RE: New Coach Batteries, here's what I found about batteries

Has anyone bought & used golf cart batteries sold at Sam's Club? If so, what has been the experience?

RE: best 4x4 to tow and How??

We tow a 2000 Nissan XTerra 4X4 with auto tranny on all 4 down. Have towed it now some 30,000+ miles without any problems. I use a Roadmaster towbar, on my second after about 75,000 miles (moved it from my 1988 Tahoe S-10 4X4 Blazer to my Nissan about 30,000 miles ago. About 2,000 miles ago it froze up and Roadmaster couldn't repair it so they sold me a new one, great product, great company. I use an SMI silent partner in the Nissan, no problems, very happy with this set up. I use the Nissan hard off road, very pleased with it. Have about 65,000 non-tow miles on it.

RE: Yikes, big snowstorm coming my way - need advice!!

If you have to use your generator make sure you check the exhaust pipe frequently to clear the accumulated snow away from the exhaust outlet so you don't get carbon monoxide backup and poisoning inside. Get some padded windshield covers and put them between the window glass and the shades in your bedroom, they are great & cheap insulators in cold temps. Be careful when you step outside and make sure of your footing on your steps, they will fill up with snow too and may also ice over in the heat of the day or when the Sun hits them. If you have tile or linoleum flooring get some carpet or runners on the floor to insulate against cold coming up from underneath...it helps a great deal! If you can use an electric blanket at night, do so, they help manage the cold in your bedroom. Make sure that you have adequate toddy makings.

RE: Smoked Salmon

Here's the best recipe I have ever found. Discovered it in Denmark at a great restaurant:
Take some Wasa crackers or sour dough baguette, sliced at an angle thin toast lightly, then cover with a light smearing of pesto (available at most grocery stores, trader joes, costco, sam's club)place smoked salmon slices on top and add very thinly sliced red onion, capers and a squeeze of lemon juice. You will be a hero!!!!! Serve with any of the following: Iced Vodka, Champagne, Sauvignon Blanc or any very cold spirit like a good Gin such as Bombay Sapphire. Have served this a hundred times and everyone asks for the recipe....very simple and memorable.

RE: Onan Generator shuts down

His generator doesn't have a "carb", it's diesel. Is your engine running?

RE: Washer Dryer Combo

You must have time & patience when using one. Don't overload and be very careful not to use too much soap. DW learned to dry stuff out of the unit as they tend to wrinkle and take much time to dry. Once you accept their short comings you'll like 'em and learn to live with them!

RE: Annual Maintenance Cost

If you're going to put 12,000 miles a year on the 40' rig you are looking at between $250-$450 in oil, filter, fuel/water separator; air filter twice a year. I don't do my oil & filter & lube services as I don't have the facilities to do it on my CAT 3126E 330 HP engine. I do the Onan genny myself and that is about $40 per 150 hours including the filters. You will change the 6 or 8 tires after 4 to 6 years and that is expensive and can't be avoided or postponed. Cost? Depends on what you buy & where you buy them. Figure at least $600 per tire for 22.5" tires. Then there is other stuff like carpet cleaning, Black & Gray water additives, hoses, electrical cords etc. I wax mine twice a year about $10 per. Add water filters and at least one water pump every 2+ years. It seems to never end but that's the price of owning one! I am on my 4th motor home and one would think I would know better now, but it's a very essential part of our lives....so what's that worth? To each his/her own!

RE: Allison Trans..Economy or Standard Mode?

The only difference between the economy and non-economy mode is that the non mode shifts gears faster as when you are city driving with frequent stop lights. Use economy on the open road and if you come to a grade shift out of economy to let the engine and tranny shift to the higher rpms when its ready. IMO, economy is a misnomer.

RE: Mapping Software

I bought DeLorme for my laptop. Too complicated and cumbersome. It takes too much time to change a planned route. The GPS antenna works well but I get frustrated using the software.

RE: Inverter Question

Rarely ever turn ours on even when I dry camp. Either plugged into pole power or use the generator. The first two years I owned this rig I left it on all the time and burned out a mother board. Had the board replaced and the Xantrex tech told me no sense to have it on unless you are using it, I don't use it!!

Do you have a brand name? Did you have to do anything to your panel controller to accommodate the increase to 2000?

RE: New Progressive Industries EMS

Just bought the 50 amp portable and used it for the first time on a 30 amp post with a 30 to 50 adapter. The unit was brand new and defective. Called Progressive in North Carolina, no questions asked they fed-x'd a new one with a return paid label. Great service, reputable company, very responsive.

RE: Changing diesel air filter

What engine do you have? I have a CAT 3126E and the filter weighs about 20 lbs and I get it from NAPA auto parts fro about $70. CAT dealer wants $160 and he goes next door to the same NAPA, Monaco wanted over $300 and they get it from NAPA too!!!! Just make sure that the clamps are tight and the hoses are secure and sealed, you don't want air leaks. Have fun.
