RE: 2000 Dodge 5.9 Cummins programmer

Add an Edge EZ and RV275 injectors (cheap), you can thank me later. :B
I did those mods on my 2002 truck, it worked excellent.

RE: Do I need a diesel?

Find a clean, lower mileage 8.1 with Allison trans and don't look back. You will save THOUSANDS!
Maybe, but 8.1L powered pickups are rare as hens teeth in Sask, Canada where he and I are from.
I say for a 7500 GVW RV, an EcoBoost F150 would do a fine job with that trailer. A gas V8 truck would do an OK job, and a 3/4 ton diesel will pull it very effortlessly.
To summarize, in my opinion:
- Good - V8 powered half ton
- Better - EcoBoost powered F150
- Best - Diesel 3/4 ton
What you buy is up to you and your budget.

RE: Why does the market demand Diesel??

Top Ram Hemi tow rating is 13,860# in a 3500 SRW reg cab 4x2. If you go DRW, you have to get the diesel.

RE: Why does the market demand Diesel??

I think the main reason diesel is so popular for towing heavy loads is because they just do a much better job. The top gasser makes what...450tq? The top diesel - 850tq, and at much lower engine speeds which means less fuel burned, and less engine wear.
That makes for a much more relaxed towing experience, at least for the big loads. For 8000 - 10,000# and under a gasser can be a good choice, and they certainly have their place.
But, when you limit the parameters to towing heavy loads, diesel is king -- at least for now.

RE: K&N Filters

I had one in my previous Dodge/Cummins, truck came with it. I noticed it let fine dust through, as evident by the fine coating of dust in the intake plumbing upstream of the filter. I cleaned the tubing and filter, reinstalled the k&n, then rechecked a few months later. More fine dust being let through the filter which was washed and reoiled as per the instructions. No more k&n for me.

I've seen it happen twice...well, not as in I witnessed the break, but two vehicles in garages with no apparent cause lost windows.

RE: 2002 Chevy 1500HD/gearing question

Yes, but you don`t get Lock Up in 2nd gear, and that will run up the trans temps!
Sorry, incorrect. GM transmissions have offered TC lockup in 2nd gear at least since the late 90s. My 97 K2500 would do it, that truck wasn't even equipped with Tow/Haul.
Put Lena in T/H, put the hammer down, 2nd gear at 4k rmps and the TC locks up tighter than a drum. And she pulls like a freight train.
Never heard of any transmission locking up in 2nd, but appearantly GM programmed thier transmissions to do this. you learn something new everyday!
The48re locks up in 2nd as well, but does so only if t/h is engaged.
Now you've learned two things! :B

Not needed at all with stock engine programming. If you must have a way to read it, use something like the Edge Insight already mentioned.

RE: Getting 2013 1500 Silverado Today, oil consumption questions

A quick google search says it either is an issue, or at least was an issue, and that it's linked to the AFM system.
A quick google search will find instances of "excessive" oil consumption for every motor made.
Maybe, but...
Did you read the link I posted? How about the tsb gm issued about excessive oil consumption? Or are you shooting from the hip with zero facts? There is, or was, a legitimate issue according to GM.

RE: 2000 Chevy Silverado Crew Cab Opinion

Its a gas engine truck.
How do I know this?
1. There's no soot in tail pipe
2. The 6.5L diesels had two holes (air intakes) in the bumper, one on either side of the front licence plate to aid with cooling.

RE: Opinions on Diesel Chips

Depends on the engine. Cummins marine has the same 5.9L as mine rated at ~480hp from the factory.
For some other diesels, I would agree that tuning them is akin to lighting the candle at the other end too. Mine has been tuned for 4 years with no issues at all.I would never buy a used vehicle if there were a possibility of the previous owner using a tuner/programmer/etc.
Increasing the horsepower of an engine, especially past the manufacturer's original design, puts more stress on everything and reduces its useful life.

RE: 2011 f350 transmission pump leak

I wonder if by chance you were towing in overdrive. The reason I ask is I had to
replace the pump seal in my 2001 F350 also. Found out thatif you do this the trany
will over heat the oil because there is not enough flow to the cooler.
Apples to oranges. The trans in your 2001 has little in common with a 2011.
The new ones are computer controlled, and generally recommend towing in overdrive with tow/haul activated.

The 4.7 isnt available in a megacab. Hemi or diesel only. Something is amiss with the info. Either the truck is crewcab/quadcab, or it has a hemi.

RE: F250/350 pin weight question

LOL!!
Well if you look correctly, Ram didn't offer a "1 ton" AKA 3500 SRW in 2001, it was accomplished by getting a 2500 with Camper and tow package. This included 1 ton springs and sway bar.
So while many on this site seem to need to put Air Bags on their 3500 SRW to haul their 11K fiver, this Ram is still easily riding on factory stock suspension!
http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z467/rhagfo/IMG_0466_zpscb5fccde.jpg height=400 width=600
I've ridden in those old Rams and I could've sworn they didn't have any suspension.:)
I drove one for years, and they almost don't! You can put a heck of a load on them before they squat though!

RE: Durango just crapped out - should I get another??

What about the rear end? - if I do decide to get a different one would the rear end that is better for pulling make me see red at the pump? Mostly the Durango is just a daily driver - it tows maybe 4 times a year. Would be nice to have a more torque but I'm not willing to pay too much for it.
Thanks much

RE: Opinions on Diesel Chips

I like tuned diesels so much, I have 2 tuners for mine. They add a ton of power, haven't melted or damaged anything in thr 4 years I have been using them either. Common sense applies.
That said, they will not, and do not add any mpg. Thats a lie spread by people who don't know any better, or, those that know better, but are in business to sell tuners. There is no decrease in mpg either in my experience, even with all the added power.
The biggest issue for you is warranty. Tune your truck, and have an engine problem there after - tuner related or not, and your warranty will be useless/voided in all likelihood.
Up to you.
Not true. On the newer trucks running DPFs they dump raw diesel fuel into the exhaust during regen. Like throwing $$ out the window... Simply deleting the DPF regen process and not even cranking up the power levels will yeild improved MPG.
The downside of course as many have stated is your powertrain warranty is now gone. THe new ECMs track any changes so going back to stock is not going to get you anywhere if you have a problem and want to take it back to the dealer. Its a tradeoff where you have to consider is the improved mileage and power worth the cost of loosing your powertrain warranty.
THe other argument to this is many of the problems you hear about on the newer diesels are emissions related. One could argue that an emissions deleted truck should be more reliable than a stock truck. Shutting off the EGR, letting the engine breathe better, and running at lower EGT's have all got to be good things, right?
Well, if you turn off the regen and don't delete the DPF, you're not going to run very long before the DPF plugs up, especially with added soot from added fuel & altered fuel timing. I do agree that if you remove the DPF AND tune the engine, you might increase mpg, but that's not what I was talking about. I was referring to ONLY adding tuning.
