RE: Colter Bay, WY

The is Colter Bay Village Campground run by the park service I think. Then there is Colter Bay Village RV which is run by a private concern. The Rv park takes reservations. The campgrounds do not.

RE: Yellowstone NP or North East?

I love the west and go every summer. We just sold our house in the east and will be headed there to life. But...in your situation I recommend the NE this time. Acadia is a great park. I have been there 6 times. It is my favorite on the east cost. The have some NP campgrounds whick is boondocking. We also enjoyed a week in the White Mtns. of NH. You have to buy a forest pass to park. But there is lots of hiking and Franconia Notch State Park has a nice cg. Mt. Washington is great. We took the cog railway up. But only go if it is totally clear weather. May is not usually crowded there. The black flies may be a pain at least in ME. Acadia not bad though. But inland they could drive you nuts. I don't know about NH. But they are bad in May in they Adirondacks. I don't care for cities so I can't tell you anything there. Could be a great trip with less driving than the trip west.

Progressive Fulltimers Insurance catch

I check with Progressive today about fulltimer insurance. I, like many fulltimers don't intent to live where my "domicile" is. If my mail service is in SD, FL or TX, I don't intend to spend much time there. Progressiv informed me their policy for fulltimers assumes you will be in your domicile state for at least 6mons/yr. I haven't called any others yet like GMAC. I know several full timers and they don't meet this requirement. Comments?

RE: Brunswick Md campground

I'm into trains as well. Never done the Brunswick CG. But that CSX line just isn't that busy. I suggest you go to the Station Inn in PA. It is on the old Pennsy (formerly Conrail now NS) mainline west of the famous Horseshoe Curve. Depending on how big your rig is you can park behind the Inn. He has 20A electric and water but no dump. He also has a bathroom available with shower etc. You are entitle to one breakfast included. I go up and sleep in my van. Cheaper than the rooms. But there is generally a lot of train traffic. One of my favorite spots. Never had my 5er there though. You can sit on the porch and watch trains 24/7 if you want. The Inn is about 150' from the tracks. You'll love it. Or, just go and rent a room. It's not that expensive and he has a Jan/Feb 40% off sale going this year, again. Fun to watch trains in the snow. Another option is to camp at Prince Gallitzin State Park in PA and just go down to Cresson, Gallitzin, Altoona or Horseshoe and watch trains. The state park is electric only but with full restrooms with showers. Nice park and not too far to the trains.

RE: Codorus State Park, PA

I worked in a campground for 2 summers. Some campers think the rules are for someone else. Pet owners were a real problem. Next came people wanting to put huge rugs on the grass that we were trying to keep growing for their enjoyment. BUT frequently people just don't read the rules when they arrive. I'm often guilty of that. I once parked off the pavement at Yellowstone and got a note on my windshield. Had I read the rules, it wouldn't have come up. But it was just a warning. We did a PA park this week and I was off the pavement. I didn't read the rules. But, there was no grass for 3'. No one said anything. Lucky me. Codorus is an ok park. Not one of our favorites but ok. Just stay off the grass. :) We had an open site that was not level front to back. Not the best site I have ever had. I the summer the place can be kind of noisey. It is close to York, PA and the residents come there to swim in the pool. Campground was quiet enough though. Have fun.

US6 Spanish Fork to I70 in UT

What are the grades on that road? I will be dragging the rig in my sig. Leaving Jackson about 16 Oct 2009. Thanks

RE: Global warming in Wyoming

WOW! Casper colder than Jackson! It only got down to about 17 here. We had about 6" of snow in town Sunday night into Moday. But Tues. the sun came out and melted it all. Some roads were close in Yellowstone due to snow. Caused some tourists problems. I doesn't help that the road between Madison and Norris is close for construction. Road conditions in YNP 307-344-2117 for recorded message.

RE: Off-season Eastern PA/NJ/DE - who's open?

Personally don't care for Delaware Seashore SP. Sanded parking lot. Just my take. French Creek State Park in PA has a loop or two open year round, electric only with shower houses and dumpstation. Nice park. For a reasonable off season non-RV getaway, check out the Dunes Hotel in OC City, MD. Their rooms are reasonable off season. Also AARP discount. Right on the north end of the boardwalk. We like the Festival of Lights. Eat at the Dunes and/or the Sunset Grill.

RE: Great Outdoor Resort in Titusville?

I have friends who live there. Very nice setup. We have been there twice for a week each. Fairly quiet but not far from I95. If the wind is right you can hear traffic but it is not bad. Some of the lakes (ponds) have gators in them and there are lots of bird. The restaraunt at the golf club has pretty good food. I'm not sure where they put the transients. There was one group spot that was literally a parking lot. But I think they rent out other spots. Some are really nice. It is a mixed community. Some are just sites, many are homes with large RV ports. They have a pool and common area. But no crafts or activities that I'm aware of. Give it a look.

RE: four corners camping

As an aside, I think I read that they surveyed the Four Corners area and determine the states don't meet at the monument. I wonder if it is due to tectonic plate shift or it was always wrong. On edit again: Wikipedia has a write up on Four Corners. USNGS said "To settle the dispute, a spokesperson for the U.S. National Geodetic Survey admitted that the monument is placed 1,807 feet (551 m) east of where modern surveyors would mark the point. However, he defended the accuracy of the 1875 survey, stating surveyors "nailed it" considering the primitive tools of the day." In other words, it's close enough for government work. On edit: :) And I agree with him. Use to be the Native Americans had a flee market type thing set up there. I don't know if they still do. I haven't been there in years. But if you are in the neighborhood, stop. There is a fee. It use to be a buck. But I don't know now. The Native Americans run it. Mesa Verde is an interesting park. But I think it is about 20 miles from the main highway, Rt. 160 if you care. We stated at the Mesa Verde RV Park near the entrance. It wasn't anything special but it was ok.

