RE: Caterpillar Diesel

I have a CAT 3126E now and have had 3 Cummins engines as well. One current Cummins. I would not make the decision to buy an RV on whether it has a CAT or Cummins engine. They are both bullet proof if you do the maintenance religiously. You can get a dog in anything mechanical. I have also had a Mercedes diesel and was not fond of it but it was ok, not b great. Get the serial number of the CAT engine and call the CAT RV line, 1 877 777 3126, and ask them for any history they have on the engine. The techs on the hotline are super and very helpful.

RE: 2001 diplomat class A 330 cummins - looking to purchase

I don't know here you live or where the coach is located; however, I wouldn't buy a coach (especially one of that age) without finding a really good tech to do the PDI so you can use that info in negotiating with the seller. Too many coaches look great and have low mileage but once you own it you also own the repairs and fixes! A 10 year old coach doesn't normally have any warranties left on it so any binkies are on your check book. You should also insist on all of the maintenance records and call Monaco (i know they were sold) and give them the VIN # to see what they can tell you about the coach. Check the tire manufacture date on the inside if the tires, all of them, as replacing 6 tires is very expensive and they might look great but if they are 7 years or older you will be faced with that expense fairly quickly.

RE: Really -- $1,500 for PDI ! Seriously???

In 2003 we picked up our DP at the Monaco factory in Coburg, OR. We bought the rig from a dealer in CA. Included in the price was a PDI which cost us $1,250. The factory tech who performed the PDI knew less about the coach than we did and only spent 2 hours with us part of that time he was on a personal phone call. When we complained to the dealer he refunded the cost of the PDI and then got Monaco to do the job right!! If I were to buy another new RV (or even a used one) I would find an independent tech to do the PDI.

RE: RV awning

We have had 4 RVs with awnings, every make on the market. Our current is a 16' Carefree of Colorado. It is the OEM supplied on our 10 year old Monaco product. It is electric powered model and it has worked flawlessly and the fabric looks brand new. I do rinse it off after each trip and let it air dry open, no soap or other cleaner used.It works for me.

RE: Need air pressure gauge and chuck

I had the same problem on my 22.5" tires. When I picked up the DP at the Monaco factory 10 years ago one of the managers gave me a top of the line set of extenders. I had one fail last year at 45,000 miles and Les Schwab replaced it for nothing. I wouldn't be able to check my rear tires without them. Go for it!!!

RE: Monaco motorhomes

I Own a Monaco product and bought it new in 2003 and while Monaco owned Monaco the service was very good at the factory. I went to Coburg when Navistar took over Monaco and it was very trying. I don't think Navistar had it's heart in the RV business and in my opinion Navistar never understood a business where they had to deal directly with the consumer. Their business is big trucks which are sold thru & by dealers and Navistar was insulated from the ultimate owner/buyer. That was very apparent in my experience at Coburg. When they bought Monaco out of bankruptcy they brought in someone from Ford who probably didn't understand the RV industry and buyer either. He may have been a good auto exec but Monaco never really put in the effort they needed to devote to win over or win back the consumer. Just my opinon.

RE: New Crate Engine 454 up and running

I had a 1985 454 and it continually fried spark plug cables and just one bad wire would make it backfire.

RE: 395 North to Lake Tahoe

I have taken my 36' DP towing a 4,500lb Nissan Xterra from Reno to Carson City up route 50 to South Lake Tahoe a number of times with the same engine you have and it flew up the mountain. Never over heated. Carson City is at 5,000' and you will climb over 7,500' to the Lake which is at 6,200' .

RE: Acceptable Delivery Miles

Picked up my DP at the Monaco factory in Coburg, OR. Like Mr. Mark I didn't want someone else driving it to Sn Diego. It had 107 miles on it when I picked it up.

RE: Washer Dryer combo

We have had the W/D combo in our RV for 10 years now and love it. Ours is the vented model and it works better than the non vented model, so we are told. It doesn't dry as well as your home dryer but we have learned to live with it. Didn't want one when we bought this RV new but it was in there and wouldn't own another RV without it. Beats using public washers/dryers and wasting time waiting for a machine to come free or having to sit in a dingy room while your stuff gets done!

RE: what temp should hub be with infared thermometer

I have used infrared temp sensor from Harbor Freight for about 5 years. I have a 36' DP and always check the tire temps and the toad tire temps and have developed a range that is "normal" for both the RV and the toad. I also check the radiator/CAC and tranny cooler temps since I don't trust the dashboard instruments. It is interesting to see the temperature difference in various parts of the radiator. I have consistently found that the drivers side tires have a few degree higher reading due to the road crown on most 2 lane highways, but not on most interstates. However, one note of caution when using the Harbor Freight device...it is very sensitive to the condition of the batteries. Even though you will get a reading from the device when the device batteries are not fresh it will give you false readings. you need to keep fresh batteries handy for it.

RE: Allies Specialty Vehicles Buys Monaco Corp Today

Let's hope their attitude is better towards the customer than Navistar!!! I don't know if the new owner is more tuned into dealing with the ultimate customer/owner. Having dealt with the factory service center in Coburg after Navistar took over I can tell you that IMO they viewed the coach owner as an inconvenience.

RE: Plastic leveling blocks

Although I have two bags of them I have only used one bag once on very soft ground. The rest of the 45,000 miles on this DP they were excess baggage.

RE: Dumping air when parked

Peaches & Cream has it right. I have a 2003 safari Cheetah 36' DP. It has the same basic chassis as your Endeavor. Put out your slides, dump air and then level. When you dump air you are lowering the rig closer to the ground and will have more leveler extension available for you to work with. Make sure your parking break is set and block your tires. Once you dump air your parking brake is the only thing keeping your rear tires from moving. NEVER, NEVER LIFT YOUR REAR TIRES OFF THE GROUND!!

RE: Dingy

We tow a 2000 Nissan XTerra 4 X 4 auto. Have towed it almost 45,000 miles with no problems and no drive shaft disconnect. Prior toad wad a 1988 Chevy Tahoe 4 X 4 with a drive shaft disconnect and it was a pain.

RE: 1995 28ft Georgie Boy, Chevy 454, P30 chassis

I had a 1985 Allegro 23' with a454 on the P-30 Chassis. I got rid of it at about 40,000 miles as it was a repair & maintenance nightmare. Blew through 3 sets of manifolds/headers due to heat. It had fuel vapor lock issues that no one could cure. I wouldn't touch another 454 or a P-30 chassis!!!!!

RE: dingy towing 4 wheels on ground?

I had one on a 1988 Chevy S-10 Tahoe 4X4. I used it for about 10 years. I hated it! Had endless problems getting the splines to engage after towing so that I could drive the S-10. I spent many hours under that S-10 in the dirt and mud to get it to lock in. I had the installation checked numerous times and nothing improved the process. Maybe it was my vehicle that was the problem; however, IMO I doubt it. I've talked with other Rvers who loved the product. My experience is such that I wouldn't buy another vehicle which couldn't be towed without installing a disconnect drive shaft.

RE: Aussie couple driving Montana LLC registered RV into Canada

I would certainly check with US Customs before going into Canada in case you are checked coming back to the US as to what they expect. Don't assume that Montana plates will whisk you through US Customs. Google US Customs/Immigration as a start. When you get to the US agent at the kiosk and he hears you accent he may shuttle you into secondary inspection. You need to know what they will want to see...paperwork wise. They may want to inspect your RV and ask you to leave the coach. Be polite, don't make jokes, don't volunteer info they didn't ask for.
