RE: Toyo vs Hankook Tires

I purchased TOYO tires because of price and made in Japan and US both countries have very good process controls. Other manufactures like Hankook have production facilities in countries that have not always demonstrated good process controls (i.e China, Hungary, Korea...). It is a personal choice and some what of a gamble whatever you choose but maybe you can stack to odds if you know the manufacturing source. RE: Flood! What now?

I had the same thing happen to me. I rented a carpet cleaner and using only the vacuum wand we removed water for 8+ hours, way more than 5 gal. When we stopped picking up water I set the AC to 74 degrees (too hot and mold will start forming, too cold and the water does not evaporate as well). I put a large barrel fan in the hall and purchased the biggest dehumidifier I could find 65q/h. The firs hour or so of operation we filled the dehumidifier's almost 2 gallon holding tank. That went on for almost 24 hours. As I remember after 24 hours it took about 6 hours to fill the tank. We ran it like this for 2 weeks. Measuring the humidity over the two week it went from the upper 80's down to 26%. 26% is about as good as you will ever get in Florida on a summer day. I remove the fan and left the dehumidifier in there until winter. As part of our normal routine we run the dehumidifier all summer long. To get the water out of the padding you must reduce the humidity low enough it wicks up through the carpet. Forgot this part: I opened every access panel possible, my slides are flat to I put stuff under slide out carpet where it overlaps the coach carpet to ensure air was getting to it. I was very lucky no apparent damage but you have to jump on it before the mold starts. If the mold does start call a carpet specialist. They have stuff that may kill the mold. good luck

I to have Passport America but (my opinion) I am finding many of the camp grounds we visit quit using it or have invoked a lot of restrictions. I am concerned if this trend continues they wont be around long enough for a Life time membership to pay off.

RE: Adding third roof air conditioner, fitment question.

I have the same problem. Here in Florida it gets hot in the summer and the two 13K BTU units I have run all the time and just make it cool enough. There is no margin so for me a 3rd unit is an option. Thought about replacing them with 15K but you only gain 4K of additional cooling. A 3rd unit give me 13K and some backup. Don't know about your wall problem my center vent is dead center of the hall. The biggest problem is routing power to the unit. Will have to figure out what phase one AC is on with the Micro and use the other for the third AC.

RE: Generator Question

It makes since there could be a power sag if the generator is in low idle mode and then a nominal 1.3K inductive load is applied. Fixed RPM generators have product of inertia stored up in the rotating mass. When the load increased they can use that inertia to carry the increase load until the governor/fuel system respond and start adding more energy into the system to minimize power sag. The 8K quite diesel has to do all the same and increase the speed of the rotating mass to generate more power. It would stand to reason from a idle position to a nominally 1.3k load there would be a power sag. Just wanted to check. We are planning to use the generator a lot this summer and if there is a problem we need to know it now not while camping. Thanks

Generator Question

The other day I was in the motor home on generator power, it was cool outside so the heat pump was on. The heat pump cycled on every 10-15 minutes. I was watching TV (satellite). I noticed the generator would idle down to a very slow speed (no load). When the heat pump cycled on there was a power sag that caused the satellite receiver to reset. The generator would speed up to normal and pickup the load. All this happened in just a second or two. I assume because of the low speed of the generator there is a lag time for it to spin up and generate enough power to pickup the load of the heat pump. Is this normal? Don't think I have ever noticed this before but it make since. My solution was to turn the inverter on and thus run the satellite receiver of that. Worked great.

We have a 40 ft coach and are weekenders as well. I have done a lot of bonddocking with our coach. It's great, between the huge 12v battery supply, inverter, and generator power is not a problem. We just have to keep an eye on our fresh water, it can go quickly. I have two 5g jugs I can use to fetch water if necessary. It's a pain but better than running out. We go camping on average once a month and every two weeks we drive the coach around. Nominally 40+ miles just to exercise it. When exercising it I like to use that time to practice tight situations. So we purposely take it places you would not think possible. Like you we live in the country so we take this opportunity to do some of our weekly shopping. Been in just about every type of parking lot you can think of. The big thing to watch out for are trees. A really good benefit of shopping with the RV is the boys and I hang out in the RV and watch movies; much better than waiting in the store for mom to finish whatever. We have a couple of small air mattress that quickly inflate with a blower. It takes only a few minutes to set up a place for the boys to sleep. In the morning again it only takes a few minutes to break it down and stow. So like others have said try it for a while before you take a bath on trade.

We to have had our troubles with RV's but it's always been cyclic, good days will come. I had an estimate to replace the gaskets on my RV (4 slides) the price was $1000. That was a year ago. After closer inspection they decided not to replace them and for me to just keep them lubed. Mine don't pop out when we open the slide so I made a tool to do so. It takes a few minutes to walk around and flip the wiper out. On ours when the bedroom slide was extended water would leak in around the bottom. We have those little rain gutters at the bottom of the slide. The gutter had detached from the side of the slide allowing water running down the slide, behind the wiper gasket to collect at the bottom corner of the slide and thus leak inside the camper. I removed the old glue, cleaned the area up and reattached the gutter with RTV. Not had a problem since. Check yours out and see if you have the same thing. After reading this post I think I will check my AC bolts.

With our trucks and the camper we have experienced the same thing with new tires. My opinion but I think the rubber is (for a lack of a better term) more sticky when bran new. After a few thousand miles they work just fine.

