RE: What Did You Do For Your Travel Trailer Recently?

I made my trailer happy today. By replacing the operator and torque bar bearings on three windows and was able to remove the screws with flat washers that was holding them closed. Tomorrow a little bit of cleaning then start working on replacing the rusted kitchen sink. Jim

RE: Bacon grease

Thanks everyone for the replies. I have home canned green beans with bacon grease in it every once in a while. The doctors frown upon that now a days. I remember my mom and her mom having butter lettuce with tomatoes and hot bacon grease on it also. Now the bacon grease and bread I had not heard of before. I might try and sneak that in sometime the doctor isn't watching. I do the eggs and bacon every weekend. Normally the left over bacon grease is used on the fried or scrambled eggs with cornbread crumbled into the eggs. Yummy. Thanks Jim

Bacon grease

so what does everyone do with their bacon grease from this morning bacon for breakfast? Here at the house I save it in a big thick coffee cup but I'm not sure if I want to do that while camping. I can always let it harden up and then throw it out with the trash? So sorry but precooked bacon is not an option....yuck! Thanks Jim

RE: Here's a pretty clever picnic table ilumination idea......

I like the idea. I am wondering if you put yellow or oranges lights wouldn't that cut down on the bugs? Kind of like the exterior door lights that are yellow.

RE: Going to AK - Should I carry a full spare tire and rim?

I would have a couple of spares for each vehicle. My folks and us kids made three trips to Alaska driving the Alcan Highway going up and coming back to the lower 48 and each and everytime my dad would have a couple of flat tires. Now this was back in the 70's before they started paving a lot of the highway. So it might be in a lot better shape than back then. I remember in someplaces it was very tight getting vehicles to pass because of how narrow the road was. Like I say though that was back in the 70's and I'm sure things have changed a lot since then. Have fun while your there and don't forget the misquito repelent. :-) Jim

Tire question.

My 1971 Terry TT came with no spare tire. The size of the tire is a P205/75 R15 and it has 5 lugnuts. Is this enough information to get a wheel and tire with or will they need to see one of the tires? Thanks Jim

RE: Snow Towing Tricks

Glad you got the trailer home in one piece, but you have to love the fact that we are finally getting some moisture. You are totally right. It has been a long time coming. We are suppose to get some more on Sunday. I sure hope they are correct. Jim

RE: Snow Towing Tricks

Thanks everyone, it was at a friends house who was replacing both axles (long story) and he doesn't have a place to store it overnight without catching a lot of flack from a neighbor. Here is a pic of the truck and trailer after getting new axles yesterday. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b243/jimb63/snowytrailer_zpsf32ec25d.jpg I hope the snow goes ahead and melts. It is suppose to snow again Sunday. Plus it looks like I might need bigger tires also. Jim

RE: Snow Towing Tricks

Yes I agree I should have probably chained up. Which brings up 1 of 2 more questions. What kind of chains do you all use? I sure don't want to beat the******out of my truck. And how do you go about washing under the trailer Is it just spraying water from the garden hose at the house or do you take it to the car wash? Thanks Jim

RE: Snow Towing Tricks

Thanks for all the quick replies. It was flat land driving with a couple of hills which I went over before the roads got really slick. Ok so I was going really slow (I can tell that from all of the one finger waves I was getting :-) ). I will remember to use the flashers next time. I did take and reduce the brake control on the trailer so I think that was fine, or at least I couldn't feel the little jerk as if the trailer brakes were engaging. Wow all winter we have had very little snow. We just had the good snow fall last night, it is supposed to snow again tomorrow night and then on Saturday again. Sure will be nice to get some moisture in the ground finally. Thanks Jim

Snow Towing Tricks

So I picked up my trailer yesterday just as it was starting to snow. It took me 2 hours to go less than 10 miles (in town roads) due to icey/snow packed roads. Trailer and truck did well but I was as nervouse as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs (ha ha). For those of you who do this on a regular basis is there any tricks to keep control of the trailer on ice and snow? I had eased off of the trailer brakes for the conditions. And hats off to you who do pull trailers in the snow. Thanks Jim

RE: steep grades

So what would you do if you were in your lowest gear and was still gaining speed going downhill? Could this have been corrected at the top of the hill by gearing down into 1st or 2nd? I am ony asking because I will be going into the mountains more this summer pulling my trailer. Thanks Jim

RE: Do axles need to replaced because of age? What else?

Hi I have a 1971 Holiday Rambler It has the original axles and split rim, and I have been thinking about upgrade. I found on craigslist, "2 camper axles with electric brakes , tires and springs off a 2002 28ft camper i am looking for 500. obo." I was wondering if this would be a good thing to look into or not. If it is a good I have no clue if the price is reasonable. Thanks for the advice in advance. I was quoted here in Colorado around $275 each and they are rated for 3500 pounds and they are dextor axles. So 500 for 2 axles sound good to me. You do need to make sure the length of his axles are the same as yours. Hope this helps you out some. Jim

RE: Do axles need to replaced because of age? What else?

Thought I would give my experience. I had a 1969 Coachman. The brakes and bearings parts were readily available. I just bought a 1971 Terry. Neither the trailer brake parts or bearings are available anymore. So I will be putting on new dual axles, so like everyone else has said age isn't really the deciding factor. Oh and on both trailer all appliances worked exept the oven :-). Have fun with your new to you trailer, I really like the 1970's trailer. Jim

RE: Replacing vinyl flooring 1971 Terry (Updated)

Well a friend and I worked our tails off and we got the flooring done. Here are a few pictures from today. This is the green floor before we started. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b243/jimb63/greenfloor_zpsf9455afc.jpg This is the floor with the barrier covering the floor. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b243/jimb63/before_zpsbca661e5.jpg This is showing the kitchen area and the bathroom in the background. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b243/jimb63/hallway_zps6bfa702f.jpg And this is showing the bathroom. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b243/jimb63/bathroom_zps0d3d28fc.jpg This is all laminate floating floor. Hopefully it will hold up well for a few years. Well tomorrow is to replace the tail light and clearane lights and hopefully put my new propane tanks and regulator on. Thanks Jim
