Washington route 203 to Mt Rainier

We want to get from Bellington to Mt Rainier and would love to bypass Seattle and I5. We are thinking of taking exit l94 (Route 2) to Monroe and then south on 203 to Fall City, Maple Valley, Enumclaw and then 410 to Mt Rainier. Is this a good route for a RV? How is the road? Love to get some suggestions.

RE: Base Camp for Touring Vancouver

If you can get a pull thru at Peace Arch RV Park, the spots are quite nice and give you privacy between rows of trees -- about l/2 hour drive (traffic depending) to Vancouver or you can take the bus. Lovely areas around White Rock to explore too -- take a stroll one night on White Rock Beach or Crescent Beach and go for a walk in Sunnyside Acres (urban forest)(about 5 mins from park.) This park is not as close as Capilano but you avoid all Vancouver traffic. Immediately off freeway as you come up the I - 5 from Washington -- about 10 mins into Canada.

Matane - Baie Comeau Quebec Ferry

We want to do this crossing in late Sept or early Oct -- we see it runs only once per day and we wondered if reservations are a must. We will just have a car, no RV. And if the answer is yes, how early would you have to make it -- 24 to 48 hours be okay?

RE: Campgrounds in Port Hardy?

Actually we disagree with the previous comments re Port Hardy -- we think it is definitely worth going up to see at least once. Almost always see a bear along the road on the way up. Quatse River runs past Sunny Sanctuary Campground and inland to the Quatse River Campground (which is quite nice between the trees) -- along that way is a great scenic walking path. If you hit it right, the river in that area has good salmon fishing and is always fun to try your luck and so close to the campground. Vegetation is beautiful and makes for a nice one or two days to just relax. You do have to be careful and watch for fresh bear dung in the area but we have never had a problem. Salmon hatchery by Quatse River Campground is very interesting. I definitely think the area deserves a few days. And great for eagle watching. If that is the sort of thing you enjoy, you will not be disappointed.

RE: Campgrounds in Port Hardy?

We were at Sunny Sanctuary 2 weeks ago -- they are trying to clean it up and it wasn't bad. We drove out of there 2 years ago as it was so run down but this time we did stay and owner was good in ensuring we were satisfied. But still cable problems if that is a concern. If you do not have to be directly in Port Hardy, we recommend Telegraph Cove Marina and RV Park (www.telegraphcove.ca) -- about 40 mins from Port Hardy just east of Port McNeil. Beautiful location, walk into Telegraph Cove for sightseeing, restaurants, etc.

RE: Quebec City area

Thanks for that excellent advise -- have always wanted to do the Gaspe. Time wise: is it realistic to do Quebec City to Baie Comeau in one day? Then taking the ferry, make it to Gaspe the next day? That would then give us 3 more nights to wander back to Quebec City?

Quebec City area

Not an RV question but I have gotten so much good advise from this site that it is the first place I think of trying! We are leaving the RV at home this fall and flying to Quebec City. Will spend about 3 days enjoying Quebec City and then want to rent a car and see some of the countryside. Any suggestions? We thought of heading north on l75 to Chicoutimi and then west to the Saquenay and then perhaps come back to Quebec on l38? We want to leave Montreal and Mont Tremblant for another trip. Not counting our time in Quebec City, we will have about 5 days with a rental car before we have to return to Quebec City. Any small towns, hidden gems, great ideas -- love to have them! I thought of driving the Gaspe but that may be too ambitious for 5 days.

RE: Travel thru Vancouver,BC

You are not saying where you want to go on Vancouver Island but here is definitely another vote for Tswassawan -- we live near the border that you are coming thru and the only reason you would go via Horseshoe Bay is to get a few glimpses of the city -- beautiful views I admit but with eyes glued to the traffic, it is hardly worth the stress. Another nice thing about the Tswassawan - Duke Point route to Nanaimo, is you come in south of Nanaimo and are already on the main highway and avoid the city there.

RE: VANCOUVER ISLAND

Prices: approximately (did not write down and memory not perfect!)
Rathtrevor (Provincial Campground) - ? $24
Salmon Point - about $32 - 35
Ralph River - $l5
Telegraph Code - about $34
Living Forest - $41 (this is the one we were a bit disappointed in -- had heard lots about it and felt spots were too tight for our liking.)

RE: VANCOUVER ISLAND

We just came back from one week:
l. First night at Rathtrevor Beach Prov Park in Parksville -- beautiful.
2. Beach front site at Salmon Point RV Park (south of Campbell River)
3. Ralph River Prov Campground at Buttle Lake -- awesome scenery and nice and quiet.
4. Telegraph Cove Marina and RV Park - brand new park that is not even listed yet and nice place to explore northern Van Island from (www.telegraphcove.ca) Also great for a fishing charter or a grizzly or whale watching expedition.
5. Living Forest RV Park near the Duke Point Ferry Terminal south of Nanaimo.

RE: Abbotsford Area Information&Help?

Another suggestion -- when you come through the Sumas customs and enter BC the highway becomes Sumas Way. Continue north until you come to freeway (highway l) and at 2140 Sumas Way (just a few blocks north of the freeway) you will find Save On Foods -- one of the largest and major grocery stores in BC. Then backtrack the few blocks and get on Highway l. There are 2 RV parks immediately next to the highway: Royalwood (www.royalwoodgolf.com) and Cottonwood (www.cottonwoodrvpark.com.) If you are a fast shopper, you should be stocked up on groceries and settled within one hour of crossing the border! Or if you want to carry on past Chilliwack check out www.bridalfalls.ca

RE: Abbotsford Area Information&Help?

Depending on when you come through -- weekends definitely avoid Cultus and after June 26 when school is out in BC. Same thoughts for Harrison as it gets very busy. Also not sure about Harrison as many of the RV parks there have now switched over to private ownership. As you drive Highway #l between Chilliwack and Hope there are highway signs for several private RV parks and any of them should do for the evening.

RE: Electricity in Canada

In Alaska last year on learning we were Canadians, a Texan asked me what country does the Yukon and the Northwest Territories belong to.
At least all these conversion charts on this thread for our hydro are easier to calculate than getting a Canadian postal code into an American zip code box on the computer! Poor gal recently at a South Dakota state park was entirely perplexed on what to do with that dilemna!

RV park registration forms

Does anyone get a bit annoyed at times (like I do!) after a long day of travelling and you come to the RV park and they have a lengthy form to fill out wanting all sorts of data from you -- and this is sometimes only for a one night stay. Had one park that was great in Ogallalla, Nebraska (Countryview Campground) -- they had one sheet and everyone just put down on the same one piece of paper their name and city where they are from. What more should you need from an overnighter?

RE: Travelling to Alberta and need some suggestions

Highway 40 from Longview to Kananaskis opens June l5 -- we tried to do it last weekend and had to go the long way around. Caution: we were lucky to get a spot at Mt Kidd RV park as it was a Sunday evening but they said they are all booked up for every weekend in July and August and I assume once school is out later in June, it will also be booked on weekdays.

Anyone in the Yellowstone area right now? Weather still does not look the greatest but we still think it would be a good time to head that direction before the summer crowds arrive.

RE: Traveling through Navajo Indian Reservation

We drove thru last year and our only problem was we wanted to enjoy the amazing scenery but found we were constantly watching the rear window as just 2 lane highways, often with no proper shoulder to pull out and no passing lanes and everyone was going well beyond the posted speed limits -- including fellow RVers.
