RE: Funny Town Names?

sidianel posted Climax, GA; in the 70’s my wife and I would go cave crawling with a car club we were in and one of the caves was located there. The name was, wait for it, Blowing Hole. Not a town, as such, but on the Parks Hwy halfway between Fairbanks, AK and Nenana there is an Inn/Bar: “Skinny Dick’s Halfway Inn”. Inn

RE: Heartland Landmark vs DRV Tradition

On my 2nd DRV/MS. DRV will customize the unit for you, using stuff from their different models, if possible, and install stuff you send them from outside sources; you only have to ask and they will work with you. Might want to check into the feasibility of the MS, very livable.

RE: 5th wheel brakes

I have the same truck; tried to get mine to work but was told there is an updated program for the trucks computer but have not looked into it further. Also, my 5er came with the Carlisle HBA-CAM which is designed to make the 5er's electrohydraulic brakes work with the IBC. I am currently using a P3 but plan on working on checking into the update. Not knowing what kind of unit you have there is still some more info at this site: SOITC. Some comments I've read said the setting they have used is 7.5 volts for a pretty heavy 5er. Hope this helps and let us know what you do to resolve this issue.

RE: Accident that completely destroyed this fifth wheel trailer.

cha-ta, if you saw a picture of a horrendous car crash, would you respond the same way and say you should show the picture to someone who wanted to ride in a car? And, no, I am not advocating riding in a trailer, just that one accident like this needs to be put in perspective. For each RV accident there are probably thousands more involving cars, many with fatalities. Like others, I too hope no one was hurt and that the 5er can be replaced with little monetary loss to the owner.

RE: Overweight and insurance

Insurance contracts spell out what is covered and what is excluded. Has any one read their contract and found any reference to weight ratings?

RE: aren't we 'bout sick of tire stuff???

Check the GY website; IIRC it is every 6 months.

RE: Password Protected Files Issue

When I have a question about a file and can't find info on my computer, I google the file and you will find lots of info to help you out.

RE: hauling fifth wheel with canoe

It could tow it but could it stop it? And then you have the issue of the sea state rating of the 5er!

RE: Pads under landing gear?

Yes & no. Yes: carry yellow blocks to reduce extension of hydraulic rams for additional stability. No: haven't needed to prevent sinking into the ground, if not on concrete. Yes: have large concrete blocks that I use on our lot, that we own, in AZ to minimize hyd ram extension to only a couple of inches for added stability.

RE: Roof Vents

On some 5er's there is one real vent and the others are used to contain wiring for various add ons: solar, sat wiring. So said someone on another forum. I know at least one of my vents is plugged.

RE: emergency brake cable to trailer

I am on my 3rd 5er and this is my solution to the problem: I remove the original thin coated break away cable and add one that is a few inches longer than the 5er's electrical cord. I have an in bed 7 way connector and a small eyebolt beside it that I hook the break away cable to. I also loosely tie wrap the break away cable to the electrical cord to keep it from catching on anything. If the 5er breaks away from the truck for any reason the main cable and the break away cable will also pull away from the truck energizing the brakes. While towing my current 5er for the first time, bringing it home from the dealer, I made a fairly sharp turn backing up and the break away cable pulled out and stopped me.

RE: Thinking of getting a 5th Wheel

Pulled a 2007 MS 36TK3 with a 2003 GMC D/A that I had installed higher wt rated tires/wheels and Firestone air bags and a tuner. Several trips coast to coast, up and down hills without issues. GCW usually 25.5 to 26K. In 2008 traded for sig truck. Works much better; the Banks SpeedBrake really makes going downhill easier. Now with sig 2013 MS 38RESB3 we run just about 27K. Works just fine. Take a look at: SOITC. Lots of good info on DRV's.

RE: Banks Speed Brake for chevy LMM

A dmax will rev to 4800 rpm when stock and grade braking. The computer will not over rev, it will upshift. The speedbrake doesn't change that. Not sure what connection you are trying to make with the speedbrake and a leak of some fluid. My speedbrake and dmax have been trouble free.

RE: Banks Speed Brake for chevy LMM

Installed the speedbrake/iq/econominder on my TV about 30K ago; towed a MS 36TK3 up until this Aug when we traded for our 2013 MS RESB3 this Aug. Have towed about 2500 miles. The only glitch it has is every once in a while the iq will not show the last screen that was displayed after turning the truck off and then back on and I have to go through a short menu to get back to the proper display screen. No other problems. The speedbake has lots of variables to play with but I found that using the auto feature with a programmed target speed works best for me. What happens is if I exceed that speed and lift off the accelerator the speedbrake will start doing its job slowing down to that speed. If I want to go slower I just beep down the speed via the iq and it slowly gets to that speed. 6-7% grades are just fine; only need the brakes if a curve comes up/traffic and I need to slow up more quickly. If I am using the cruise control and the speed starts increasing going down a hill and I don't want to wait for the grade braking to take over or the hill is pretty steep I just pause the cruise and the speed brake takes over. Once we are on level ground and at the speed I was cruising at I just re-engage the cruise and the speedbrake disengages. I am probably a touch heavier than you and heavier than with the other MS but it works wonderfully. Lastly, I recommend buying direct from Banks, about the same prices and better customer support. If you go through a jobber that's who has to support you; Banks really won't want to help you if you have a problem, they'll direct you to the jobber.

