RE: switching to a pop up again
Had a Jayco PUP, then a TT now back to another Jayco PUP. Will be picking it up this week. Its a new 2012 sport 10FD. It fits the bill just fine for us. We wanted just a simple trailer with no water heater and just a fridge and heat. I liked a lot of the upgrades Jayco did this year in the select series except for the power roof, I wish you could have taken off that option.
For the 3-6 nights/year that we go the PUP will work out just fine with out a lot of $ just sitting. At some point we will go back to a 5th of TT.
In general I think most of the PUP's are a******shoot, most of the parts and concepts are the same. I have had good luck with Jayco service so thats the way we went a second time.
RE: 2011 Jayco j141 Value
Congratulations on the purchase. The next couple of weeks will go by so slowly now.
Thanks
Its our third camper now, so ot so big deal as the fist one was. You know the first one is always the best!
Heck they are talking another 10 inches of snow tonight, will be lucky to get out by July!!!
RE: Thinking of Down Sizing from a TT
We did the deed this weekend. A new 2012 PUP is on its way. Like I said back a few pages going to miss the TT in some respects but this is going to work out much better for us now.
Ended up with a new Jayco 10FD, looked at a few used PUPS and to be honest for $2,000 more we got a new one, its still way cheaper than the the TT. For $6,500 if it does not get used all that much I'm not going to really care. With any luck the kids will like it and we can just give it to them at some point.
RE: 2011 Jayco j141 Value
I was think the Bathroom was a standard option, after I click that its closer.
I know many want to click on all the options and don't read what NADA says about standard options.
As an example with some TT's you can not buy the TT without A/C is a standard option. But NADA will let select the A/C even though they tell you not to.
Anyway we are closer now, thanks for looking at it.
Now I just need to decide if I really want a HW:)
2011 Jayco j141 Value
I'm having a hard time with comming up with a value for this rig. I know NADA can be a******shoot with older pop-ups but is it close for new ones? Thay are asking $11,000 OBO.
Craigslist add
NADA Retail Value $9,120

RE: Casette Toilets
I have been looking at these, they are about the 1/4 of the price of the casette type and hold about the same amount.
Porta Potti Curve
RE: Just venting
We are in the same boat of sorts. We have older kids who are in sports/band/church and that just keeps us busy.
We have our reservations all booked for this year, we are making two camping trips for a total of 7 nights, that was until we got the got the summer soccer schedule this week, down to 6 nights now.
We sold our TT at the end of last year. I could not justify the cost of the unit just sitting and not being used. Paying for insurance, dry rot tires, dealing with storing out in the snow and ice and just the plain upkeep it takes to keep it up to par was not worth it to us. It was a nice TT that I wanted to keep looking new.
We are going back to a PUP thats cheap and fits in our second garage, if it gets used great if it does not I'm not going to care.
I would also be open to a ratted out old 1970's TT that I can gut and redo, I'm a wood worker and enjoy that type of work. It would be simple, just heat, a few beds and a room for a potty!
I fiqure we have another 4-5 years of this schedule, will look at somthing after that.
Its a tough choice, we waffle back and forth all the time with it. Been camping in some form for 20+ years, back to the basics of sorts.
Hardwall Bathroom
In our quest to move back to a PUP the DW would prefer a hard sided biffy.
This is my plan as of today, find one that exist already in a HW type of camper. Or going to build my own, it could be a room build around a porti potty (a higer potty) or build around an exiting casset type.
My current thinking is that I would make up some kind of frame with 1x2's and foam and cover it with formica that matches the rest of the rig. Might as well make it match the rest ot the camper and make it light and cheesy.
I'm a wood worker so building its not an issue, anybody done a similar mod of sorts. No need to reinvet the wheel if its been done before. It seems simple enough in my little mind anyway.
We have some new 2012 Jayco 10FD's around here that are not priced to bad if I can;t come up with a used one that make sense. Nothing more fun than taking a sawzal to a new camper:)
I suppose I could go back to the TT:)
PUP Awning worth the darn?
Anybody have a PUP awning worth the darn? As we are going back to a PUP from our TT one of the things I'm going to miss is the awning.
We had a Jayco PUP before with the bag awning and to be honest it was more trouble than it was worth. The part that go me the most was the time it took to take down whenever the wind came up + you darn near need a step ladder or crank the roof down to roll it back up.
I know its a lot to ask of PUP, its like putting a 10' flag on a 1/2 piece of conduit.
We do use a screen tent, maybe will just use that and forget the awning.
Thoughts?

