Door Glass on carriage 5th.

Went out to the fiver this am. on leaving I discovered the entrance door glass has dropped down about 1" never had this problem on previous RV'S that I have owned. This is on a 2002 Carriage Cameo 32' I purchased it last fall. From what I have read Carriage produced a very high quality product, something in the door failed. I do all my own repairs after working in maintenance and construction for almost 50 years but not sure how to approach this, is this a 2 piece rubber seal that the glass is mounted in ? Did the seal dry out ? Is there a mastic that holds the glass in place that failed ? Comments would be appreciated Thanks

RE: 5th wheel and short bed trucks ... is this a problem?

I used our short bed F350 to pull our new 32' 5th wheel for one trip last summer. I felt nervous every time I made a sharp turn. I told the DW that I didn't need the stress so we purchased a F350 diesel super duty long bed End of problem.

RE: How long should diesel engine last

Hi...I'm considering buying a used diesel F-350. I'm trying to figure out how many miles are too many miles / km's. I've heard stories of diesels with 600,000+ km on them with "minimal" maintenance. However, I'm wondering what is a more typical life for a diesel engine. Thanks a lot for your thoughts Dan My advice is to try to find a truck that has with it all service records oil change intervals etc. My F350 spent the winters in Florida summers in the north I have all of the service records from day one. And it looks and runs like new. If you do an internet search every day and don't give up you will find a gem. And don't forget the carfax. Good Luck

RE: Bed liners for fifth wheels

I have a friend that recently purchased an F350 PSD the previous owner had a drop in liner that had been cut around the base rails. this allowed water to get under the liner and over a period of time rusted the bed. I would never use a drop in, line-x is the way to go.

RE: Dumb Winterizing Question

I blow out all lines with one of my air compressors with the pressure set at 40 psi. Then I pump RV anti freeze thru all of the lines after draining and by passing the water heater. Sometimes I use -25 wind shield washer fluid in the holding tanks, total cost is less then $20 it's money well spent with temps here in north central OHIO sometimes going well below 0 in Jan thru March.

RE: Jacking up trailer to remove all four wheels

I've got my 25' Sprinter 5er up in the air right now for a 3" chassis lift operation. I went to Lowe's, spent 20.00 on 12- 8" concrete cinder blocks and those, along with some 2x6's were perfect for the job. Lifted the front with the stablizers and the rear with a big floor jack. Seemed to work fine..... Cinder Blacks are VERY BAD, can fail suddenly, you woulod be far better off with 4X4's cut into 1' lengths. I had a friend killed useing Cinder blocks under a car. Cribbing is much safer 4x4 or 6x6. treated yellow pine or oak is best.

RE: Jacking up trailer to remove all four wheels

Just a thought. I'm not an expert on the subject but, many jack stands are rated per pair. If you have 4 four ton stands that would mean 2 sets rated at 8000 pounds or a total of 16,000 pounds. If you're going to place the full weight of the rig on the stands you would be a little heavy at 17,000 pounds. Maybe I did the math wrong? Craftsman 4 Ton Jacks are rated per pair. X2 Jack stands are rated per pair. Be careful

RE: Regrets downsizing fiver

This past summer the DW and I traded in a 38' MH with 2 large slides for a 32" Carrige 5th Wheel. Pullimg it with a F350 this unit is very high quality and lots of room, we have 2 recliners a sofa, table and chairs etc. Basement storage is larger then the MH had. No regrets so far. Thinking about selling the farm and going FULL TIME. :B

Installing a 5th wheel

Question Has anyone ever installed a 5th wheel hitch on top of a plastic bed liner ? I have seen it done various ways. 1. On top bolted thru the liner and the bed. 2. Cutting a slot in the liner so that the steel bracket rests on the steel bed. 3. remove the liner. I dont like # 2 because water will get under the plastic and rust the bed out. I'm leaning toward removal and maybe useing a spray in bed liner or bolting thru the liner. I talked to a local Reese hitch installer they will only install the hitch to the steel bed. not on top of the liner. I dont know the cost of the spray in liners or which one is best. ????:@

RE: Truck Prices

If you can't afford a new diesel unlikely you can afford a used one either if it breaks and it will. I expect it to break. That's not my concern. My two sons are both expert mechanics. The oldest has a degree in automotive engineering and the youngest can pull any engine from any vehicle. Rebuild it and replace it. I won't buy new because I refuse to spend 50 or 60 K on the worst investment in the world. The deprecation is at least 20% the day you drive it home and it drops in value from there each and every year. You buy your new trucks I will buy used, and if something breaks I will repair it in my farm shop or my sons will.

