think I have seen addressed. I live in MA, and here ALL 911 calls go to the MA State Police. So, at the very least they must transfer you or your information to the local EMS where you are located, so the more info available, the better. As mentioned above, sometimes the only information they receive is the closest cell tower that your call was sent from. I would be amazed if this is not true in other areas as well, where there is a central wireless 911 response center.

RE: electric vs hydraulic jacks

Have had both. HWH on my class c, and now Power Gear electric on my class a. So far I see little difference other than that the electrics are slower. There is stuff to go wrong with both systems.

X2 for Sunsetview if you don't mind the 20 min drive. I often stayed there when I worked at Old Sturbridge Village and it is an easy trip.

RE: Delaware to Mystic,Ct

Just did 287, 87 to 84 last Sunday. I would never use the GWB, any time of day. It is always a******shoot, both with traffic and condition. That being said, 84 in NY and most of CT is starting to fall apart - potholes - sporadic construction.
Still probably the best choice - but don't expect a smooth ride.
Travel safe. Enjoy Mystic.

RE: OBX Cape Hatteras KOA in late June?

People are hitting that temporary bridge too fast and are losing stuff. While there for a week we saw muffler parts and many unidentified objects on or near the bridge. My daughter hit something with her toad and tore up a front tire. Had to wait two hours at 11:30 PM for road service.
So, just keep an eye out for unexpected debris on and near the bridge and you will be just fine.

RE: Advice on auto rentals

Enterprise is by far the most non-airport available agency. Best bet is to use their web site to see if there is one near where you want to set up camp. Then call and ask about pick up. With a little advance notice they will pick you up and they will have a car. In ten years we have never had a problem. And no, we do not work for Enterprise. One point. Airport agencies almost never will pick you up.
That being said, when we retire next year we will likely start towing. Rental has worked for vacations and weekends.
As for rental price - we just rented a Ford Focus on the Outer Banks for $175 for 7 days. I also have a reservation for a three day weekend at $9.99/day. They always nail you when you rent for a period if time other than by the week, month, or weekend.

RE: OBX Cape Hatteras KOA in late June?

Just left Ocean Waves next door yesterday. KOA got nailed again last year by two major storms. They are valiantly rebuilding again and it looks kike they will be in good shape by June, if not before.
Enjoy - OBX are as beautiful as ever despite nature's battering.

RE: campgrounds

Mystic KOA has some nice sites and is a short drive to Mystic itself. It is pricey, but so is everything in the area. One note, Seaport Campground does not have full hookups, just W/E, in case that is a factor.

RE: A problem I never knew existed.

Some great conversations here. I subscribe to that basic concept, that what one person may like another may hate, and many of those things cannot be changed, like the weather. Any review, commercially done, or user generated, needs to be taken with a grain of salt. And when you get there, you may think everyone was wrong. That is why we have wheels on our rigs. Of course that doesn't help much if you have a two week non-refundable reservation.