RE: West Virginia vacation

219 in WV is twisty turny up and down. But it is wide enough for a moho. I did it with my rig below. Watch out for low trees in some of the state park cgs. We came into Watago the wrong way and the roads were not suited for our rig. The campground we wanted was closed so we went through the park. The other cg was full. So...we moved on to Pipestem. Pipestem had high shoulders. I bounced the 5er off the truck. Just be careful. Check out my website for some pics and info here at WV.

RE: West Virginia vacation

Don't forget a ride on the Cass Scenic Railroad or the Durbin Rocket. We like the previously noted parks as well as Babcock, Holly River, North Bend, Watago, Beartown (day use) and Blackwater Falls. Didn't care too much for the cg at Blackwater Falls. But it has been several years since we were there. They may have improved it some. WV is a great place for outdoor activities in the east. Leaves will vary a lot through the state. We were there several years ago and one hill would be changed. The next wouldn't and the next had no leaves left.

RE: Yellowstone after Labor Day

I work the Vistor Center in Jackson, WY. Jackson hotels have been very full since Labor Day weekend. Lots of events going on. We get reports on YNP and their lodging has been full most of the summer and still is. The campgrounds that are open are full. YNP set records this year. Jackson had more rooms available before Labor Day than after. I don't know how next year will be. But I wouldn't advise coming here without a reservation. This is my 5th summer working here. Visitation is busy but sales tax revenues have been off. In other words, people are coming but not spending as much money on unnecessary stuff. Right now we are getting foreigners and older folks. Repeat: DO NOT COME WITHOUT A RESERVATION. And yes I'm shouting. :) I'm sending people to Idaho for hotel rooms and campgrounds. But, who knows what next year will bring.

RE: Yellowstone

I have done 14 with my rig, no worries. You should be ok. Stop at the Burgess Jnt. VC. Remember, the road between Madison and Norris is closed for the season for bridge repair. All YNP cgs that are open were full yesterday. Really busy this year. Actually, all lodging was full. Hopefully it will clear out Sunday. But who knows. It has been a crazy year here in Jackson Hole/YNP.

RE: Color Change in Grand Teton

I am there now, 9/19. Things have just started. I will know more tomorrow because we are driving up to the south entrance of YNP to fish. Normally the colors start to change in Moran and work south. I'm told there are some nice orange colors in the Snake River Canyon (RT 89 to Alpine) right now. That orange tree is usually the first to change. You may have to drive around to find everything. I usually get lots of nice pics at the Oxbow Bend area in the fall. Also at Menor's Ferry area at the church. Lots of spots. Should be about right 9/27. Last year that was a bit later. But seems that even though it has been warm during the day, the leaves are changing a bit earlier this year. This pic taken 9/30/08 just east of Oxbow Bend. http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l276/SRK_03/P9300175.jpg

RE: Natchez Trace where to stop

We stayed in Vicksburg at the Ameristar CG. Not fancy but full hookups, fairly level cement pads and 1 free breakfast buffet at the casino per person. We did the battlefield (2 days). We drove down to Natchez and left the 5er at Vicksburg. Stopped at the Grand Gulf Military Monument and it was ok. We just drove around Natchez. They have a beautiful visitor center and the town is on the Mississippi River. We crossed over into LA and went to the Frogmore Cotton Plantation and museum. It was ok too. I'm not a Native American History buff so the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians didn't excite me. Wife wanted to stop at the Miss. Craft Center on the north side of Jackson. Had some ok stuff. Not much in the way of RV parking though. Drove up to Tupelo, MS and stayed at Trace State Park on Rt. 6 just west of town. Great park. FHU non-primium, 30A site on the lake for $18!!! We broke a spring coming up the Trace so we spent several days at the park trying to get repairs. Spring didn't break on the Trace. I just let go there. We took the opportunity to drive up to Corinth Battlefield and Shiloh Battlefield. Worth the trip. Other than that, we stopped at the visitor center and checked out the free campgrounds on the Trace. That was about it. I'm not into that period of history so we didn't spend a lot of time. Ya seen one Indian mount ya seen 'em all. But the road was good and the drive was relaxing and I would do it again. Have fun. Oh, they have a short swamp walk that was nice. I forget exactly where it is. Can't recognize it on the map.

RE: Construction Yellowstone South Entrance

Construction is from Lizard Creek CG north to Flagg Ranch. Still torn up as of this date. Doesn't look like they will get it paved this year. It has been torn up all summer. It is passable. Delays up to 30 minutes. There is also construction on RT 287 on Togwotee Pass for about 20 miles. Delays up to 30 mins. Scheduled to finish 7/15/2011 or so I think. Currently they are doing tar and chip around the Jackson Hole airport. That shoud finish up this week. Up to 30 min. delays there too. Road between Madison and Norris closed for the year. There is a bit more scattered around but these are the main ones. North West WY Road Construction from WYDOT. Big construction year here in Jackson Hole/Yellowstone Area.

RE: Highway 191

Should be good road. There was construction there in June for a widening project. I understand it is complete now. So...it should be a great drive. Takes about 4 hours from I80 to Jackson.

RE: Western NC to Bar Harbor, Me.

I believe I would go up I81 though PA to I84 to I90 (Mass TP). Pike up I290 at X10 and cruise on over to I495 over to I95. Avoid NYC and NJ at all costs. This would be the interstate route. You could also do I81 to I88 in NY. Then pick your way over to ME. Also could go up into NH and take Rt. 2 east. I hear Rt. 2 is a bit of a mess though.