RE: Truck Prices

What year are you talking about? If I could find one I would like to find a 7.3 engine. That engine was built from 1994 & 1/2 to 2003 & 1/2 Most ford people have nothing but praise for this one. I would like to find a 2001 or 2002 F350 PSD super or crew cab with DRW. would like to have as many whistle's and bells as possible but lack of some is not a deal breaker. Power windows - locks - A/C - heated power mirrows - stero -cruise - just to name some but 4 wheel or 2 wheel is ok leather or cloth is not a deal breaker. I found a beautiful 1999 with no rust no body damage and a perfect leather interior but it has almost 200 k on the clock. And they want $ 16 K for it. I'll keep looking

Truck Prices

WOW The DW and I have been searching the web and local dealers looking for a affordable F 350 PSD. Call it sticker shock or what ever seems the going rate for a truck with 175 to 200 K miles is in the $ 15000.00 range. Thats roughly what we paid for our first new home years ago. I was hopeing to find one with less then 100k on the clock. they are few and far between. I'll keep looking. I might have to drive 500 miles but will if necessary.

RE: Opinions on possible truck buy

I have a 1997 F250 HD with the 460 engine 4WD and limited slip I pull a 32 ft Carriage at about 11500 # It has 2 fuel tanks and beleive me I need both. I average about 6 or 7 MPG. And I would never try a trip thru any Mts. Its a great truck for here on the farm pulling fire wood and hay trailers all over the state but I would never reccomend this rig for any long distance travel. We are at the present time shopping for a late model F350 Ford super duty Diesel to pull the 5th wheel and the old 97 will remain on the farm as a all purpose work truck. It's great in the mud and the snow here in north central Ohio and it's very reliable. mine has 172000 miles on the clock with no major issues untill last month it developed an exhaust leak at the manifold the locall muffler shop wanted $1000.00 for the repair so it became a do it your self project. This is something to watch according to the local experts the late 90 460 engines have a problem with rusting manifold bolts that are very difficult to remove and very expensive. This according to the 3 different shops that I took the truck too. Good luck with your purchase. ( My truck has a 4/10 rear end this adds to the poor mpg )

Leather Vs cloth seats ?

Any thought's on leather seats Vs cloth ? We are looking at new trucks. Some say they are great others that they are cold in the winter and hot and stickey in the summer. Comments from those that have had them would be appreciated.

RE: New truck to pull fiver

Thanks for the comments everyone. After talking to various people and reading the posts on different web sites, I will stay away from the 6.0 engine. My next truck will be a Ford and will be a F350 Diesel. With a lot of research and a little luck I will find what i need thanks to the internet.

RE: New truck to pull fiver

I knew a guy who full timed in a 2005 Holiday Rambler, and towed it with a 2005 F-350 dually with diesel engine. He was under his front and rear axle ratings, and just under the GVWR of the truck, but about 1,000 pounds more than the GCVWR of the 2005 F-350. So he trader up to a F-450 pickup. I think his trailer was in the 18,500 pound range, like what you are looking at. Speaking of downsizing, you are going from a 18,000 give or take RV to a 18,000 pound RV being towed by a 7,000 pound truck so well into the 25,000 pound range! In California, you need a special endorsement when towing a trailer rated over a certain weight. I think it is 10,000 or 12,000 for a conventional trailer and 15,000 pounds for a fifth wheel. It is the Maximum GVWR rating, not the actual weight that the CHP is writing tickets for. Out of state licensed trailers do not require this special endorsement. Fred. I think you miss read my post. The MH weighed in at over 22000 loaded. Plus the 3500# toad. the GCWR of the truck is 18500 # the 5th wheel weighs 10355 dry the truck 6450 dry. load capacity of the trailer is 3800# The truck and trailer weight dry is 16805.00 dry. Thats considerably less then the MH so we did down size IMO.

New truck to pull fiver

Just sold my 3rd motor home and bought a 2002 Carriage 5th wheel LXI a 32' unit. This is our 3rd 5th wheel in 40 years of rving so we are not strangers to the pull type. Our objective was to down size somewhat and I feel we accomplished this ( our MH was a 38' unit) We have a Ford F250 HD with a 7.5 engine to pull with. It's border line on being strong enough for this trailer. Gross veh. weight is 18500# the fiver weighs in at 10500# dry and the truck at 6400# before the DW loads everthing on board. I'm thinking about a used F350 ford super duty extended cab dually with a Diesel. question which is the better engine the large Ford Diesel or the smaller one. Does anyone know of any major problems with either one. Your comments will be appreciated.

RE: 2 questions regarding 1994 motorhome

Too answer question # 1. I'm assuming the RV is a 30 amp you should be able to connect it to any 20amp outlet with the proper atep down connections. also assuming that you are not overloading the circuit by trying to run too many appliance's at the same time. It should run one A/C or the fridge and a couple lights but not both at the same time. Question # 2 If you are calling the sewer connection hose " a wire " yes you can purchase sections of the hose at any RV dealer or Wallmart or Camping World. As long as its running down hill the water will flow.
