RE: Brake problem

Taking the unit to a local Workhorse dealer may give the dealer reason to void the warranty. If the dealer who sold the motor home to the OP gave a warranty I can understand he probably wouldn't pay for the repair. But no way can I see how he could justify voiding the warranty because a Workhorse dealer repaired a Workhorse chassis.

Drum or disk, it doesn't make a lot of difference when replacing the inner seal. The caliper will have to come off to pull the disk but that isn't a big deal. Unless you have an extremely bad leak or the gear lube is low it won't hurt to drive your motor home. Personally I would go for the Workhorse dealer, both because it is closer and because they will be a lot more familiar with the repair and should have the seals in stock.

Chrome over pits will look like chromed pits. The metal has to have a polished surface to end up with a decent chrome job. Painting would be a better alternative, the pits can be filled or cleaned up if they aren't very deep.

There are 2 seals for each end of the axle. The outer can be changed without even removing the wheels but probably won't leak inside the drum. To change the inner seal the wheels, axle cover, axle, lock nuts and ring, bearings and drum have to come off. It really doesn't matter then if it is the inner axle seal leaking or a bad wheel cylinder, the same parts have to come off to change either. Good time to have them give you an idea of the brake shoe wear also, they will be hanging right out there.

Brake fluid is thin like water and has a relatively faint smell; rub it between your finger and thumb and it isn't really slippery, just wet. Gear lube is far thicker than engine oil and has a VERY strong smell, it is very slippery.

I don't know what it is like in NH but around MI we have weigh masters and weigh stations who love overweight vehicles and then generally find other items to ticket as well. It isn't hard to rack up $2000 in tickets on a commercial vehicle. If you are the owner you don't do anything to draw attention to your truck, you make sure everything works and you aren't overloaded. My thought is the service manager is blowing smoke.

Sorry, just was wondering about the mentality of the person that has to ask if they should fix their LP leak. A better question is, how do I fix my LP leak. That is actually the question that was asked: Is there something else I can try besides pipe dope? Do I need to replace the entire unit?

This motor has 2 timing gauges 1 on toward the top which is the one that I could get the reading off and 1 is toward the bottom. I could not get any reading from the bottom markings. The bottom markings will work off the #5 or #8 plug wire. My entire issue with this motor is that it want to run @ 230F or more, I put a new 5 core radiator, extreme duty clutch on the fan, put a 160F thermostat in it and Flow Kooler water pump on it. I am 99% sure I have all the air out as I put the MH on a hill with the front on the up side and filled the radiator while the motor was running. Because of the v belt and serpentine setups there are standard and reverse flow water pumps and fan clutches, fans. Naturally the correct rotation parts are a must. Also a complete, in good condition fan shroud is the only way the fan will draw air thru the radiator. Does the clutch engage, good air flow thru the radiator? On a stock engine the sensor in the LH head is for the IP gauge.

My vintage (all metal) conversion has a factory fire alarm with 2 sensors installed in rear engine compartment. It works regardless being over 30 years old. I wonder why those alarms are thing of the past? A conversion based on a transit or intercity bus? They probably still are installed on new units for the same use. Lots of passengers means lots of liability. Liability has a lot to do with features like that.

Harbor freight was NOT mentioned in the OP's post, and NOT mentioned in the "New York Times" article the OP said nothing about buying from HF, He merely mention the times article and the predication that Production costs would drop to $2 per watt, NOT retail panel prices, lets keep the discussion on track and quit bashing a company that was NOT referenced in the news article What??? How is discussing quality when discussing price getting off track? I only mentioned HF because they are the only Chinese panels I could actually look at, not just a picture and description. Most of my post compared general Chinese (that WAS mentioned) manufacturing quality and if it would be acceptable for an item that should be designed for a 20+ year life expectancy. And my only "bash" to HF was to say the quality wasn't comparable to an item that cost at least three times as much, I posted the price I paid for my panels. If you are going to suddenly enforce a rule that if it wasn't mentioned in the OP you can't discuss it in a thread on this forum, good luck, you have your work cut out for you. Some of these threads wander worse than a snake.