Jeremiah
When our kids are gone it will a tough choice. Hope to be able to go more and thats going to mean either a 5th wheel/truck camper/class C etc. Have to be able to pull a boat!
RE: Thinking of Down Sizing from a TT
Im going to get blasted, but here we go.
We decided to sell the TT and go back to a PUP. We paid cash for the TT and Truck, I hate loans. Many say keep it if its paid for, I'm not in that camp if I have a good amount of dollars into something that's not getting used enough its gone.
The following is the reasons we sold the TT and going back to a PUP:
1. Two teenage kids who are in sports/band/church full time = 2-3 weekened trips if we are lucky.
2. Upkeep on a TT that just sits outside in the snow and sun just takes time to upkeep if you want to keep it looking decent.
3. If its has any value you want to insure it.
4. Went thru 3 sets of tires do to dry rot, set of 4.
5. I have indoor space for a PUP, my garage door is to short to fit the TT.
6. Weight distribution hitches, electric brakes can be a pain in a$$.
7. Covers seem to last about 3-4 years then they are junk.
8. My little boat fits on the roof of a PUP.
9. Some of our favorite sites are not TT friendly.
Now don't get me wrong we enjoyed the TT, when the kids are gone we may go back to something hard sided, I will also buid a garage to fit it in. We had a PUP in the past, they can be/are a pain in other ways, its all a give and take. For this stage in our lives the PUP will work for a next 5-6 years.
It took us 2 years of talking about it before we made the switch, matter of fact we are looking now for a PUP!
Good luck
RE: 2004 Fleetwood Sequoia? Good buy? Parts?
mbwood, you hit the nail on the head for us as well. When I'm looking at this PUP I have the same feeling, I can buy a used granted its not in the same class for the same $. That's the route I will go if nothing sticks out in the next month or two.
We are having a hard time deciding what to do. On one hand, we are thinking the idea of the pop up is great. But on another, we are thinking of just tent camping, saving the $5000-6000, registration, insurance and upkeep costs. Especially since we are looking at something basic. We may just do the tent thing for a while and then decide if we want to invest in the pop up or not. There's no rush. At least not this minute..lol
A person can find a decent say 8-10 year old simple rig for around $3,000, Registration is next to nothing and I don't think I would even bother to insure it at that point. My auto insurance covers it while in tow, thats good enough. The bigest pain with with any of this stuff is looking at it sit if you don't use it much, that just bugs me for some reason and I have some land and garage space to hide it.
I have come full circle in many regards, call it growing up by my mid 40's. I don't care if its to shiny and new, used with a few dents is just fine, less worry and more fun.
I tried to get the wife to let me set up a tent on our 8x12 flat bed trailer, lets just say that did not go over so well, I said it was tent trailer, she did not agree:)

RE: Squeezing the PUP into the shop
Question, may I ask what you mean by "sagging in the roof line"? I would assume the roof does not care if its up, down or in the middle?
RE: Getting back into PUP'S......
Jim
We are also going back to a PUP this year as well from a TT. The TT is/was nice but for the space/time/money it takes and the few time a year we can make it (busy kids) we going back. We had a PUP, I grew up camping in a PUP and as strange as it sounds I miss it.
In regards to your question about Starcraft I could be wrong but I thought I read they are made by Jayco now. we had a Jayco PUP last time, it served us well.
RE: 2004 Fleetwood Sequoia? Good buy? Parts?
Well I'm handy enough, lucky to have a metal and wood shop. So should be ok in bending up what I need if I have to.
I did note the same when I bought our last trailer when the manual was a big pile of manuals from other manufactures!
So I guess you are right, as long as I don't ding up the body parts I should be good to go.
RE: 2004 Fleetwood Sequoia? Good buy? Parts?
bondebond, thanks for the well thouhgt out post.
I did find it kind of funny as well in regards to the listing price, maybe they added the price of the A/C, who knows. I kind of wish it did not have A/C to be honest.
The trailer must have some miles on it if they replaced the brake pads, most of the time I see the orginals pads in.
The good news is that is close to my home so I'm willing to give it a look, if I had to drive across town I would not.
Thanks
Jay