RE: Custom builds

DRV DRV will semi-custom build a 5er for you, per their website. We recently took delivery of our 2013 Mobile Suites 38RESB3 which had quite a few customized features, several such as carpet and paint from the Elite Suites. If you go to the website dedicated to DRV products, SOITC, you can do a search and see what others have had DRV do for them. Good folks to work with and I think a great product.

RE: traveling with pets

In the past, we have traveled with up to 4 German Shepherd Dogs while pulling a 5er. No room for all in the TV so some rode int the 5er. When we stopped at a rest area the dogs in the 5er were at the door ready to great us, tails wagging. When done at the rest area we would open the door and the dogs would jump in either the 5er or TV, depending on which one we wanted the dogs in. Pretty much told me they weren't upset with the ride. Didn't need to ride in the 5er myself or have my wife ride in it; we have different standards of comfort then dogs do. The only time one dog got sick in the 5er was when she was already sick and would have gotten sick anywhere. What I did do to improve the environment was to have either vents open, windows opened and have a portable dc fan to help move air around. I also had a remote temp gauge in the 5er so I could monitor the temps in the 5er. It took quite a while for the temps to warm up inside. We did this in weather with temps up to 85 degrees or so and as it did warm up made more frequent stops and made sure there was plenty of water available. 0 problems.

RE: Pin Box System

My first 2 5ers had the TrailAir pinbox. I had the Triglide system added a couple years ago to our 2007 Mobile Suites 36TK3. Both 5ers/Trailair systems worked quite well for the up and down motion and the Triglide system took care of most of the chucking. Going to the factory to have the Triglide installed I had to drive at about 35 - 45 mph because of the rotten roads; after the the install on the same interstate I had to remember how bad the roads were and slow down from 65 mph because the road was still bad but I could hardly feel it because of the Triglide smoothing out the chucking so well. Having the Trailair/Triglide installed at the factory for our on order MS 38RESB3 which should be here this August. So, I do recommend that system. Helps cushion the up and down motion and the chucking. Doesn't remove it all, but really smoooooths out the ride. Also, both MS's had/will have the Trailair Centerpoint system for the suspension which adds to the smooth ride for the 5er and TV. Good luck on your decision.

RE: Does your Trail Air look like this?

NothernLights, who are "they" that told you to defalte the airbag? A quick check of the Lippert site FAQ's reveals: Q. How do I hook and unhook from my truck? A. When hooking and unhooking, the main thing to keep in mind is to not over compensate for the oscillation of the lower jaw. You should hook and unhook without changing the air in the air spring. When unhooking from the trailer you can avoid "high pinning" by raising your coach just enough to take most of the weight off of the truck (even though the lower jaw is pushing down, you can take most of the weight off the truck). A good indicator of when the weight is off the truck is when the king pin plate on the lower jaw of the Trailair air ride pin box is parallel to the ground. At that point, then unlock the fifth wheel hitch and pull out. Sometimes you have to "pop" the jaws of your fifth wheel loose if they are in a bind by putting your truck in forward or reverse and stepping on the brake just enough to dislodge the jaw mechanism in your fifth wheel hitch. Be careful to not damage your landing gear on your coach. When you reconnect the truck to the fifth wheel, the lower jaw will be down approximately 1 1/2" in the front. The Trailair lower jaw is built with a front lip that will allow your fifth wheel to push against it as you back the truck under the trailer. Simply line up the pin and back under the trailer, the truck will push the lower jaw out of the way and the king pin will snap into the fifth wheel. Be sure to lock your fifth wheel and attach your safety brake cable as well as connect your electrical cable before you travel. Lots of good info when you go to the manufacture's website...Then you don't have to wait for someone to respond to you.

RE: TriGlide trip report

Here is some more info from Lippert: Tri Glide If you read down you will see this: "Three steel shafts are on either side of the lower jaw and swing inside a pivot. There are six zerks to grease every 1,000 to 1,500 miles. There are no rubber parts in the lower gliding jaw." I guess they forgot about the 3 inner zerks or they removed them? Whatever, the system realllly works well.

RE: TriGlide trip report

Don't know what TrailAir/Lippert is telling folks on the greasing interval for the 9 grease fittings, but I was told to grease it every thousand miles to keep it working properly.