About $6 a watt but that was a lot of years ago. They are Seimens which got out of the solar panel business. Solar panels are exposed to a lot of harsh conditions. I'm not impressed with Chinese quality overall. They sell cheap because they make things cheap. I've looked at the panels at Harbor Freight, there is no comparison to the ones I have. Good panels are guaranteed for a percentage of the rated output for 20-25 years. On an rv that might not last 20 years it probably won't matter. But even at $2 a watt if they die in 5 years it is an expensive failure. They are long term investments to me, so far I haven't seen Chinese long term quality.

Hmmmm...I had no idea that they were that cheap. How difficult are they to install? I'm reasonably handy. Most 30 amp are nothing more than a DPDT relay with a time delay, 50 amp will have 3 sets of contacts, it's an easy install. Hook your shore power cord to the normally closed contacts, the generator feed to the normally open contacts. The common contacts feed the breaker box. If the time delay is not hooked up it goes between the hot NO contact and coil, this gives the generator time to stabilize before the contacts close.

And those claiming that this picture is a fake hardly deserve a response. That's the stupidest remark to a safety post I have seen on this forum. Really? In your OP you stated it was venting really hard out of a 1/2" tube. That apparently means something different to you and me. A couple of yeas ago I just had my tank filled. When I opened the main valve it leaked. These valves seal open and closed. I couldn't find a seal kit so I had to change the valve. I waited for a windy day, took it out back, pulled the line and opened the valve, walked to the house and back. In way less than 10 minutes it was empty. The tank you saw was venting, it might have been very loud because it was between 2 solid surfaces but if it was still venting the next morning it was venting at a normal rate. We go by descriptions when you post, we aren't there to actually see and hear. When I see a picture of a frozen tank and a right angle brass fitting with no frost I wonder. The brass fitting is the restriction to flow, both because it is a right angle and the smallest inner diameter. With a large flow it should be frozen. It is essentially a venturi and a venturi is cooled by expansion to atmospheric pressure. I go by what you write, what I have learned, and what my experience tells me will happen. I know there is over 100 psi in a propane tank at 70º. If you haven't heard a fairly high pressure gas leak I understand the noise is unbelievable. But I have, and not just when I drained my tank, that's why I walked away. So your description presents an entirely different scenario to me than what you actually encountered, it was still venting the next day. I went by what you wrote at the time, the picture you posted and my experience. You might think the remarks to a safety post were stupid, I think the info received didn't reflect the actual situation, I came to a conclusion based on your original info. Give us good info for a good conclusion.

I've scattered my share of engines, never one in a motor home. Usually the failure point was the big end of the connecting rod. It's never pretty or clean when it happens, just the stored energy from the rotating assembly means lots of destruction.

Anything abrasive will clean it, Scotchbrite, sandpaper, wire brush. You only need bright metal, the terminal is lead and it is easy to under size them if you are too aggressive or use a coarse grit. Grease or a terminal sealer will slow new corrosion. You might as well do both terminals and the ground and hot where they are attached, the battery will have more capacity, charge faster, and last longer with clean connections.

As long as you have 2 weeks search on 'rv transfer switch', I got a bunch of hits. Normally PPL has close to the best prices, I use them for comparison a lot. They ship quickly and it isn't as far from them to CA is it is to me, I get the order in 3 or 4 days. 30 amp transfer switch.

After a second look, the picture is fake! Note that while the tank is purportedly coated with ice, the hose fitting is not even damp? Does make you wonder, doesn't it? How would an internal valve work? It would have to be electric, I have never seen wires thru a tank, sealing would be real problem. Why vent liquid propane? A caplug isn't a seal, it protects the ends of the pipe and keeps dirt out. It won't hold 10 lbs. of pressure much less the pressure from the tank. If the tank was truly open to the air overnight your problems are over. It only takes a few minutes, definitely not 15 minutes, for them to empty thru the vapor valve, liquid thru a 1/2" tube would be much faster There isn't much chance of a problem now unless you stick a match in the tube.

Please expound on fiberglass body work and paint prep. The rv industry uses a lot of variations of fiberglass. If it is gel coated sand it smooth with progressively finer grades of paper. Try not to break thru the gel coat layer (which can be hard as the thickness usually varies a lot). If there are any glass fibers exposed or it isn't gel coated I would use a primer sealer then a heavy coat of surfacing primer. Sand, look really hard for defects before deciding if you should top coat or another primer coat. The surfacing primer will build fast and cover tiny defects like the exposed glass fibers. Cleaning it well between coats is more important than anything, be dilligent. You can spend days getting a perfect surface, if it is full of dust and dirt it will look terrible.
