RE: restoring my 72 coachman

My stock answer for “where can I find….” Is to latch on to a copy of Hemmings Motor News, the old car hobbies classified bible. There are many companies that supply parts for old cars, trucks, and now RV’s and you will find them in Hemmings. www.hemmings.com Brad

RE: Driving miles or time in a day?

My distance per day driving has had more to due with my age than anything else. 50 years ago when I was in my mid twenties 700 miles per day was a normal days drive. That was in a pickup with camping gear loaded in the back. Two of us used to do Boston to Daytona for the race in one shot, 1400 miles/ Now at age 75 225 miles per day in a 38 foot DP towing a car trailer is the limit. The number of miles covered is as personal as the choice between a hamburger and a cheeseburger. But the ultimate consideration is safety. Brad

RE: Was this the right RV

Welcome to RV land. We have RV'd for years in used rigs. Currently we are running a 20 year old Foretravel that had been meticulously cared for before we purchased it. The previous owner also eat the biggest part of the depreciation. Our previous rig was a 33' Southwind and we realy enjoyed it. If it pleases you it is the right rig. Have a ball!

RE: Attaching Wires to RV Roof

This last summer I installed a booster kit for my cell phone and Verizon internet wireless card. The direction said that the interior booster needed to be 20 feet from the antenea. On out 38' coach I mounted the antenea on the rear of the luggage rack and the amplifyer inside the front overhead cabinet. To get the antenea wire from the front to the back I used grey PCV conduit and fittings on the roof and routed it so that I could take advantage of screws already drilled though the roof for the roof vents, shower skylight, A/C units, and front mounted spot light. I used a large enough conduit so that I had room for other wires if I should need to run them. My solar wiring is also routed through the same conduit. I then used plenty of calking to hold back water leaks. It worked well. Brad

RE: Towing a Vehicle

We also have dragged a car along behind us using all the methods cited above, and I am most comfortable with a 4 wheel car trailer with 4 wheel electric brakes. An open car trailer is no more expensive than a good tow bar with braking system. The car trailer can be backed up and has the advantage of not putting a great amount of stress on the towed vehicles suspension and front end steering components. All of the differental parts are in motion as well as the drive shafts, universal joints, wheel brearings, and transmission output shafts. The car trailer is a little more work loading and unloading than hooking up a tow bar but about the same as the tow dolly. There is one small safety item when using a car trailer is that it is equiped with ICC side marker lights that lets a drive coming out of a side street at night that there is a long vehicle. A car in tow does not have this advantage, just a small point. One thing that I like about a car trailer is that as a retired auto shop teacher I feel naked without my tools and with the trailer I have a tool box mounted filled with tools for all the tinkering that I want to do for the 6 months every year that we are on the road. We are in Key West (Sunshine Key RV Resort) And I just finished rebuilding my fishing reels. The car trailer is stored beside the MH on the site.

RE: Headwinds and mileage

The side wind blowing on that big side of the coach acts like a wind on a sail and causes the need for cranking in steering offset to keep the rig going straight. The wind also blowing over the roof will create a vacuum on the other side of the coach increasing the side force and also increasing the need for steering offset. Thus you have pleanty of tire scrub. Brad

RE: 1993 Pace Arrow Diesel Pusher

We run an older Foretravel with the Oshkosh chassis. We pul a 12,000 pound GVW trailer. I taught auto technology in both secondary and post secondary settings and did a bit of redesign and rebuilding on the rig to make it stronger. Remember that the laws that require recert and only the origonal maker doing the redesign are for commercial application. That said does not mean that I approve Mickey Mouse modifications, I do not. There are ways to increase the load carrying capability and be perfectly safe.

RE: Thinking of selling my coach...Am I stupid?

We half time in a paid for 1990 Foretravel with no slides. The few dollars that I spend each moth on tinkering stuff is far less than just the intrest on a newer coach. Lucy and I and the two cats get along just fine in the n o slide rig. It is only my opinion but slides mainly only ad square footage to the center isle and a bit more walk around space in the bed room. Of course I'm a cheep yankee and have the phylosophy that interst only flows one way, into my bank account not out.

