Where are you.. Scipio UT?
Every time I have stopped for gas on I-15, an attendant has told me of a pressing repair that MUST be done immediately. I always was told how honest Mormon folk were. Crock 'o******in my book. And my SIL is from a Mormon family.

RE: 12-13k Budget For Motorhome

DW and I are about convinced that we want a motorhome. Here is our plan, however, I wanted to consult with the experts first because I understand that plans vs reality are often two different things. So we want to plan for reality.
We own our TT, Dually, and Golf Cart outright. After we sell out the Truck, Trailer, and Cart, along with some savings, we are going to have a budget of about 12-13k for a coach.
I know that we will not be able to get a coach with a slide or a DP, but I would like to know if it reasonable to get a good 30 plus ft gasser for 7-10k and put an additional 2-3k in the coach to get it up to speed (tires, tune up, etc.) Looking at local prices I seems the year range we will be looking at is 1990-2000 depending on condition (seems condition drives the price more than the year)
Is this an unreasonable expectation and budget? Can I get amenities like auto leveling in this year range? We want a Queen walk around bed, split bath, dinnette and couch, a chair or two would also be nice. Any other caveat's recommendations? Any particular brand? ETC..
I will be replacing my DD with a vehicle that can be a toad, but that is a different conversation.
Thanks!
Jeremiah
I have an '02 Itasca w/all the upgrades and were I to offer to sell it I would start at the low BB of about 30K.
Times are tuff but I suspect you are pursuing a dream but I wish you luck.

RE: 2003 PaceArrow Dometic Refrigerator/re:12 volts

I posted a problem about my Dometic refrigerator had stopped working on the ride back from Myrtle Beach about 3 weeks ago. I had two helpful suggestions that said that I should check the batteries because it needed at least 12 volts to get it started. The batteries are only 5.8 amps apiece. Now I'm wondering why they are not on full charge of 6 volts as I just bought them one year ago. Is there a switch that I have to use that I am missing to keep it charging?
Go to Battery info.
for an excellent info article on the subject.

RE: Class A in this campground is to big with toad...

Good for you but I have to reason to push the maneuverability limits with a toad attached. Seen those that did than block the road to unhook at the site.....they really look foolish.
For an overnighter I always ask for a site that I can get into without unhooking but still, it only takes a couple of minutes to unhook/hook and time is cheap, paint expensive.
I went to a campground in Rapid City some years back. The check-in guy said he would go back and guide us in. I told him my wife was more than capable of directing me. He said he was required to do the guiding to make certain there would be no problems.
So, I followed his 'precise' directions and even after pointing out where a potential problem existed, he told me he had been doing this for a long time and had never had a problem.
So, to make a long story short, his 'directions' led me to a place where a post (marker) scraped the side of my rig to the tune of ~$3-5000. When I asked for their insurance info, I was told it was my responsibility.

RE: Newbie - 1st time towing Car on Tow Dolly - Tips?

Hi,
I am new to RVing and I just got a tow dolly. One thing I found out was that I need to leave as much slack as possible on the mag tail lights. When towing the Dolly just a few miles to get home They got disconnected.
Do you have any other suggetions?
Thanks in advanced!
Just make sure the RV stays ahead of the toad.

RE: Pioneer Museum in Minden Neb

We spent a day there last summer. The attractions are well worth a stop. We took the time to look at the CG, and were a bit shocked. It is an unmaintained gravel lot in very poor condition. It is surrounded by two motel buildings that look like something out of a "COPS" show prostitution sting, and a huge, abandoned restaurant. It was mid-summer, and not a single RV was parked in any site. Although a lot of signage indicated otherwise, there really wasn't much visual evidence to indicate that the whole mess (motel, diner & CG) wasn't abandoned long ago.
If the kitchen display from over the decades is still being shown, it is very interesting, even for us guys. Also, the display of cars & farm equip.
Overall, a fantastic display of America in the 1800's.

RE: Dingy

What's the simplest vehicle to use as the dingy. It can't be to small cause I'll have trouble clinbing in and out of it. A jeep may work but don't know if they can be towed and do they have to be a manual trans.
Thanks Jerry
I tow a '06 Jeep Liberty. It is an automatic trans. Pulls easy and rather light. Lotsa Space.

RE: how do you like your SuperSteer trac bar? F53

I just got my ss401 trac bar from Hendersons in Oregon. I plan on installing it this week.
The wind last year driving from Eastern Washington beat the hell out of me. My RV's back end was all over the place.
Anybody else use the same or similar setup with good results in windy conditions? My rv is in my signature line.
Interesting, you are a senior member yet you have only been on WA. according to your map. Anyway, I have had my Trac Bar for 8 years and am quite satisfied.

RE: Should you travel with a full tank of Gas?

Certainly. If you let it get below 1/2 full you may not be able to start the generator.
Yes,
Some intank fuel pumps depend on the gasoline in the tank to cool the pump. If you travel with tank below half full the pump runs too hot and will eventually fail.

