RE: atwood DSI water heater wont light elec or gas

We have an older rig and have been plagued for several years by an intermittent no light problem that was happening more and more often, almost Dailey. The other day I pulled all the spade connectors apart and cleaned each one till it and its matching connector until bright and shinny. Then I used a silicon dielectric to coat the terminals and reconnected them. I also cleaned the point where the burner tube connects to the housing until it was bright and shinny. That was a week ago and so far so good. Brad

RE: Inverter use.

The real answer is "it depends". The depends is what amperage will the alternator on your rig put out? Your owners book should list the amperage of the factory installed alternator. Then figure that the running gear of the rig will probably consume 20 or so amps running down the road without the headlights or daytime running lights and you should keep the total amp draw at about 75% of the alternators rating for continuos operation. I like to run the refer on electric rather than gas when driving and as a result beefed up the alternator system. It was a single 125 amp alternator and now I have two 125 alternators on the engine. I am not a speed demon left lane driver so I do not notice the extra load on my 275 HP Detroit Diesel. Brad

RE: Definition of "under inflated".

The pressure listed on the side wall is a guide for max pressure at a specified load. A tire is underinflated when there is inssuficient air pressure in the tire to hold the entire tread surface in contact with the road. When underinflated the center of the tread will push up leaving the outside edges of the tire to carry more load. An underinflated tire will wear the two outside edges off the tire and still hav e tread in the center. Over inflation is when the center of the tread carries more weight doue to bulging out than the edges. That said there is no one answer for under inflation. it is a combination of the weight on the wheel and the air pressure iside the tire. The tire makers chart adn weighing the coach is the closest to answering the question. Brad

RE: F53 460 Ford V8

It is really simple. Gasoline when burned produces about 125,000 BTU’s per gallon. When you increase speed you are burning more gallons per hour developing more heat. As the radiator ages it develops a crud in the tubes restricting the flow of coolant. This stuff cannot be flushed out. So as you increase speed the system cannot get rid of the heat fast enough and up goes the temperature.

RE: What did you do to your Class A MH today???

The class A was ok but had to replace a transmission cooler line on the Subaru. That was a project.

RE: 1985 Holiday Rambler-Too Old?

I am a bit odd I guess in the fact that I like old. Our coach is a 1990 Foretravel and the fact that it is 20 years old does not limit the distances and pleasure that we get from the old beast. And no, I did not buy it new, only three years and 40,000 miles ago. Yes there is tinkering to do on it a lot of the time, but we only have about 11% of the new purchase price and yet drive a luxury coach. I paid more than most commenting on this forum would advise for an old coach but the condition warranted the price. I am a retired Auto Shop Instructor so I like to tinker. When considering price use the scale of what is it's value to me rather than what someone else says that it should be worth. Remember it is not an investment, it is something to use. In the three years that I have owned it we have installed solar with a big battery pack and a ginourmus inverter/converter/charger. Then redo the interior lighting with a combination of LED and compact florecsent, and upgrade the engines alternator. Still keeping in the 11% of the price of the coach when new. Ols is not for everyone but not to be avoided either. Oh, we live in it 6 months out of the year chasing warm weather and then return to the stick house in rural New Hampshire for the spring and summer. Brad, Lucy, and Earl and Max the kitty kats.

RE: CAMPING V. TOURISM

We are tourists who travel in a big RV and use campgrounds. part of my career was spent traveling the world, living out of a suit case, and schleping though airport after airport. And with a walking disability that was a real pain in the ---. I love to travel. I love warm weather in the winter and our country home in New Hampshire in the summer. We have traveled all over the US being mobile 6 months out of the year. As I write this we are in the mountains just outside of Ashville North Carolina heading to Florida. This year we decided to take a month to get from New Hampshire to Florida, so we use campgrounds as waypoints to stop and use the toad to explore the local that we are in. Now we drive our home, and stop where we please, put down roots for a bit, and then move on. We call it RVing. Brad, Lucy, and the two kitty kats Earl and Max.

RE: Help finding New England Fall Color

In the Lake Sunapee area the trees started turned very early and it was a slow change to beyond peak as of today. The weather has been crappy with rain washing the trees near bare. New Hampshire Geezer

RE: Rt 209 From Milford Pa South

Thanks Rich for the info. Will be driving that route tomorrow. We used to drive it all the time in the 70's and 80's when it was refered to as the Ho Chi Min Trail. Geezer34nh

Rt 209 From Milford Pa South

Does anyone know is you can haul a car trailer behind a MH down 209 from Milford Pa South? I know that it is closed to commercial traffic, but does it ban car trailers? Geezer34nh

RE: weres everybody at?

