RE: Looking for feedback on Skyline products.

We just looked at a NEW (leftover) 2008 Malibu 2510. We were very disappointed! The floor plan was exactly what we wanted, but the trailer had way too many broken parts for not being "used". Also the fit and finish was deplorable. When we sat on the couch and looked at the kitchen area it was very apparent that this trailer was not built right. The stove was not square to the floor and the counter top was wacky-jaw! The counter top was also coming unglued at the sink end. When we mentioned this to the sales man / owner he just shrugged it off, and wouldn't budge on what was an average to high price. Well I guess we wont be upgrading from our hybrid just yet. When we were looking at trailers we saw this as well - but in a couple of different makes. There were two identical trailers side by side. Same floorplan, same trailer, same plant. One looked like it had been put together by a 3 year old, the other by a contractor with an eye for perfection. This is why I always recommend that you go through the trailer you are going to buy before making the deal. Much easier to pop out of it and ask if they have another one like it to look at than to try and get a myriad of items fixed after a purchase. We spent almost 2 hours in ours before we went in to make a deal. We poured through it with a fine toothed comb and wrote down the vin and sales number that was on it. When we did the paperwork I double checked the sales # and vin were correct and did the same when we did the PDI.

RE: Trailer w/bunk beds

Jayco JayFeather line has a triple bunk model with great cabinet space. Large cabinet in the bunk area - perfect for games and clothes. Saw it recently at a show and thought it was a great layout. Lightweight, not too long. 23k

RE: Camping with kids - buying a new TT - bunks or not?

bunks! Making beds up and down every night and morning gets really old really fast. Some of our trips are 12-14 days long. That's a lot of putting down and putting up! The Jayco Jayflight 23K is a great triple bunk model with lots of cabinet space in the bunk area - great section for games and clothes. Saw this one recently at an RV show and really liked how it was designed inside. 23K

RE: Options advice for new TT

Everyone has been giving great advice. A few have mentioned purchasing through my local dealer. I'm definitely a fan of supporting my local economy. My issue is that the nearest Rockwood dealer is a 3 hr drive. I spoke with another dealer who told me that he could not get that model trailer. I have found only one Rockwood Ultra Light 2501SS in the entire state. He told me that he could knock $4000 of of the 27K MSRP and that it would cost 2-3K more (than the one on the lot) if I wanted to order one with the options that we want. Granted, I haven't waved a fistful of cash in his face to see what exactly he would take. My plan was to get quotes from the internet wholesale sites and then start checking with dealers that were at least closer than Elkhart, Indiana. Ultimately, going with the best overall price. Has anyone out there purchased from RVDirect or RVWholesalers and wish that they had gone through a local dealer instead? I may need to rethink my strategy. One other thing to keep in mind is that RV dealers are not car dealers is as much as some rv dealers will not work on trailers they didn't sell. So if you need to take it to the dealer for repair and you bought it in another state your trailer may always get put to the bottom of the list as the dealer puts their customers who bought from them ahead of you or won't work on it at all. At that point 3 hours would look like a drive to the park when you can't get your trailer repaired and have to drive to another state where you bought it. As said, not ALL do this and in this economy some dealers might have changed the way they do things but it's one more thing to check into before buying. Also, there might be another make of trailer with the same floorplan of the Rockwood you light. Many floorplans can be found in all different makes and brands. Which floorplan in the Rockwood are you looking at buying?

RE: Help with where to camp in the Grand Canyon area

Trailer Village inside the park at the South Rim. Full hookups and can be reserved in advance. Once there, ride the buss system everywhere in the park for free. Keith +5 +6 or is it 7 by now. If you want to see the canyon - I mean REALLY SEE the canyon, you won't be doing that on a train ride from Williams in the mid afternoon for barely a couple of hours at most. That is "looking" at the canyon. "seeing" the canyon is to see it early in the morning bathed in new sunlight with all the colors vivid and clear. "seeing" it is taking the tram up to Hopi point for the sunset and watching the canyon colors change before your eyes and the shadows settling on the canyon walls as the sun goes down. When we were there they had a stargazing night with high powered telescopes and we were able to gaze upon saturn, jupiter and so many other stars and clusters that it boggled the mind. Sorry, but you can't "see" the canyon from Williams on a train ride - you'll only look at it without seeing it's true beauty. There's a reason that the south rim is one of the most photographed. And those gorgeous photos are not shot in the middle of the day. Stay inside the park. Another vote for Trailer village. easy walk to the rim or take the very excellent shuttle service back and forth.