I think I read the shop reported the generator was shorted. That being said there are not a lot of options. I think $4400 is high I would shop around and see what others say about the generator. Maybe it not shorted at all (miss diagnosis happens all the time). If it turns out to be shorted check it out. Sometimes and not very often the short is external to the windings and can be repaired. Like someone else has stated, set her up in a full hookup campground and just forget the generator. FYI I did purchase a used generator 7kw off e-bay a few years ago for $800.

I went through the same issue about a year ago. I got away from the high priced RV tires and went with a Toyo truck tire. The tire number is a little different but the tire is the same diameter and just a little bit wider for less than 1/2 the price of an RV tire. They are e-balance tires so they continuously compensate for imbalances. In any case I used Miller Bros Giant Tire Service (11430 CAMP MINE ROAD BROOKSVILLE, FL 34601 (352) 797-9205). Buying tires from them was like a NASCAR pit stop. Before I could get out of the coach the back of the coach was off the ground. Less than 30 minutes they were done. It took longer to pay then change the tires. I drove about 60 miles to get there. While talking to the tire tech I found out they make house calls. For nominally $80 they would have come to my house to change the tires. Had I know that I would have gladly paid them the $80. P.S. The tires have been great. After the initial wear-in (where all new tires are a little sticky to the road) the coach handles and rides like a dream. No vibrations at any speed.

Just thought I would follow up on what I did. It was easy, I took the motor home to Cummins South Ocala. They estimated $250 to do the job if there was not any problems with the temp sensor the price would increase. They had the job finished in about 2 hours the bill was $189. Saved me a day of dinking around. For some things you just have to call or see the man.

I had the same problem with our Monaco. The next day I went to Home depot and purchased a wet/dry vac to remove the water inside. Outside I pulled back the wiper gasket and could see water running down the side of the slide (Normal think). At the very bottom of the slide there is a gutter system. This gutter system had lost adhesion to the side of the slide allowing the water to run down behind the gutter and pool at the bottom of the slide. Somewhere down there it found a way inside the coach. It looked like the gutter was sealed with RTV so I resealed it with the same stuff. The trick was removing the old RTV and applying the new RTV inside that small space. I used very long and small nosed pliers to remove the old stuff. Cleaned with alcohol and using a syringe (purchased from farm store) filled with RTV I reached inside that small space and reapplied the RTV. That was two years ago and it has not leaked since. Found all four slide's were in need of repair.

Have an Idea I wanted to run by everyone. I was talking about replacing connecting rods and pistons prior to having a problem but if I were to perform oil samples would I be able to see increased levels of wrist pin busing material and or other materials early enough to take action prior to engine failure? If levels started going up I could perform preventive repairs before it became a real problem.

MarcW, Good question regarding how Cummins handled it with engines out of the extended 5yr/100mile warranty. Mine is out of warranty this month (coach was not sold until 2008).

FIRE UP I am slow but I think I got it. You applied a lot of torque I am assuming by hand? Wonder if a impact wrench would give better results? Heating the housing using a propane torch; just a few hundred degrees to soften whatever is binding the threads or was it much hotter to make the housing to expand? Thanks for the help.

roundown8366 thanks for the input. My SN is within about 3K of yours. Hope we get more data. Monday I will call Cummins in Jacksonville to see if they will give me information. So far you and Hjudge49 are the only two I know of that had failures but we all know there are more and I think I read there were nominally 2100 engines at risk. I don't understand that based on the serial number range but for now I will accept. Macktee if you are referring to my post, I was just stating things don't break sitting at home not being used. So by default it will break away from home. My opinion, run till she blows and we will do something about it then. It will just cost a little bit more but then it's only money.

Cummins ISO 400 C0713 (wrist pin Campaign)

My engine is included in the Cummins C0713 campaign regarding the wrest pin issue. The campaign was performed on my engine. They install a crankcase sensor to since blow-by of a piston that is about to fail. My serial number is smack in the middle of the range from 46543077 to 46603939. When I purchased the motorhome I realized the issue but my research then suggested there were not many failures and if the engine made it past nominally 1000 miles it was good to go. None of the Cummins shops I checked with had ever see one. Additionally I purchased a multiyear ESP so I was not too concerned. While camping in Feb I met a man who had one blow at nominally 19000 miles. I have since found another person who at nominally 14000 miles had one blow. That started me thinking about it a little. At home I could buy a long block and swap it out for under $10K but you are most likely not going to be at home if it fails. From what I here, to have someone replace the engine the cost doubles ($20K). My thoughts are if we knew the serial number distribution of the recorded failures one could make an assessment of their risk. My thoughts are if I am high risk then before the engine fails drop the engine, remove the head and oil pan, push each piston out and replace the connecting rod or wrist pin or both whatever needs to be done. That cost would be only a few $K if done at home versus a complete rebuild with a sleeve if the sensor identifies blow-by or worst case a new engine. So I called Cummins yesterday, what a runaround. I always thought very highly of them until yesterday. The person would only say the campaign was performed and your engine is ok to use. When I pushed the issue regarding known failures she told me to call a dealer. I told her the dealer would only know what went through their shop, they most likely don't have access to national data. I would have had better luck talking to a rock. So I thought I would post here and see if there are any forum members who have or know anyone who has experienced a failure due to this issue and if they would provide serial number/mileage (when failed) feedback, I would post the statics as I receive updates. Looks like if the sensor comes out life is good but if not it's another story. The photos show the thermostat housing, it looks like it is part of the water pump. So I am assuming worst case you must replace that assembly or maybe remove and install helicoil? Reading through the Onan manual I see every so often we are to clean out the muffler. Never done that, looks like you just pull the plug, start it up and run at full load for about 5 minutes. More stuff to do.