RE: atwood DSI water heater wont light elec or gas

We have an older rig and have been plagued for several years by an intermittent no light problem that was happening more and more often, almost Dailey. The other day I pulled all the spade connectors apart and cleaned each one till it and its matching connector until bright and shinny. Then I used a silicon dielectric to coat the terminals and reconnected them. I also cleaned the point where the burner tube connects to the housing until it was bright and shinny. That was a week ago and so far so good. Brad

RE: Inverter use.

The real answer is "it depends". The depends is what amperage will the alternator on your rig put out? Your owners book should list the amperage of the factory installed alternator. Then figure that the running gear of the rig will probably consume 20 or so amps running down the road without the headlights or daytime running lights and you should keep the total amp draw at about 75% of the alternators rating for continuos operation. I like to run the refer on electric rather than gas when driving and as a result beefed up the alternator system. It was a single 125 amp alternator and now I have two 125 alternators on the engine. I am not a speed demon left lane driver so I do not notice the extra load on my 275 HP Detroit Diesel. Brad

RE: Definition of "under inflated".

The pressure listed on the side wall is a guide for max pressure at a specified load. A tire is underinflated when there is inssuficient air pressure in the tire to hold the entire tread surface in contact with the road. When underinflated the center of the tread will push up leaving the outside edges of the tire to carry more load. An underinflated tire will wear the two outside edges off the tire and still hav e tread in the center. Over inflation is when the center of the tread carries more weight doue to bulging out than the edges. That said there is no one answer for under inflation. it is a combination of the weight on the wheel and the air pressure iside the tire. The tire makers chart adn weighing the coach is the closest to answering the question. Brad

RE: F53 460 Ford V8

It is really simple. Gasoline when burned produces about 125,000 BTU’s per gallon. When you increase speed you are burning more gallons per hour developing more heat. As the radiator ages it develops a crud in the tubes restricting the flow of coolant. This stuff cannot be flushed out. So as you increase speed the system cannot get rid of the heat fast enough and up goes the temperature.

RE: What did you do to your Class A MH today???

The class A was ok but had to replace a transmission cooler line on the Subaru. That was a project.

RE: 1985 Holiday Rambler-Too Old?

I am a bit odd I guess in the fact that I like old. Our coach is a 1990 Foretravel and the fact that it is 20 years old does not limit the distances and pleasure that we get from the old beast. And no, I did not buy it new, only three years and 40,000 miles ago. Yes there is tinkering to do on it a lot of the time, but we only have about 11% of the new purchase price and yet drive a luxury coach. I paid more than most commenting on this forum would advise for an old coach but the condition warranted the price. I am a retired Auto Shop Instructor so I like to tinker. When considering price use the scale of what is it's value to me rather than what someone else says that it should be worth. Remember it is not an investment, it is something to use. In the three years that I have owned it we have installed solar with a big battery pack and a ginourmus inverter/converter/charger. Then redo the interior lighting with a combination of LED and compact florecsent, and upgrade the engines alternator. Still keeping in the 11% of the price of the coach when new. Ols is not for everyone but not to be avoided either. Oh, we live in it 6 months out of the year chasing warm weather and then return to the stick house in rural New Hampshire for the spring and summer. Brad, Lucy, and Earl and Max the kitty kats.

RE: CAMPING V. TOURISM

We are tourists who travel in a big RV and use campgrounds. part of my career was spent traveling the world, living out of a suit case, and schleping though airport after airport. And with a walking disability that was a real pain in the ---. I love to travel. I love warm weather in the winter and our country home in New Hampshire in the summer. We have traveled all over the US being mobile 6 months out of the year. As I write this we are in the mountains just outside of Ashville North Carolina heading to Florida. This year we decided to take a month to get from New Hampshire to Florida, so we use campgrounds as waypoints to stop and use the toad to explore the local that we are in. Now we drive our home, and stop where we please, put down roots for a bit, and then move on. We call it RVing. Brad, Lucy, and the two kitty kats Earl and Max.

In the Lake Sunapee area the trees started turned very early and it was a slow change to beyond peak as of today. The weather has been crappy with rain washing the trees near bare. New Hampshire Geezer

Thanks Rich for the info. Will be driving that route tomorrow. We used to drive it all the time in the 70's and 80's when it was refered to as the Ho Chi Min Trail. Geezer34nh

Rt 209 From Milford Pa South

Does anyone know is you can haul a car trailer behind a MH down 209 from Milford Pa South? I know that it is closed to commercial traffic, but does it ban car trailers? Geezer34nh
