RE: What does your RV forum name mean?

Since moving out of Alaska I have been volunteering for a golden retriever rescue, a breed I have owned and been enamored with for more than 35 years. My friends back north said she's "gone to the dogs"!

RE: Hyder Bears

The town garbage dump (sadly) usually has great bear viewing.

RE: Need help planning extended road trip

When my son was 13 I took my small (22') RV, with our 2 large dogs and set out on a 4 month cross country trip. We left Alaska in mid July and worked our way down to Seattle, then headed east across the northern tier of the U.S., down the eastern seaboard and back along the southern/ southwestern part of the country. We stopped at most national parks and tried to research various historical sites to visit in each state we travelled through. This research constituted a substantial part of his homeschooling on this trip, as well as helping calculate fuel consumed, miles per gallon and such. He became a very good co-pilot, reading maps and plotting routes. He was particularly interested in the battle grounds of the civil war, as well as the settlements of early pioneers. We had a friend who was a flight surgeon stationed at Pensacola, so got a first hand tour of the home of the Blue Angels--very impressive for a 13 year old! We would spend a night in a motel once a week, just to have some extra space, catch up on laundry, and for me, a chance to soak in a tub. My son still talks about all the great things we saw and experienced: a tour guide we had in Philadelphia told him it was not illegal to touch the liberty bell, so he thought it was great fun to do so in front of the guard standing nearby(!); He kept a running total of all the "Wall Drug" signs posted along I-90; watching dynamite used to blast away rock on the Crazy Horse monument; looking for our ancestors names at Ellis Island--these memories are still fresh in his mind. My son wants to take his own children on a similar trip some day. Just remember to allow some "down time" every few days where the kids can just hang out and play and you will create memories to last a lifetime. Barb

RE: Newbie with Dog Show Needs

I travel extensively in my Roadtrek SS Agile with 2 90 lb. golden retrievers. I don't use crates, but do use heavy-duty Bergan travel harnesses which are hooked to the seat belts on the sofa bed. The dogs are very content to travel this way and are safe while in motion. Don't know if this helps, but with 2 very large dogs we travel quite comfortably.

Macerator winterizing question

Having lost my heated garage due to a move this year, I will be winterizing the water system of my 2007 Roadtrek SS Agile for the first time. As some of you know, I have had a few problems with the macerator pump and want to make certain that it is properly protected during the winter. In reading the owner's manual, it suggests using mineral oil to prevent drying out of the unit during periods of disuse. Some folks on this forum suggest mineral oil can be harmful to rubber bushings, gaskets, etc. Here's what I'm considering doing: After draining the holding tank (I only have one tank, a combined black/gray tank), I will put the pink antifreeze down the toilet, then open the gate valve to allow it to flow into the macerator pump. Then I will just barely hit the macerator switch to pull the antifreeze through, then close the gate valve and finish winterizing the rest of the water system normally. Okay all you macerator pros out there: feel free to chime in and let me know if this seems like the proper way to protect the macerator pump from 1) freeze-up and 2) drying out at the inlet side of the pump. Thanks in advance for your replies. I learn so much from this forum and am trying to ensure that I have many trouble free years with my little van. Barb

RE: Odd-coloured bear alongside Alaska Hwy west of Whitehorse

Lovely photos. There was an occasional sighting of a glacier bear when I lived in Juneau during the early 1990s. They are an uncommon black bear. Thanks for sharing!
