RE: Leftover Mashed Potatoes

One time, when I had lots of mashed potatoes left, I used them in corn chowder and it worked great.

RE: One pot tuna casserole

My Hubby does NOT like tuna so I made tuna-noodle casserole with hamburger. Just follow tuna casserole recipe. He really likes that.

RE: just picked 50# of assorted apples......

I'm waiting for the Mutsu apples. I live right near the OH, and IN state lines. The orchard that I go to is in Indiana and they don't pick Mutsu apples until the 15th of October. Oh, they are so good.

RE: Pork Shoulder Roast

We like it just roasted in the oven. I brown it on all sides really well, cover, and roast. Use a meat thermometer tho...over done is dry. Then make the most scrumptious gravy with the drippings!

RE: fresh green beans and new potatoes

We like green beans and new potatoes too but we do them differently. Cook the beans, and the potatoes, but not together. Make a thin white sauce and add the beans, potatoes, and additional butter....oh, so good.

RE: Fried green tomatoes

I'm one of the odd ones...I like fried ripe tomatoes. I dredge in flour, salt, pepper, and fry...oh, yummy! I also eat fried cucumbers. Peel, slice lengthwise, roll in flour, salt, and pepper. When I was at home we ate them in a sandwich, but now I just eat them without the bread.

RE: Convenience Food For Camping

We always take sausage gravy mix - the kind that only requires water, refrigerated biscuits, and canned chili beans to eat right out of the can or over hot dogs. That's mainly it. I don't really like taking macaroni and cheese because you still have to boil the pasta and I won't put that water cooled or not, down my drain. In the past, we put it in zip lock bags then dumped it in the trash.
I've always poured the water, from macaroni, down the drain. Hope I'm not doing something that will hurt anything.

RE: Replacing Thermostat

Probably a dumb question, but our furnace/ac work off a remote control...could we install a Hunter for that?

RE: Cheap comfy pants cost me hundreds of dollars!

I was at a graduation open house a couple weeks ago and I saw a man walking funny and nearly spilling his plate of food. He also had a glass in his other hand. I asked him if I could hold his plate for him. He said his pants were falling but he didn't want to spill his food! I've had a good chuckle over it. I held his food and glass while he hitched up his pants.

RE: Need cooler climate for July-August

It's just hard for me to believe it is hotter and more humid in Michigan than Alabama, TN, GA etc in July and August. Or maybe even AS bad!
People come down here all the time from up North and vow they just can't breath! I mean it is so hot that you will literally burn your hands if you forget and not cover up your steering wheel, or accidently touch the metal on your seat belt, your brain fries in the heat, the bottom of your feet burn on concrete, your clothes are soaked as soon as you walk outside.
Paris..it is has got to be cooler in Michigan or anywhere north of you!!
Michigan isn't as hot and humid as the southern states. I live in southern MI and we do have some hot, humid, days, but not like NC, TN, AL, etc., and not many then. I'd like to have a lot more 'hot' days than we have...we seem to have a long, long, long time of cold...finally we're able to have windows open, during the day, but still really cools down at night.

RE: Drip vs Percolator - Search for the perfect cup of Joe

A variation SidKaye's method with the Melitta filter is what I am now using - WITH GREAT RESULTS.
I got a GSI Java Drip Coffee Maker (saw in May CampingLIfe) 30oz size uses #4 cone(also comes in 50oz uses#6 cone). Bought it as alternative for Melitta Elec Coffee Maker as do a lot of dry camping & didn't want to wait till 9AM for coffee. East clean up - holds heat well. I LIKE IT.
Gotta get one of those. I've been struggling with finding the right coffee maker for the RV. I do a lot of boondocking, so something that does not require the generator is desirable.
The problem I have w/ french press is the cleanup. I love the french press coffee, but getting all the grounds out of the plunger and the carafe is a pain. If it's not raining, i'll usually take both around to the outdoor shower for cleaning as I am not a big fan of coffee grounds in the grey tank.
If anyone has a good method for cleaning the french press w/o getting grounds in the grey tank, i'm all ears!
I battled with the clean up with my French Press too so now I use a hand held strainer...put some water, in the leftover grounds, swish a bit and pour through the strainer...might have to do it twice. Then I wipe with a paper towel before I wash it.

RE: Long Term Stay Advice, etiquette, location, etc

Maybe I didn't read it right, but around here if it's a seasonal price, that means you can stay every weekend, plus two full weeks, for that price. If you stay 24-7 you pay by the month.

RE: Huge 5th wheel

Or these:
http://www.beletti.com/?p=259
You will need at least a stock 2001 PSD for towing.. :)
They were all white, two with fiber glass siding and one with aluminum...that was the newest.

RE: Huge 5th wheel

The only problem is that they(53') are not RVs(399 sq ft max) and can not be registered as an RV. By law they are HUD housing(400 sq ft, or more) and must be titled and registered as a Mobile Home. This can present a multitude of problems from insurance to state permits.
The man said that California is the only state they can't travel in and that a regular driver's license is all that's required.

RE: Huge 5th wheel

what were they using to tow them?
They all had a white semi tractor to pull it. One had been modified by somehow moving the wheels...the other two had tandem axles...The man said that the ministry will have trouble disposing of the altered one for commercial purposes when they are through with it.
