RE: Heber Springs AR

Race track is 10 miles west of Batesville in Locust Grove, which is about 25 miles from Greers Ferry Lake. Google COE Greers Ferry for campgrounds, there are about 17 campgrounds around the lake, 10 of which accept reservations.

RE: Ford 6.0 Scan Gauge II Question

Have had ScanGauge for 3 years. You really need to measure and adjust speed/distance - I did mine by a 100 mile interstate mile marker comparison, and possibly redo every 15-20K miles to adjust for tire wear. I have found it's fuel measurement extremely accurate (comparing what the gauge measures as used to what it takes to fill up, which is usually a one-time adjustment setting).

RE: Co. Rt.69 Walsenbrg-Texas Creek?

Very little auto traffic, even less truck. Only 700 foot elevation difference between Walsenburg and Salida. About 85 miles.

RE: Should you travel with a full tank of Gas?

Yes, Some intank fuel pumps depend on the gasoline in the tank to cool the pump. If you travel with tank below half full the pump runs too hot and will eventually fail. Again, only SOME pumps. Many intank pumps are cooled only by the fuel going through the pump - not by the pump itself being immersed in fuel, and are not affected by how much fuel is in the tank. These pumps usually are at the top of the tank not the bottom.

RE: I-40 in Knoxville & Nashville

I agree with taylorcat. The I-840 loop swings south of Nashville from near Lebanon at exit 235(when traveling westbound), and rejoins I-40 at exit 176. It is only 16 miles further using 840 than staying on 40.

RE: Durango/Silverton Train

Another vote for train up, bus back and ride on the right side. Also, the open cars do have a roof over them. Bring a light jacket. Keep the camera ready!!! Pat If riding the open car, make that a dark-colored light jacket due to cinders. Also suggest glasses or sunglasses.

RE: Hwy 7 From Hot Springs to Harrison Ar

Google Nimrod Lake, it's on Hwy 7 between Hot Springs and Russellville. Operated by Corp of Engineers. Nice campsites. Tons of camping options in Russellville, some public, mostly privately operated.

RE: Chama New Mexico To Alamosa Colorado

Total distance is about 76 miles, but only the first 20 or so is mountain driving, the next 25 has little elevation change but some curves. The last 30 miles (Antonito to Alamosa) is almost perfectly straight, passing through 2 or 3 small towns. Enjoy the railroad! If you ride the train on day 1, you can "chase" it on day 2 when you head to Alamosa, and will know where to stop your vehicle for picture-taking.

RE: State Tax..

If you itemize, the federal table/worksheet is fairly generous on sales tax (table is income-based), and may be worth more than the sales INCOME tax deduction, particularly if you are retired and/or live in a state with little or no income tax. If you use the irs table, there are certain big-ticket items you are allowed to add to the table calculated amount, including RV/trailer/boat purchase, home remodeling, and "electronics". The other legal option is to keep track of ALL purchases and report your actual sales taxes paid. In Tennessee we have NO state "payroll" tax, but there is a tax on dividends and certain other investments (pension, etc)with the first $20,000 earned excluded.

RE: Lowest gas prices you remember.

Memphis 1970 - I remember a "Lion" station with multiple octanes - 5 or 6 different grades from mixing regular and premium at the pump (station had 2 bulk tanks). Prices ranges from .19 to .24 per gallon. Coke, burger, fries at McDonald's - 15,15,15 and 2 cents tax = 47 cents.

RE: Better of the 'High Mileage' Motor Oil Options?

In the "old days" it was common to use a heavier oil 10w40/ 20/w50 in higher mileage engines replacing 10w30 - but today I would recommend staying with the original specified oil weight. Most of the "high mileage" oils have a revised additive package aimed (or marketed) to help seals. Higher weight oils will hurt some on gas mileage, and additionally make really cold starts harder. One option might be to use 4 quarts of regular 10w30 Castrol, and 1 quart of Castrol High Mileage 10w30 and see if you notice any difference.

Off Season State Park discount surfing

If you stay at state parks, carefully "google" state park websites. I discovered today that Arkansas offers senior (62 and up) discounts for weekdays (50% to residents, 25% to non-residents). Other states may have similar programs.

RE: south of nashville

840 is 76 miles in length, beginning at I-40 exit 176, swings south then east. It intersects I-65 at mm 59, then I-24 at mm 74 and continues north to rejoin I-40 at mm 235. It is approximately 16 miles further than staying on I-40, but avoids lower speed limits/much higher traffic volume I-40 has through urban Nashville, especially in/during rush hour. Definitely advisable if coming from the south (I-65 or I-24) and taking I-40 east or west. Longer distance if traveling into and out of Nashville on I-40. No advantage if coming into Nashville from the north. (It's basically a southern loop around the south side of Nashville).

RE: Same tune, different dance - Toyota Tacoma Question

Tacoma V6 with factory tow package are rated at 6500#. Tow package includes higher capacity alternator, bigger battery, oil and transmission coolers, seven pin trailer connector, and a pigtail for installing a brake controller at the dashboard.

RE: Sluggish Steering With New Tires and Alignment

Replaced Dunlops with Mich LTX MS2's about 2k miles ago. There definitely was some "break-in". Also lost about 1 mpg. May have been partially due to the LTX being .4 inch wider tread width, although replaced with same size (245/75-16). Also adjusted ScanGuage to correct odometer error. Only the positive side, much better handling, particularly in wet conditions, no more wheel slip from a stop on wet pavement.

RE: Getting Ultravan #362 ready for 2013 CORSA Convention in MI.

Had a 65 Corsa convertible in high school in 1968 (4 carb 140hp 4sp). Only mechanical work I had done was a clutch, but I remember the Chevy dealership had a special part that fit a floor jack for removing the entire drivetrain - might make work easier if you could find one. Best wishes on your projects.

RE: Grilling A Turkey: At Altitude?

My colder weather experience has been that the amount of wind on a cold day can significantly increase cooking time with either a smoker or covered cooker (Weber/kettle). Definitely a small increase in time on a calm day, more so on a windy one. For smokers, there are external blankets available to reduce the wind/cold effect. And I agree, more charcoal/fuel helps.

RE: DEEP FRIED TURKEY

One suggestion, after initial measure with water and removing the bird, mark the outside of your fryer for oil level. Next time you fry, just buy the same weight bird (give or take a pound), and you're good to go without having through the water measurement again. Also suggest having the bird outside the refrigerator at least 30 minutes before frying.

RE: Birmingham AL to Memphis,TN

Hi from AZ. . . That's a great route except for the ends. I-20 in downtowm B'ham is awful, and the connecting to 'future I-22' is not fun. In Memphis, the traffic is scary (LOTS of trucks) and I-55 is a construction nightmare. I went thru this past summer (twice) and when I brought my travel trlr West, I didn't. If they ever get that 840 bypass thing finished south of Nashville, I'll go that way. Regards, Craig Construction on I-55 in sw Memphis is almost completed. OP would only encounter this section if headed across to Arkansas on the I-55 bridge. No problems on the I-40 bridge route. Can't do anything about the trucks, especially the last few miles of Highway 78 is our busiest non-interstate truck route.

RE: Sylvania silverstar ultra bulbs - worth the money?

Considering the age of your bulbs, you might try just replacing them with a good set of standard bulbs; if concerned about the Silverstars life - after 12 years of use I would expect you'll notice a difference.
