RE: Intro - Hawke

Hi Hawke, welcome to the forum and to Truck Camping. We did the Alaska Highway last year it was an amazing trip. I hope you have enough time to do a bit of sightseeing the scenery on the route your are taking is spectacular. Overall the Alaska highway is in good condition except for the 80 miles from approximately Kluane National Park to the Alaska border. This stretch of road is built on permafrost so every year the pavement gets bumpy and potholed. We could barely keep a speed of 35-40 MPH. So allow extra time for this stretch. Here is a link to our blog on that trip if you are interested jcgoodlife.wordpress.com. Safe travels and good luck on the new job.

RE: Where do you buy your LED lights?

Try this place http://www.m4products.com/led-rv-lights/ I just converted all the lights on the interior of my Eagle Cap 1160 to their lights. These were the cheapest prices that I found. anywhere.

RE: With or without oven

Definitely with the oven, we use ours all the time. I hate to run the generator in a campground and we prefer to drycamping.

RE: Which Truck Camper should we buy ???

You should look at the Eagle Caps. I am biased since I own a 2010 1160. However, last year we lived in it for four months on our trip to Alaska and some of the western states. The camper worked flawlessly and overall we liked the design and layout of the camper.

RE: Truck Camper Slideouts - Are They Really Worth It?

Interesting post Mellomike. I had never thought about it we moved from a 22' MH to a truck camper. When we were deciding on a camper there were three features that it had to have:
1. A side entrance
2. more room than our MH but the same or smaller footprint.
3. a dry bath.
After a lot of research and looking at some campers the Eagle Cap 1160 won our hearths. So far we are very happy with our decision. We went on a four month trip last Summer. We loved the extra room and storage that the slides gave us. If we were to buy another TC I again would get slides, a side entrance and a dry bath.

RE: what speed do you maintain on the highway ?

We are usually on the interstate from our home to close to our destination, I have found that keeping the truck at about 2150 RPMs gives me gas mileage I can live with and keeps me going fast enough, 62 MPH, not to piss all truckers off. This past Summer we went on a 14,000 mile trip (our trip of a lifetime) Went thru Canada the Alaska Hwy, Alaska, BC, Vancouver Island, the three west coast wine countries and then back home. In Canada I pretty much followed the speed limit about (60 MPH) same with Alaska. Unfortunately, I think I did piss a lot of people off because I was going the speed limit, oh well I hope they got over it.

RE: Nat Geo Doomsday Preppers truck camper

Mmm I'm thinking that those solar panels are not going to last too long on the front of that TC, unless he's not moving his TC. Am I missing something?

RE: Leveling on Truck?

I have put bubble levels on the camper on all four sides. When we first got the camper I would undo the fastguns and then level with the jacks but I found ,like others, that the camper moved around in the bed. I now pick the most level site we can find and then use blocks. Selection of a nearly level site gets the camper 70& to 80% level. If camper is within an 1" to 1.5 " out of level, left to right, I will use the jacks to level. I also very carefully check the fastguns to make sure they are not being pulled real tight. Front to back it is what it is, within reason (1"). I also found that the basement on the camper started to deflect when I removed the fastguns and leveled the camper (not completely verified that this was the cause). I use the remote to level the camper with the jacks but will retract the jacks manually. We got back from a four month trip this Summer and found that on short trips the batteries where not recharging fast enough for me. I attributed that to the amount time it takes the jacks to retract.

It was great meeting everyone and seeing all the TCs. Don't see very many TCs in and around Chicago. Hope to be able toe do it again next year. Glad no one got hurt with that tire blowout, tires are easy to replace.

RE: Our Big Trip

Thnaks for the tip on NAPA wintersun definitely take that into account. Our favorite wines usually come from the Russian River Valley and Carneros Creek so we will definitely hit those two valleys. We will also try to hit your suggested areas. Thanks for the tip.
