RE: over on RAWR occassionally

Remember- the ratings are based on continuous use.
IMO- 400 pounds is no big deal. Other than keeping good tries on the truck and religiously checking the tire pressure before each haul (which should always be done anyhow)I would not give it a second thought- just run it.
You might want some airbags which will do nothing to the ratings of your truck but may enhance ride comfort when loaded-
For comparisons sake- My last truck logged tens of thousands of miles while 2k over the pin weight and 8k over the gcwr. Got 38k for that truck when I traded it in-
That truck ran just as good when I traded in as it did when I bought it.

RE: Be Safe Out There - Roll over in AZ

That is a wicked pull up or down from Phoenix to Prescott.
The reality is that an incident like that could happen to any of us- The guy driving that rig could have been well within all of his weights/specs etc. He could also be the very best driver in the world and saved lives because he kept it on the road etc.
When I see this stuff I am always just glad it was not me.

RE: Ford and GMC to produce new 9 and 10 speed transmissions

I would rather see a two speed rear end.
It would be nice to select between a loaded and unloaded rear gear!

RE: Planning to Toy Haul Full Time - Looking for Advice

If you are planing on traveling much with any combination the real limiting factor will be the frame, the stiffer the frame the less flex when towing and the longer the interior will stay together. Many of the very high end units have double or triple box frame construction which is both expensive and heavy but stiff enough to allow for long term towing with minimum damage resulting from it. Most mid-range units have I-beam frames of differing dimensions and some are designed to be light enough to be towed by smaller tow vehicles.
For a ten year duration I would think that buying a mid-range unit and planing on replacing it after five years if necessary would be a wash with buying a very high end unit and keeping it for the ten years. Also changing at five years would keep all of your systems (heating, cooling, refer, etc) relatively new and also allow for a change of floor plans to accommodate changes in lifestyle.
Happy Camping
Great points- I agree 100%
If all you are taking is a motorcycle consider a living quarters horse trailer. It will absolutely hold up to the rigors of 10 years of full timing regardless of where you take it. The craftsmanship is a whole lot better in every way.

RE: Sandrail and quad in a toy hauler

Bigger TH or a Moho and a trailer-
I just don't see a mass produced TH standing up to the type of thing you are trying to do.

RE: Planning to Toy Haul Full Time - Looking for Advice

Call me crazy but I don't think any mass produced unit is going to stand up to the rigor of 10 years of full-time use- IMO 5 years of full-timing would be pushing it big time no matter how careful and proactive you are with regards to upkeep.
Its the towing that kills these things. Ten years is doable if you buy the unit and set it permanently in one place that does not get too hot or too cold- even better if you build a structure over it. But if you are going to do any substantial towing- The walls are going to fall off long before you get to ten years.
This is in no way scientific but I figure 1 mile of trailer towing equates to 5 miles for the truck. So a mass produced TH with 100,000 miles would be the same as driving a pickup with 500,000 miles.
With the above in mind I think you have to plan on buying much higher end than a Voltage or other like unit or be prepared to buy another unit in 4-5 years depending on how/where you tow. A trip to Alaska is going to severely shorten the lifespan of a heavy, multi-slide, mass produced TH.

RE: In search of top 5 quality/durable toy haulers, 14+ Garage

You need a custom unit for sure- depending on your price range you can get a unit with as many bells and whistles as you want. I would start with Featherlight for an idea on price, options, ideas etc...

RE: Planning to Toy Haul Full Time - Looking for Advice

10 years of full-timing in a TH-
You need to buy a New Horizons or other very high end unit. The rest of them just are not going to stand up to the use- unless you haul your unit very little which IMO is the hardest thing on them.

Can't speak to using the Companion in a short bed but I have had my B&W in 4 different trucks over the last 8 years and have tens of thousands of towing miles on it. It has been flawless.

RE: TOWING THIS ?

That is a lot of weight for a 5.3 motor with the 3.42 rear end- especially in the mountains. Since you already have the truck I would try it and then decide if a bigger truck is needed.
PS- If you buy a 3/4 ton diesel you will quickly decide you "needed" it. There is just nothing like climbing grades with a load behind your diesel truck. It really does make the driving fun!

RE: Help me pick my new tow vehicle - SUV

From a safety standpoint one of the new 1/2 ton pickups will have more than enough power, brakes, suspension etc. to safely haul the load. It will also get better mileage as a daily driver and be just as comfortable as an SUV from a ride standpoint.
We own a suburban and have owned several suburbans and tahoes- both are really average tow vehicles no matter how you set them up. However, both will certainly get the job done for what you describe.
If it were me- I would use a sub or tahoe if I already owned one. If I was buying I would definitely get something else.

RE: Help me pick my new tow vehicle - SUV

I think a Tahoe is enough "truck" to haul 5500 pounds- you may need some airbags to help the rear sag when hitched. (maybe the Tahoe's are going to get updated like the new pickups and will have increased towing capability?)
That said- one of the newer 1/2 ton pickups would be the best way to go from a safety standpoint as well as daily driver comfort.

RE: LML 3500HD Dually - Nor-Cal Nick’s Hauler Project

I will be interested to see the 35"'s on there- I am not sure I can fit 35" tires without some cutting in front.
If it works I am all over 35's as soon as I need new tires.
I can't show you 35"s, you will give away all my secrets to the monster truck driver HAHAHAHA!!
Just giving you $%#t. But yes this will have 35"s, just like my previous because I feel it's the best all around combo hands down.
Never asked him about 35's- but if you are saying they fit than I am sure they do. I did not turn up the keys at all after doing the 4"Cognito kit...
At any rate- looking forward to seeing what you do.