Sitting at my desk in our old, 1840's vintage, farm house getting ready to load the Subaru on the car trailer this afternoon. Finished the 1,000 little projects on the MH during the summer like converting most of the 12 volt lighting to LED's, remounting the stereo sound system and satellite receiver, and more stuff, all needed to keep a 20 year old MH in good condition. Tomorrow is wheels up and off for warm climates, probably Florida this winter. Will take about a month to get to Florida driving down the Blue Ridge to Ashville NC then Georgia and finally Florida. Visiting friends and family along the way. We are leaving New Hampshire at the end of the great colorful leaf peeping season and will be back here after mud season when our dirt road dries out, 6 months from now. We spent last winter in southern California and the Arizona desert. So today here in New Hampshire, tomorrow, who knows? Brad & Lucy, and of course Earl and Max the kitty kats.

RE: Has anyone bought their Class A using Ebay?

I sell vintage auto parts and books on E Bay and two years ago purchased latest RV on E bay. The buyer needs to take precautions like make sure that there are no red flag words in the offer to sell dealing with the title and condition. If the vehicle is a big bucks unit then a quick trip to look at the rig or hire an independent to look at it, and withhold the final payment to be made on delivery if everything is ok. So far the coach has been everything and more than the seller said it was.

RE: WHAT IS THIS !! Drain plug missing on bottom of motor

Well it is a little more than an access hole. In the case where the transmission would be used in hostile environment like fording deep water, a plug would be used to keep water out. the hole is left uncovered in hostile use to vent the flywheel housing incase of leaks and as an access hole. So, unless you plan on off general and deep water fording, leave it uncovered. Brad

RE: Why is RVing so great?

We have RV'd for more than 40 years. And I know both worlds as I spent a lot of my professional life running from city to city, hotel to hotel, airplane to taxi, and so on. The term "my own bed" is just the tip of the meaning of that expression. First I find that storing the lawn furnature, rolling up the awing, disonnecting the power, water and sewer to move, loading the Subaru on the car trailer once every couple of weeks is more enjoyable that shoveling snow, caring for the yard in summers heat, paining the house and barn, and other stich house chores. In the MH we have our books, computers, entertainment systems, food and food preperation equipment, and clothes. After traveling 30 + years for business I do not miss dragging a suitcase around, packing and unpacking clothes every night, and doubious over priced hotel food. But that is me and to each his own. I have seen and experienced both and now in semi retirement prefer the RV. Plus the great memories of the kids growing up traveling with us, and the beautiful places that we have been. My favorite you ask? The drive down the Pacific Coast Highway from seattle to San Diego. The big windshield in the MH was our own private I Max Theater.

RE: Question about Yellowstone NP

last August we pulled into Fishing Bridge CG without reservations at 3:30 in the afternoon and there was still room and spaces available. Our old Foretravel is 38 feet and we squeezed into one of their sites and still had room for the toad.

RE: How far do you like to drive in a day?

There was a time when it was a straight though drive from New Hampshire to Daytona, about 1400 miles. But now 40 years later my days drive is closer to 250 miles.

RE: Walmart Overnight Parking

We stay in Wal Marts a lot when travelling between destinations. Out rule is to call ahead about mid afternoon and ask if their store is one that allows RV's overnight. Then we check with the customer service desk when we pull in and make sure we are parked where they would suggest. We have been treated with the utmost courtesy 99.9% of the time and a lot of other companies could benifit from Wal Marts employee training. A principle is that the customer is to be valued. We have had securety people suggest that we might be more comfortable parking in a different part of the lot away from the delivery truck traffic. From being offered use of electricity if we parked near the auto service. That night Wal Mart benifited as we unloaded the Subaru off the trailer and had the oil and filter changed and bought two tires. Wal mart believes that the name of the game is customer loyalty. During the 1980's when I was working for a famous oil filter company doing the "Pay Me Now or Pay Me Later" commercials and personal appearances I was hired by Wal Mart to provide auto care clinics at the Wal Mart annual managers meetings in Little Rock. Sam Walton, whom I got to know a bit, was truely a customer oriented people oriented individual. Brad

RE: car rentals

I have been renting from Enterprise both when RVing and for business purposes when home. I am an expert witness/consultant and find it has been less expensive in the long run to rent a new car from Enterprise than putting excessive mileage on my own car, especially when the client was paying. However my local Enterprise, not an airport location, has alomost doubles the rates in the past year. A Toyota Corrolla cost almost $100.00 per day here in New Hampshire. The airport locations are less money. However, checking the prices this morning I noticed that the rates have come down and a Corrolla is now under $60.00 a day. So, check the prices before you decide to travel without the toad or not. In this market and economy there are strange things happening to prices on everything out there. Brad

RE: Batteries and charging - or not

The first thing that I do when checking a problem with the electrical system is to do a complete load test on the batteries including a 3 minute charge test to check for sulfation. Remember that most batteries in an RV are a year old before the house is built on the chassis. The company building the house purchases the chassis from a factory pool where the chassis has sat waiting for a buyer. then it sits in the builders pool waiting for its turn on the assembly floor. During this time the batteries may suffer the effects of sulfation from sitting and loose some or all of their capacity. If a technician starts testing items before testing the battery he is starting in the middle of the project. Brad