RE: Options advice for new TT

Gas/Electric DSI water heater. Who wants to go out and light the thing everytime you want to use it? Just flip a switch from inside and your good to go.

RE: Reservation required ?

I knew it was the right place to post ! :) Thank you guys for your answers and suggestions. If I understand well California is "the place to be" in July particularly the NP (like Ste Maxime or St Tropez ?? Oh My God ! :( ). We don't have yet our complete trip in mind but we know already that we want to go to King's Canyon, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, then Lassen, Mt Shasta and go back south by the coast. I hope that between the big crowded place like Yosemite and Lake tahoe we will find some small peaceful campground. What do you think ? places like Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Lake Tahoe will require reservations for July. People start in January, for reserving sites in Yosemite for July. Lassen and Shasta are less visited. some places will need reservations but some may not. July is the busiest month for camping in California. the popular NP and State Parks along with anything on the coast are full before summer even starts. by the way, if you are going to Yosemite and King's Canyon, you have to go to Sequoia NP. that's not to be missed and i live in Calif. and see redwoods all the time. there is nothing on earth like the Giant Sequoias. I am making reservations for August in Lake Tahoe - Today! Yes, that's what it takes in California to vacation in the summertime. State parks take reservations 6 months in advance I believe BUT you must know if you want the first of the month you need to call and make reservations for the last couple of days in the month before and then you can reserve into the next month at that time. For example if you want reservations in July, you would call in January but if you want the first week of July you need to call in December and reserve June 29-July 5th (or whatever dates you wanted). It's kind of a well known "secret" on how to get the first of the month reservations. If you wait till January to get reservations for the first week of July, they will all have been booked in December.

RE: Looking for feedback on Skyline products.

We have a 2000 Nomad Ultrlite 24ft TT. We have never had any problems with this unit at all. The only thing we have replaced has been the linoleum floor, which split down the middle due to the thawing and freezing here in Wisconsin. Which has happened a LOT in the last year! Problem went across all lines of makes and models of RV's.

RE: cheap and easy mat for outside

Just noticed www.rvawningmats.com is having a good sale. We have this type of mat, bought elsewhere and really like it. It's pretty, easily to handle, easy to shake out. Your not kidding! Awesome sale. Looks like i'll be upgrading....NOW! thanks for the heads up!

RE: cheap and easy mat for outside

i thought they all got wet and dirty??? not being a smart a**, just question why the others are better in that sense? i would like to know, i'll buy one too if it helps in that area. Yes, but the other awning mats are so lightweight and don't "hold" the water like the artifical turf - they allow the water to go through them. As far as the dirt - sweep most of it off and you can hose down when you get home and they dry quick and stay light. The artifical turf holds the water and you can't really sweep off the dust and dirt. plus, over time with ours, the black backing starts to crumble and make a mess everywhere too.

RE: Slow running desktop

My IT guy swears by Spybot search and destroy. Free download from internet. He uses it to clean up the one PC left in the house for us (switched to MAC 2 years ago). Keeps it running pretty good.

RE: cheap and easy mat for outside

It's what we use for now. However, when they get wet they are HEAVY and hard to clean when they get dusty or dirty (easy to hose down but HEAVY when wet and take awhile to dry). Also a pain to fold up when they are dusty or dirty from the campground - I get all dusty and dirty just folding them and putting them into a trash bag. Works for us for now but am keeping my eye out for a sale of the lightweight foldable awning mats to replace the artifical turf ones.

RE: Looking for feedback on Skyline products.

Good line of trailers. Don't read much negative about them because there isn't much negative about them. One member on here did have a lot of problems with his but doesn't seem to be the norm for a skyline product. Keep in mind even the best maker will make a lemon once in awhile. But skyline has so few you just don't hear much. Was on our short list to buy but the local dealer who sold them kept yanking our chain and tried to pull a bait and switch on us so we walked and found something else. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one. Pretty solid built trailers IMO.