RE: Topping off batteries

Brian is absolutely correct.
I suspect your charger is overcharging your batteries causing them to boil the water. My MH sits for six months at home and then another six months at our rv park in Oregon. I typically only add water to the house batteries (4ea 6v) about twice a year and then it's only two or three ounces for each cell. As long as the water covers the cells, I leave it alone.
Hope this helps
Ron
I put 2-6V in series when I bought my '02 Suncruiser. For the next few years I found myself replacing the batts every year. I had noticed that my voltmeter (Radio Shack cheapie) was reading 15.4 when driving. I mentioned this to a number of mechanics and all of them said that was ok. Well, I was buying a new set of batts every 2 years now so back to the mechanics. They still gave my system their blessing.
So, I went to a shop that specialized in charging systems. He immediately said the regulator was set to high.
It seems that the regulator in this alternator had a plug in setup. This one was setup for 15.2 whereas it shud be set to 14.8. So he ordered a new one. It is now charging properly.

RE: Three new tattoos

Well tomorrow is the day the Dr's set up the positions of the radiation guns and put permanent markers on with tattoo gun and schedule the first treatment. I think I'll ask for three different colors.
I'm not relly making light of this, I'm really scared and worried. I want to thank those who have corresponded with me and made other posts about this and how well it has worked, hasn't helped. I'm stilled really scared. Tens of thousands(maybe hundred of thousands) of miles under water, lots of contacts and silent running, but that was nothing in comparison to this. Well in nine weeks it'll all be over I hope, thanks again for the encouragement from all you guys that survived prostate cancer.
If this is for prostate cancer treatment, fear not. I had radiation therapy + seeds 18 years ago. Last PSA test a month ago was 0, zero, nil, none, nada, zilch!

RE: Are Camp Grounds Really that Safe?

Hi:
Have you ever wondered if Camp Grounds are really that safe for kids & family’s , Have you ever experienced a un-safe Camp Ground?
Did you ever have to leave a Camp Ground because you felt it was
un- safe, or you felt un-safe there!
Tell all of us about it, and which Camp Grounds……
Lenny H
We have been in over 600 campgrounds in 10 years of travel. Only twice have we felt unsafe, once in Canada and once in the states (I forget where). I do have a form of protection. Plus the BW when she is mad. :B

RE: What would you do?

We bought our 2002 Suncruiser in 2003. We had looked at a number of gas, diesel, 5er, TT Models. One question we were asked why a gasser when a diesel would get us 200,000 miles PLUS. I would respond that a diesel might last 200,000 miles but it was highly unlikely that we would.
After 9 years of enjoyable travel, we will, sadly, wrap it up this year. We put 90,000 miles on our gasser. Very enjoyable miles for sure. It runs as good as it did when we bought it. Doesn't burn oil other than 1 Qt/5000 miles on level ground and <2Qt /5000 miles in mountain. My grease/oil services cost ~$40 every 5000 mi. whereas diesels cost much more.
So, why buy a smelly, $$ to service diesel, that will last 200,000 miles when I will not.
But if $$ is no object, and you want a softer quieter ride, go Cat or Cummins.

RE: CB antenna mounting

Last question of the day: other than drilling through the roof..what do you all do to mount your CB antenna? Thanks, Lee
I mounted my 33' collapsible vertical on the ladder. I then ran the coax underneath the rig and up through a coax sized hole near the right side sidewall, near the passenger foot. Then under the carpet to the vicinity. Non-obtrusive and easy to take care of.

RE: Tires

Has any one installed Hercules H series tires on your motorhome? I've met a couple different rv'ers whom give them good recommendations.
I have been using them for 4 years. OK by me.
Just stay AWAY FROM all gas stations in southern Utah on I15. Friggin crooks every, one.

RE: Another water softener question

A while ago I posted about my On the go water softener and came to the conclusion after reading the advice I got that I had dumped out the resin. I bought new resin and installed it per instructions and still have hard water according to my test strips. I was to the understanding that I wouldn't have to recharge it with salt until later. Should I recharge it with salt now or what do you people think I am doing wrong.
Wait a while until it does its work. I have had mine for 9 years and love it.

RE: 6 Volt Battery Info

I think I may have a 6 volt battery going bad. I have read that a 12 V battery, that is fully charged, will read around 12.4 to 12.5 V on a meter. Is there a similar specification for a fully charged 6 volt battery? My current reading is around 5.6 V. I intend to check the hydrometer readings later in the week when I get some time. When plugged into shore power, my monitor in the coach shows batteries as fully charged. When I unplug, it drops to about 2 bars (out of a possible 4). I believe this battery is one of two house batteries. I am a novice and appreciate your advice. This is a 99 M35 Allegro Bus.
Thanks!
Doug
Tke voltage developed in a 12/6vdc Lead Acid Cell storage battery is due to a chemical reaction well known to chemists and virtually inalterable. The actual voltage is closer to 12.6/6.3. Any other reading on a fully charged battery (after the surface charge is dissipatedated) indicates an anomaly.
For our purposes (RV applications) These anomalies fall into
very few categories:
1.) Bad/inaccurate test meter
2.) Weak Battery if too low or overcharged if too high.
3.) Shorted cell.
