RE: Epic (for us) road trip

Years ago we left Atlanta for a family reunion on the Oregon Coast. We were in our minivan. It was crammed full with 5 of our 6 kids (ages 7-16), so we drove up to I-40 and didn't stop until we hit Albuqueque. Had family there, so we rested up a couple of nights and saw old town Albuq. BTW: DH and I revisited last 4th of July and still enjoyed it. Especially, good Mexican food, much better than anything we had had in San Antonio. Then from there we headed to the Grand Canyon. Before GPS, I depended on my Road Atlas. Knew we needed a break before the GCnyon, so when I saw we'd be going through the Petrified Forest NP, we decided to take a break. We walked, we ooed and awwded and took video of the petrified rock sculptures, some were "talking rocks" and the beautiful views of the Painted Desert. We ALL thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Finally, I had to call everyone back into the minivan for the final time and it was off to the Grand Canyon. Amazingly, I found it not as exciting and sort of a letdown. We walked around, took a few photos, lost 2 of the kids (oldest and youngest) who decided to try one of the trails down into the canyon and headed west through the Mojave Desert. We timed it so we'd be driving at night, because we heard it would be too hot in July for most radiators. From GC, we drove up to the Redwood Forest. Our Astro van with mirrors pulled in was just wide enough, that we could drive through one of the trees at the Visitor's Center. Also a highlight of our trip.

RE: Are the six point level systems worth it?

We ordered ours with it. It has a remote, but DH prefers to level it with buttons. Only once did we have a problem with front jack trying to drop when we were trying to leave the park. Ran them all down and not a problem since. That was 3 years ago. DH was able to raise it up high enough to change out a tire on one of our trips last summer. Then all up to switch out new tires last fall in the RVPark. Our prior Suite didn't have it and we used to carry around stacks of wood blocks when we were parked on a slope. Was nice to get rid of those.

RE: Rock my RV tv show.

Watched episode 1 and 2. #1 with family was good, but all I could think about was WEIGHT. It let DH know how much it would cost to add a bedroom slide! #2 wasn't my taste. #3 is on DVR and am not really excited to watch. They need to pick fulltimers rather than celebrities to update. I'd volunteer our unit, but we don't like gaudy and only need a few tweaks.

RE: M.S.R.P.

Right now they are having record sales in RV's. We got 16% at an RV Show when the economy was good in 2006. Much less when we traded in 2008 when sales started were dropping because we were upside down. Now, we are even farther upside down and so if we traded, we'd have to come up with $$$$'s.

RE: Disney Tickets from Good Sam Smile and Save Program

Being a FL resident,I'm forever getting Disney discount flyers. They say they are just for FL residents and their guests.Never checked into if the resident has to be with the group though. We never get those... But my BIL works at Disney and he can get us free tickets if we needed them. Two of my kids w/their families are there this week. They used their Military Discount for Disney and Universal and saved quite a bit for the 6 of them. From GSClub site: "The Official Ticket Center of Orlando, Florida has partnered with Good Sam Club to offer members the lowest prices* on Orlando theme park tickets for stays 3 days or longer. If you are planning on visiting Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, SeaWorld or any other of Orlando's world famous theme parks, then click here to SAVE on your attraction tickets. Or, call 1-877-406-4836. *Savings varies for adult & child tickets. No savings on 1 or 2 day ticket packages. Savings increase as number of days of ticket package increase."

RE: Insects in the toilet bowl

Different RVParks, with different sewer systems and we still occasionally get the small black flies during a flush. I used to think it was eating fresh fruit every spring/summer. I've used flying bug spray down the poop chute and it will kill a few. Just don't know about hundreds.

RE: Sleeping problems in Travel Trailer

Does it have a low setting with adjustable fan running non-stop? One feature that makes Summers hard to sleep for me is the heat rises into our bedroom. The AC can be noisy, but I'd rather be cool than sweating and thrashing all night. I'm a Princess and Pea, too. We bought a Denver mattress (Durango) 2 years ago, added a visco foam topper last year, 600ct sheets and still occasionally I can't get comfortable. This Winter in GA & NC, I've still needed the table fan running on low most nights. DH is like a heater, so sometimes sleep better after he's left in the morning. We're buying a Cool Gel foam topper to see if that helps prevent heat buildup under the sheets. It's a little firmer and hope it helps support my back. We have one in our guest room with an older pillowtop mattress and box springs and I don't wake up quite as stiff.

RE: Fulltimers: What type of rig do you have?

