RE: snowbirding in Florida

try using wwww.Allstays.com as a search engine. Don't overlook county and state forest campgrounds. Often they DON'T take reservations AND have modest prices. We've enjoyed the panhandle (forgotten coast) and the west coast a lot. Much to choose from. Enjoy it.

RE: Modifying light fixtures

Use any 120V fixture that you like and get a 12 V LED bulb with an edison base. I did this for a wall fixture.

RE: SUMMER ROADTRIP

On our around the USA trip, two of the most amazing things were the Columbia River Gorge and the Grand Coulee (not the dam). The list of really good stops is VERY long. Passport America is a good deal for such a trip as most stays are 1 - 2 nights which falls under most of the campground discount rules. I want to do it again. Enjoy.

RE: 5th wheel landing gear motor needs more oomph.

The heavy draw comes from the batteries. Unless they are in top shape, you are taxing the charging circuit! Found that out while the batteries were out (while replacing them) and the slides crept in at a snail's pace.

RE: trip ok? or wouldnot risk it?

When the temps get around the low 20's for extended time, you MUST run the furnace and not rely on small electric space heaters ONLY. The furnace (in our 3-seasons rig) puts heat into the undercarriage. Without the furnace heating the undercarriage, lines will freeze. Why do I know that? Outside hose connections are most apt to freeze in low temps. X2 on RoyF's comment.

RE: interior led lights

Replaced a 12 V lamp whose output was just so-so (and DW thought was ugly) with a standard 120V wall lamp and used a 12V LED Bulb with an Edison base. Works great.

RE: 5th wheel suspension upgrades?

I installed a Dexter EZ-Flex system (with wet bolts). I added new shocks at the same time. Installation was a little difficult (getting the new wet bolts in) but the results were GREAT. Our rear kitchen keeps better order and the kitchen chairs no longer bounce about during travel. The old shackles were close to total failure and their neoprene sleeves all but gone. We do 3-4K mi/yr so it was important.

RE: Heat system improvements

When replacing the carpet in the main area, the steps to the bedroom were removed. We found the flexible heating duct there CRUSHED BY THE FACTORY. Replacing even short parts of the flexible duct work with smooth aluminum pieces (using the aluminum tape mentioned before) increases the flow considerably.

RE: Newbie with questions about freezing up?

Be sure to put rv antifreeze in the sink drain traps. It can be problematical; and why do I know that!

RE: Installed my E-Z flex kit today

Yours looks just like mine looked. A couple of shackle holes would accommodate my little finger, others my thumb with room to spare! So glad I did the repair AND the rear kitchen model rides MUCH smoother for the conversion. Can't recommend the conversion more strongly.

RE: 5th wheel furnace issues

When the gas in the tanks is low, but not gone, there is insufficient pressure for the furnace. Stove will come on, but not the furnace. Just something else to check.

RE: Found the best way to jack the fifth wheel for bearing check

Got the long jack at Northern Tool: http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_19798_19798 It is one whose minimum height is 19 3/8". Saw many less expensive but as someone pointed out, would not work if there were a flat tire!

Found the best way to jack the fifth wheel for bearing check

I got tired - and a bit scared - of making a pyramid of 4x4's and using a bottle jack to lift the fifth wheel when pulling the wheels to repack the bearings and checking the brakes. Got a long jack. Nice. http://i843.photobucket.com/albums/zz360/garlicgarden/RV%20pix/Longjack.jpg

Hose hangers and water filtration

In the front storage under the bedroom in our 5th, I used a small piece of plywood and wood screw to afix some Velcro to hold up the Water hoses. The pictures are of two water hoses. I did the same for the black water flush hose and coax TV cables. We don't stay at one place a lot and I tired of connecting/disconnecting the whole house filter. I added a water softener and put the two under the sink using their wrenches as templates for the hole to set them into. While I was there, I added an accumulator. Here are the links to photobucket - now how do I get the pictures in here? Got it - maybe http://i843.photobucket.com/albums/zz360/garlicgarden/RV%20pix/Velcrohosehanger.jpg http://i843.photobucket.com/albums/zz360/garlicgarden/RV%20pix/IMGP0005.jpg width=640 http://i843.photobucket.com/albums/zz360/garlicgarden/RV%20pix/Hanginghose.jpg http://i843.photobucket.com/albums/zz360/garlicgarden/RV%20pix/Underthesink.jpg http://i843.photobucket.com/albums/zz360/garlicgarden/RV%20pix/waterfilters.jpg Moderator edit to re-size picture to forum limit of 640px maximum width.

RE: Grease on Brakes

X2 on RCMAN46. Replacing the entire unit with pads and magnets is quite easy in relatively inexpensive, about $50+ a wheel. Do it.

RE: Running heater in 5th wheel

It all depends on the temperature and what you are carrying and for how long. We leave New England in early Dec and it can be quite cold until we get to NC, SC or GA. Our water lines have been blown out; we carry no water in the holding tank using jugs for washing/flushing at stops (we motel it until the weather is more conducive to "camping"). When the temps get below 20-25 F, water lines will start to freeze after 4-5 hours, less if you are on the road (and why do I know this). To keep the undercarriage lines from freezing, the furnace is NECESSARY as there are hot air ducts exiting under there. With little water in the grey & black water tanks, we do not worry about them freezing as there is plenty of expansion room. For a quick lunch or supper stop, the furnace will heat up the area quickly enough and we do not keep in on while on the road.

RE: Laser vs. ink-jet for on the road

Went with an ink jet (HP) printer/flat bed scanner/copier. No problem with drying ink. Copier/scanner property is handy for bills & records. We keep it in its original shipping box (with Styrofoam packing) in the 5th wheel's basement 99% of the time and have had no problems. ALL ink will eventually dry. With Ink jet, a wet tissue over the jets is messy but works wonders.

RE: Tire Wear

X2 on Skipnchar. Also check tire pressure. Another thing: were the tires ever balanced? Rigs are set up to go from home to camp and back, not for extensive travel. Check shackles for wear & tear, air pressure, tire balance and shocks. Many axles have pins that fit into springs so alignment adjustments are impossible. Check the shackles. Check the shackles. Check the shackles. After following that advice, I found mine on the verge of catastrophic failure.

RE: Air compressor for tires

Said NAY to a 12V because it takes too long to fill up to 80 psi. Bought a small 120 V unit and an inverter (or is it a converter). Probably won't use it much now that the rotten valve stems (and tires) have been replaced. Works well to blow out the water lines for winter!
