RE: Highway 191 north to Flaming Gorge

I have kids in Vernal and have been that way numerous times and never thought it particularly severe. There are about 9-10 switchbacks and I would assume 7-8% grades. Of course, being from Texas, by the time I got to Vernal, I had already been through most of the Colorado Rockies.

RE: Kindle question

I have owned 3 different Kindles. If you really want a Kindle and you read in the dark or you read outside alot, get a Kindle paperwhite, you won't regret it. Otherwise, I think an Ipad is better for overall benefit. I Kindle on my iphone, desktop and paperwhite. Don't leave home without reading material!

RE: GMC Terrain - Odometer WhileTowing

We are towing ours and pulling the #32 fuse (discrete logic fuse, whatever that is). Our odometer "is not" registering. Some dash lighting comes on, but goes off after a few seconds.

RE: ID Theft Plans--Your experience, please

If you have homeowners insurance, you can buy ID theft coverage for around $25 per year. Sorry I don't know much about the coverage, but would assume it is an expense reimbursement and not something that might actually protect your ID. From the Travelers Insurance site:
Travelers identity fraud expense reimbursement coverage can cover:
Expense reimbursements up to $25,000 with no deductible for named expenses incurred to restore your identity including:
Reimbursement for Medical ID Fraud Expenses
Travel Expenses
New Government IDs
Tax ID Fraud-Related Costs
Lost wages
Attorneys' fees
Resolution services to help reclaim your identity and restore credit
Guidance from one of our consumer fraud specialists
With our fraud protection services, you'll have the financial assistance and professional support of our consumer fraud specialists to reclaim your identity. Travelers' identity fraud expense reimbursement coverage is an invaluable addition to any homeowners insurance policy you may have.

RE: Installed Blue Ox Base Plate on 2012 Scion xB

Just put a Blue Ox baseplate on our GMC Terrain. I thought my wife was going to die when she walked up and saw the front facia laying on the grass. They said 4.5 hours on the Terrain, but probably took me at least 6 with breaks.

RE: Best way from Galvenston to Beaumont

I'm not sure that it is scenic, but it is definitely shorter and typically quicker (weekend ferry delays can be substantial). You can take 146 through Kemah and Baytown to I-10. A large part of that will be 4 lane or freeway.

RE: ReadyBrake/Brute System with Equinox Questions

Their instructions will show you a picture of approximately where to drill the hole. It was on the bottom, about .5 in. from the front edge and about .5 in. from the edge closest to the hatch. There was probably some wiggle room on that, but I don't think it can go too far to the rear or the light box may not slide back into place. Blue Ox has a installation guide on their website and it shows a pic of their installation (although I think the light body was for an earlier model).
Here is a baseplate installation video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFowqBZppEo

RE: ReadyBrake/Brute System with Equinox Questions

Good question. I just put my Blue Ox base plate on our GMC Terrain last weekend. My chore for this weekend is to install my Ready Brake cable and wiring and I haven't looked at the firewall at all yet. Their website does show that the system is compatible with both the Equinox and Terrain. The install on the Blue Ox base plate wasn't technically hard, but it didn't just slide in place either. It would have been easier on a lift and I am definitely too old to be crawling around on the ground like that. The installation of the bulb and socket kit for the lighting was actually easier than I expected. I got the Ready Brute Elite kit and it did come with the brake monitor and safety cables. I bought the bulb and socket kit and the 6 wire electrical cable separate. You will have to specify which tow bar ends you need to fit your base plate.

RE: ABA Travel Park in Houston, Texas

I must not understand something. You show you are from Sour Lake and you want to move to Winnie, but you are only 13 miles closer to Houston? What exactly are you gaining? Why not find some place west of Houston and drive 20 miles rather than 70.

RE: Traveling from New Orleans to San Antonio

We have stayed in the Walmart at Katy Mills several times. Noisy, but has security. We have also stayed at Camping world; quiet, but remote. Holiday World RV (just west of CW) has small rv park. State Park at San Felipe just west of Brookshire

Why don't you call the nearest RV dealer and see what they charge. Just a couple of years ago, Camping world was only charging me $35 per month for storage. Maybe an rv park?

RE: Damage by a storage facility. Who should pay?

They can "say" anything, but there is a nice little thing known as Care, Custody and Control. You may be held liable for damages to the property of others based on the very fact that their property is in your Care, Custody and Control. You have a legal obligation to protect their property. If they don't keep the limbs trimmed and one falls on your RV, it's their fault. Theft problems and they didn't take any steps to prevent it, it's their fault. They take your money, they accept some level of responsibility, no matter what the sign or even the contract says.

RE: What to do with bleach solution from sanitizing fresh system

Rockhill - Cities do everything they can to "not" treat storm water. Treating sewage, whether gray or black, costs money. Cities actually will smoke their sewer lines looking for leaks to prevent infiltration of storm water. I will tell you that most cities I work with have to chlorinate their treated water, but must de-clorinate it before the actual release into streams. Some plants us a UV system on their treated water prior to release. BTW, a properly designed municipal sewer system will have almost no smell.

RE: Getting around Houston (US59)

I can think of alot of cities I would avoid, but non rush hour on US 59 in Houston is not one of them. From 9am-3:30pm you should be able to drive the speed limit to the west loop. From the west loop to Hwy 288 will be slower but from 288 north, you should be able to get out of town without ever slowing down.
If you take the 610 loop, it will be slower from 59 to 290, but you shouldn't have any problems after that. Typically, we just breeze thru town other than true rush hour. By the way, in my experience, during rush hours if you have to stop and pay, the beltway will probably be the slower route.

RE: Galveston

After you turn west on 87 at High Island, realize that almost the whole of Bolivar Peninsula was underwater and a huge percentage of the beach houses you see are replacements for houses destroyed by Hurricane Ike. Sandpiper is near the beach end of Ferry Rd. The most talked about RV park is Delanera which is just past the west end of the sea wall. It is slightly more protected from the gulf. The state park is several miles further west. Much of it was destroyed by Ike. The beaches can't compare with the eastern gulf and surely not the carribean, but was a wonder to an East Texas boy who grew up swimming in muddy ponds.

RE: Galveston

146 is the shortcut we have always used to get from I-10 down to the NASA/Clear Lake area. Much shorter than going all the way to I-45, but some areas will have alot of red lights. No reason not to use the ferry, however. Definitely shorter. Off 146, go down to Top Water Grill in San Leon while you are in the area and when in Galveston go to Katie's down on the wharf and get you some fresh shrimp to boil. Our favorite restaurant on Galveston is Shrimp & Stuff, 3901 Avenue O. It's a local place, nothing fancy and everything is on Styrofoam, but we reall like it. Gaido's is the traditional place. You'll like it too.