RE: Opinions of Skyline Aljo/Nomad 2911b

Thanks for the support. :) It all worked out in the end, we just ordered a 2010 Keystone Hideout with our ideal floorplan with nice upgrades for less than Giant wanted for the '09 2911B. Sure, it's not laminated fiberglass sides but it does have an enclosed and heated freshwater tank and we definitely didn't feel like we were "settling" for something that wasn't exactly what we wanted. Funny how I had pegged it as Giant RV that did that! Only reason is they tried to do the same thing on me! Gave me 3 different prices on the same trailer - then tried to sell me the exact same one at their "low, low rv show price" which was thousands of $$$$ more! they are a crooked bunch! Glad to hear you got what you wanted! Enjoy it!

RE: Travel Trailer vs. 5er vs Toy Hauler

Tow vehicles requirements will vary greatly between a travel trailer to a 5er/toy hauler. You can tow a lot of trailers with a 1/2 ton truck but you can't tow many (if any) 5er's with a 1/2 ton. They don't have the cargo capacity on the truck to support the tongue weight required of a 5er. For a 5er, your looking at a 3/4 to 1 ton truck to pull them. What are you looking to tow with?

RE: Good First TT for me? (Updated w/ pics 10/18)

I know we've been PM'ing regarding trailers but wanted to say CONGRATS on your purchase! BTW: We are one of those families that didn't want a slide, didn't get a slide, aren't sorry we don't have a slide and LOVE our trailer without the slide! We have teens, have had them bring friends along - no big deal. I buy what suits me and my family now and not what someone else might want in the future or future resale value. We plan to keep this trailer for another 5 or so years before DOWNGRADING to a smaller trailer for 2 (in 5 years this kids will both be in college). We'll have kept the trailer for 8-10 years at that point. Trailer we're downgrading too also does not have a slide - but it's an Airstream - 'nuf said. :B Not everyone HAS to have a slide to camp and be happy. Enjoy your camping time in your new trailer!

RE: Opinions of Skyline Aljo/Nomad 2911b

Sorry to hear of your "out the door" woes. We also deal with ONLY out the door price. Re: Skyline. Skyline has been in business for 55+ years, is a debt free company (at least as of last year) and they do make a good trailer. they were on our short list but fell to the wayside when the trailer was optioned out to be the same as the Jayco we liked but was thousands more $$$$$ so off to Jayco we went. Otherwise we'd be camping in a Skyline Aljo. A member here has had a myriad of problem (all solved now I believe) but you will get that with any trailer maker regardless-they all make a lemon at some point. Some brands more than others. BTW: Let me guess - was the dealer Giant RV? Anyhow....other brands for you to look at: KZ Spree Jayco Tango by Crossroads Lance

RE: Seeds ???

During a warm up in the Fall ladybugs can come out by the thousands and congregate and can get through the smallest openings. What color are the seedlike things? If they are yellow to whitish in color they could be ladybug eggs. Something is going on here definitely. Like one poster said, you have a lady bug invasion on the outside and possible mouse on the inside. Set a trap inside and leave the ladybugs alone - they'll be gone soon.

RE: Light weight large family TT ideas

We are a family of 7 that is now shrinking fast as far as camping goes. The 5 are in college or grown and gone. We went to the extra tent instead of camper. The kids loved it when they were teenagers and so did mom and dad. It is a lot less expensive than other options as well. Most of the places we camp did not mind a small tent in addition as long as it was kids and not another family. Just my .02. This was going to be my recommendation as well. Invest in a really nice tent and a couple of aerobeds for the older kids.

RE: Deals at the show?

In California the RV show in Pomona is really a good place to look and get an idea of what is out there. Leave the checkbook at home. My experience was/is that Giant RV takes up most of the show and they jack up the MSRP price and then lower it making you think your getting a good deal when it really isn't. We had been on there lot literally a few days before the show trying to deal on a specific trailer. That same trailer was at the show with a much higher price and their "deal" was thousands more than the best price at their lot. We walked away and decided to just look and see what else is out there. Found another trailer we liked and ended up buying at that dealers lot instead and got a super deal.
