RE: CA. law on 1ton trucks?

I have been fighting with the CHP over this. I had a DOT officer stop at my house and tell me that my volvo needed to have a CA # and I needed to belong to the BIT program. If you are hauling nothing but a camp trailer you DO NOT need to belong to the BIT program. But you do need to register for a motor carrier permit ( $35 ) yearly fee and you have to apply for a CA #. The permit is supposed to link your insurance and the dmv together so they know when you don't pay your ins. It does not require me to insure for $750K. If I wanted to get around the CA and permit I could buy a truck with a GVWR of less than 26,001. This is per vehicle code, 34601 section G. Has to be used solely for towing a camp trailer. http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p255/66cummins/volvo021.jpg

RE: A rendezvous in Marysvale Utah

This would be a great trip for those that don't know about the area! The country is unreal!! October might be a little iffy as far as weather is concerned but would still be worth it.

RE: Moab Info Needed

Maps are good, but they are getting better about marking where you can or can't camp.

RE: Moab Info Needed

There is a road just north of archview campground that runs out to the east where folks dry camp. It is a mile or two north. You can take Kane creek rd out of moab and camp along the river or keep following that rd out, would eventually go out to chicken corners. Lots of dry camping out there. There are a couple of switch back turns that would keep you from taking a big trailer out there.

RE: So angry!!

The only reason the forest service doesn't do controlled burns is because of the enviro's and the APC. When an agency gets sued over and over they run out of fight. People don't understand what makes a healthy forest, fire is a large part along with responsible logging. When you have ladder fuels that allow the fire to move into the tree tops, that is when you encounter large scale tree loss.

RE: I believe in engine brakes!

Henry, Sold a $45K truck to buy a $4K truck that just needed a little TLC ;) Stops the trailer with more than enough brakes :) 22' or 40' as long as you are out enjoying it is all that matters!

RE: Pacific Dunes RV Resort

I was headed home from Los Alamos around 5pm. Saw a trailer sitting there with no TV and I believe a motorhome behind it. Wish I would have stopped, figured you guys must have had it under control with the other rig stopped. :S

RE: I believe in engine brakes!

doznfire, you wont be passn me, look at my sig, i got the EB! and i still use safe braking practices. ask an old timer truck driver if he ever had a Jake Brake fail. it happens. if it happens to me i'll still be safe. I'll be just fine. Never had an EB till my 06 mega cab. Used to drive an old 66 chevy 4x4 with drum brakes. Trust me, you name it I'll drive it. Oh, And I will pass you, up the hill or down..... :) http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p255/66cummins/volvo024.jpg

RE: I believe in engine brakes!

well, well, well. you folks need a refresher course? ok here goes you can go down a grade too slow 1 million times, but you'll only go down a grade too fast once. in the course of driving often you will come across the occasional steep grade. the technique that best suits successful navigation of such a grade follows: if the operator is familiar with the grade choose a safe speed (we'll use 35mph) and allow your vehicle speed to increase in 5 mph increments (to 40mph) then apply stabbing brake pressure to decrease your speed back to the original 35mph. as your vehicle increases speed back to 40 due to the grade, you are allowing your brakes to cool. repeat this process until you reach the end of the grade. if the operator is unfamiliar with the grade he/she is approaching choose the slowest speed within the law and incease speed appropriately using the technique prescribed above. this technique is effective for all drivetrains and braking systems of working order. if this technique sounds familiar to you thats because it works. if its not familiar to you, you should try it once. IT WORKS. This isn't needed to often if you have an EB. If you aren't sure who is running them it will be us guys passing you at 55+ down the grade and never touching the brakes. No stabbing involved :o

RE: I believe in engine brakes!

Oh boy....I'm starting to see a new rivalry with some of you guys: the "Exhaust Brakers" vs. the "Non-Exhaust Brakers". I felt some tension in some of the posts by guys without the brake. I'll see how this goes. LOL.... I'm surprised some didn't make the snake oil claim. If you notice those that have them will recommend them and the ones that have never had one claim their not needed. Then we have gasser boys ......... ?? Don't really know what their problem is unless its just they have to be against something thats diesel related. My '03 truck in sig with the Jacobs has over 148k and has never needed any type of brake service and shouldn't for another couple of years. We see the same with Bedsaver/EGT gages/boost gages/tranny oil temp gages/diesel fuel additives/on and on/etc. They never used the product so it doesn't work for other folks. I drive some trucks with the Pacbrake. A true engine brake. I drive some with no engine brake of any kind and then for daily run around and camping I drive a gas engine. I have found that only 6-7% slopes can be handled by any of the three types I drive. It just takes a little bit of gray matter between the ears. What really disturbs me is how many folks are replacing brains with HP and other fancy gadgets such as exhaust brakes, etc. Nothing wrong with them but they should never be used to replace brains. Before interstate highways we had much steeper hills then just 6-7% that the interstates have today. In those days the semis had big 230-250hp Cummins engines and 238 Detroits and we did fine. We didn't have disc brakes either. Trucks crossed the mountains for many years before high hp and engine brakes and without the shallow 6-7% slopes of interstates. Today, even the factory 325+ hp isn't enough for a little pickup truck! More horsepower up and exhaust brakes etc down may be able to compensate for loss of intelligence on occasion but.... Too much gadgetry disrupts Darwin. A 200hp with a manual tranny would require a little more concentration on what they are doing and if they can't handle it... stay home! Not real sure what you are trying to say here. Are folks like me that run a programmer and an EB dumb???? I guarantee that my truck with a programmer runs lower egt's, gets better fuel mileage and stops better with the EB than the same truck in stock form pulling the same load.

RE: Class 8 Freightliner hitch swapping question

I built my own for my volvo. I used the slider hitch out of my mega cab. I took these pics during mock up, it was tacked together, then I hooked up to the trailer to make sure I liked the final ride height before I finish welded. I'll get by with this for awhile until I can build an air ride hitch. I really felt that the side to side pivot is very important to keep from tearing the hitch from the trailer :) http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p255/66cummins/hitch.jpg http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p255/66cummins/IMG00073-20090429-1906-1.jpg http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p255/66cummins/volvo024.jpg
