RE: Cummins 5.9 diesel 275 h.p. Class A D.P. Input

We had a 1999 Winnebago Chieftain DP with 5.9 Cummins 275 hp and 6 speed allison transmission. The coach was 36' and we towed a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It had fair performance and excellent fuel mileage 10-11. We traded it in April on a 2008 Winnebago Tour with 400 ISL Cummins. The coach is a 40 footer and weighs considerably more than the Chieftain and we are getting low 9s on fuel usage. The big difference is the power, we have about twice the torque at 1200.

RE: "Not In Park" indicator on when in park...HWH Hyd. Jacks

I had the same problem on our 1999 Chieftain DP. HWH said it was a ground problem but it took three different techs before it could be run down. In my case a connector in the rear of the coach was not making good contact and the tech found it and snapped it back together. We never had another problem with it after that. Our problem was very aggravating because it was intermitten due to the loose connection it would sometimes work and sometime not. HWH was great on their 800 number in telling me what to look for. Give them a call.

RE: Toad Noise

I tow a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4X2 automatic with a drive shaft disconnect behind my class A DP. It doesn't make any strange noises after 10,000 miles. Sounds like your drive shaft may need to be balanced or the u-joints are bad.

U S Gear Unified Tow Brake Upgrade Module

Has anyone had the upgrade module added to their Unified Tow Brake? It costs about $95 and my dealer says it will take 2 hours labor to put it on. It replaces the 6001 with the new 6002 which has visual and audio alarms which activate if the toad's brakes when they shouldn't. If you have done the upgrade do you feel it is worth it and how much labor was actually involved installing it?

RE: tv converter boxes??

If your tv remote has a "." on it then it is a digital set and no converter box is necessary. You should be able to pick up broadcast digital signals from your batwing.

RE: For retirees, if no SS COLA this year, will you cut travel?

I never paid into SS so I won't draw SS so it doesn't matter to me. Diesel is down 2 bucks from last year and that is the best kind of cola for me.

RE: Loose Mirror - Any thoughts on how to fix

Our last motorhome had a huge mirror behind the bed and it came loose and slid down the wall. It was held to the wall by double-sided mirror tape. We scraped off the old and put new tape on it and it worked great. After 9 years I guess it was time for new tape.

RE: 42' RV

I would be more concerned about the 350 pulling the load than the length. Sounds like a lot of weight for a 350.

RE: Effectiveness of macerators

The problem with the maceradors is how slow they are. I know guys that take 45 minutes to an hour and a half just to empty the black tank. If you are at a dump station the people in line behind you are going to be very unhappy. The only reason I can see to have one is if you are going to dump into you home sewer/septic system and have to pump uphill. What can be simplier or faster than a 3" gravity fed hose with no pump motors to jam or fail?

RE: Transmission Retarder vs. Compression Brake

My ISL 400 has a two stage compression brake. Low which uses three of the 6 cylinders is rated at 130 horsepower and high which uses all 6 cylinders is rated at 300 horsepower. That is some major stopping power.

RE: Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel Required?

While in Florida I pulled into a Pilot station and went around back to the truck pumps. This was a six bay arrangement and was more convenient for our 40' DP with tow car. My wife went in to prepay and I waited for them to activate the pump. I got to looking and the pump had a label saying this was LSD not to be used in 2007 and newer diesel engines. I went inside and asked to be sure and yes none of their truck pumps had ULSD just LSD. If I needed ULSD I needed to pull around to the front of the building and use the pumps for the pickup trucks. It was a much tigher fit but we got in and out ok. I narrowly avoided a major disaster with our 2008 Winnebago Tour with ISL 400. This was the first time I had run into this and will be much more careful in the future.

RE: Used DP purchase -- $$$ and horror starting to scare me

Our first DP was a 1999 model and we bought it in 2007. We had no problems with it and spent about $300 per year on routine maintenance. We had a service contract on it and never had to file a claim and are getting the balance back now that we have sold the coach. We just purchased our second DP a new 2008 Winnebago Tour. Don't be scared by talk of high maintenance costs spread by gas coach owners who don't have DP experience.