You'll find everyone has their own style of travel and their own style of living. Since we aren't retired and DH is still working fulltime, we found a 5th wheel and large TV was the most practical form of living for us. We park the unit and move into a new community 2-3X's a year. We actually don't find it much different than living in 3000sf, just fewer rooms to clean. We remodeled to fit our comfort level and traveling to each new project with DH and 2 cats has become very easy. I cook most of our meals and even make DH's lunch when he's too far to come home each day to watch "The Price is Right". Has taken a few adjustments, but cooking for 2 is easier than for 8+. It took us 3X to get the right RV (OR-10mos-40', ES-2.75 yrs-36' and MS-4.5-38'). The MS has the right floorplan, adequate insulation and right size to pull comfortably. Sometimes, we think we'd like to trade for a new one with additional features. But we've made this one so comfortable, hate to spend even more for brand new. We only need a few more tweaks and we'd be able to save more for retirement.

RE: Banks

We use 2 "no fee" banks. One online and one brick and mortar. Just in case one ATM card is compromised, we have access to a 2nd. Smartphones are more secure than ATM's. We never deposit cash, we use it at CG's that give us a discount for Cash vs CC. Checks deposit easily through iPhone apps. Online bank has been doing it for a couple of years and B&M bank just added that feature. The online bank makes it easy to transfer money from different banks automatically. Last year, I was able to set up an automatic transfer for payments on an RV Lot that we bought from a private party and they are carrying the contract. The elderly couple really like that feature because the money is always in their bank account before the first of the month.

RE: Sold house in one day

Update - closing is on June 10th. New owner has ordered granite counter tops for kitchen and bath rooms already so it appears it will happen. Good News. We were always warned that until they signed the papers at closing, that there were no guarantees.

RE: House Flies

On occasion, we've brought pests with us and they were dormant in some of the storage bins. Once the weather warmed up, so did they. I got my exercise using a flyswatter. Luckily, we have cats who notify me when we've got unwelcome guests crawling on the curtains, etc.

RE: Tenn. Trip Planning

We've been through that area a few times. You can't really tell how an area is within a couple of days because you can't test out the weather without spending a season or two. But even if you had week or two, it would make it easy to scout around the area. The two farthest points are within an hour, easily drivable for an afternoon of site seeing.

RE: Folding Murphy bed mattress is unbearable

I'd say you may need to go semi-custom for replacement. Now there is standard foam, Visco foam and a Gel foam (some cool, some ventilated) toppers in 2-4". If you find a type of foam that is comfortable and fits the space, you can cut it into the 3 sections. Or if you prefer find a local foam store where you can test, buy and have them cut to fit. Any zipped mattress cover will usually fold into the 3 sections. You'll only run into problems if they need to be separated and then you'd have to cover each section individually. Not too hard, either, using some flat sheets for covering. Cut and sew like a huge pillow case and then hand stitch the ends shut or fold inside to remove easily for cleaning.

RE: Motorhome Magazine

Nothing I hate more than someone who lets a frisky dog run loose without a leash. While dog owners think "he's never hurt anyone", when it comes running up to my grandkids or even me barking. I'd just as soon be wearing DH's steel-toed boots and give it a swift kick in another direction.

RE: Problems encountered full timing ?

We carry lots of quarters for the laundromats. We only save quarters for car washes. Not all RV Parks allow us to wash the RV or F450. Only time we've used a Laundromat was when we were getting some upgrades on the Suite and didn't have full hookups. Otherwise, there haven't been very many surprises. Just that we've enjoyed fulltiming even more than we originally thought.

RE: I guess we aren't going to do this soon...

We sacrificed for our kids. But then we had 6 and it was too hard to find an RV that would sleep 8 with 2.5 bathrooms. You know the process, no reason to feel bad because you may delay the fulltiming. We always thought we'd have to wait until retirement because of our kids and grandkids. But we found a way to begin FTing in our early 50's.

RE: Finding a well-built rig

Hi, Susan and Chris here again-- continuing our quest for the right rv. Toured the DRV factory and, are you guys right! We were amazed at the quality of material and workmanship. Reality tells us, however, that we can probably afford a unit about 50% of the price of a Mobile Suites. Any of you out there have experience with the Sanibel? We know not to expect the quality of DRV, but the 3500 appears to be a good unit. We have learned from you out there not to necessarily trust factory brochures or sales people, so your opinions would be welcome... We toured the DRV factory on a Tuesday in early July of 2008 after touring the Carriage factory the day before. We promptly went to our next location and within 2 mos had custom ordered our 2nd Suite with all the features our 2006 36TK3 Elite Suite didn't have. They had upgraded some of the features in 2009, more in 2010, additional ones in 2011. But in 2009 models, they didn't have the exact floor plan we wanted. So we asked if they could change the peninsula kitchen into an extended Island. They could do it at very little cost and it made us very happy. Since then, we've added even more features that make it even more comfortable. We've wintered in the north and spent summers in the south. So we know that Suites are livable all 4-seasons.

The Good Sam iPhone/iPad app is much easier to use.
