Test drove a new Chevy D/A Dually today

Oh My....what a truck.
I wanted to post something about the experience, but I can't think of the words. It just felt right, Huge TQ, yet smooth delivery, like a freight train.. the power just rolls on pulling harder and harder...
My V10 pulls hard.. but it was a totally different type of pull...
The experience was a nice one and I totally understand why folks want diesels, especially like that one.
My V10 puts a grin on my face when 400 lb ft of torque are pulling on the truck... but 765 lb ft of torque... oh, that grin is a bit wider :)..

Casita and Scamp would actually be extreamly viable choices. There are many many many people successfully towing these small trailers with minivans and similar vehicles.

1) measure the trailer coupler from the ground to the top of the coupler while the trailer is sitting level and unhitched.
2) the unloaded hitch head should be positioned so that the ball is about 1 inch above the coupler height that you obtained in #1
Get the measuring tape out and get us some measurements and we can more accurately help you. These hitches need to be dialed in not just eyeballed in.

The new shop found the ball joints were too tight, not too loose, which I guess is more common (I think?). Anyway, the ball joints are being replaced this morning. Cross your fingers.
Hmmmmmm in 40 years of automotive work I have never heard of too tight of ball joints? :h Wear makes them loose and then you have play in suspension and steering components.

I have a Tekonsha Voyager... I am very well pleased with it. Like the other poster said, it hasn't burnt up or destroyed itself. If it did, I would probably buy another one.
I have trusted pendulum based proportional brake controls for years and will continue to do so... I understand how the master cylinder brake controls work, also I understand the Wii based inertia sensors in the Prodigy work (in principle, not as an engineer). I had an Original Primus and was pleased with the performance of this control, it was just not nearly as easy to use as the Voyager.
Quite frankly I like the simplicity of the single LED interface on my Voyager. If I see Green, I have a good connection, as I brake the light changes from green to orange to red as power is sent proportionally from the control to the Trailer. I love how this brake control performs, setting the level so that the trailer leads the TV is super EASY no boost button to push (Did I press it once, or twice?) No confusing display to send me messages, just a light out of the corner of my eye confirming to me the performance of the control.
I have not been convinced of the superior performance of the Prodigy triplets (P2, P3, and Primus IQ), other than the self leveling, I see no practical performance advantage over the Voyager, except for the display, which I personally do not prefer.
I am not tapping into my brake lines so MaxBrake, or BrakeSmart etc. is not an option to me. I do not dispute the performance, many testimonies attest the fact that they are good performing controls. I simply have a fundamental distain for modifying the hydraulic braking system of my vehicle. Maybe that will change at some point in the future for me, probably not.
That said, if I were buying a new aftermarket brake control they would be in this order.
Note: This is simply my preference.
1) Tekonsha Voyager
2) Tekonsha Prodigy P3
3) Tekonsha Prodigy p2
4) Tekonsha Primus IQ (really a rebadged Prodigy 1)

I think that a few well placed mods will make your truck into a real beast.
I would look into turbo charging that motor. There are several forums across the net that would be able to provide great direction on adding a turbo. I think that Banks made/makes a kit for the 6.2.
You can bullet proof the 700r4 and make it work great for your application.... Also, get the largest transmission cooler... or two... that you can.
Leave the 3.73 alone for this.
If the trucks in good shape I would work on resolving the minor issues that you may have with the truck and run it.
If you are intent on replacing the Suburban... what kind of vehicle would you be looking for? I am going to assume 90's models.
If you want to stay GM I would highly recommend a crew cab 454 3500 series truck. (SRW or DRW your choice) or if you are willing to learn the issues and work them out the 6.5 Diesel. Or a 2500 Suburban with a 454 or 6.5.
Ford you can get a gas or Diesel. I would recommend a 7.3 Powerstroke or the 460 V8. Both are towing monsters. Some early Super Duties (like mine) may be in your budget. Just shop wisely.
Dodge trucks.. I would recommend a Cummins diesel or a V10. Both have upgraded HD transmissions over the 360 IIRC. 2500 or 3500 series.

No offense to the old 5.9 guys, but this morning during my commute I got treated to a "black out" by a guy in a 5.9 dually ... This guy literally blacked out my lane for about 2 seconds in the middle of rush hour. Flat rude and potentially dangerous.
DEF has cleared most of that up and cleaned up the trucks. Very good technology. Now if they can just get these Bosh HPFP's figured out. Lol (JK btw)
Um, no, DEF has zip, zero, nada to do with carbon particulate in diesel exhaust. That's what the DPF is for. DEF reduces oxides of nitrogen in the exhaust.........
FWIW: I have one of them old technology 5.9 engines and the ONLY time I see "rolling coal" from it is if I mat the go pedal to the floor or towing the trailer under moderate acceleration.
I cant remember now, but with the def being used chevy claims to have reduced the regens by almost half thus saving fuel and getting 10 percent better mileage in 2011 over the 2008 through 2010 D/A which had the DPF only. So there is some correlation. I don't want to search for it now, but I know it exists.
Yea I have read the technicals somewhere as well. I know it exists too. As far as rolling coal is concerned... Not a bright spot I favor of any diesel unless your pulling a sled. Then it's awesome.
Certainly the highlight of my day, sitting in a cloud of diesel smoke.

My 99 Superduty does not drive nearly as nice as my F150 did. My F150 handled much better.
IMHO you now have a real truck. Your expedition was designed to be a drivers vehicle. It had 4 wheel independent suspension and designed to handle and steer great.
Your new truck is much more primitive by comparison... It was designed to haul a load and it uses more primitive suspension (leaf springs and a solid rear axle) to do it.
These beasts have to be more deliberately driven, then through in the fact that these trucks suffer from "death wobble" and require a steering stabilizer, even in 2wd form.
IMHO the AT tires are not optimal for towing, a good street tread is better.
Like you the first time I towed with my F350 I was underwhelmed. To be honest I still am. My 5.4 F150 pulled and handled my trailer just fine.

It was a joke. Out of nowhere, the previous post asked if Chevy cured their oil disappearing problem. There are tons of Internet problems for every brand. "Have you heard the one about............."
Sorry for the use of irony.
I get it ... Kinda feel silly now! Lol. I took both the oil comment and the Frame comment too seriously...
Kind of like those 8.1 big blocks and their piston slap and the exhaust manifold studs on the ford V10...

Have a 31 ft no slide TT and a 99 F350. Had a 97 F150 that did fine with my current TT. Upgraded it for two reasons.
1) kids were cramped in the extended cab. We needed a crew cab.
2) wanted to haul a golf cart in the bed while pulling the TT
We are over hauling the golf cart in the bed and I would be very happy with another F150 in super crew trim with an EcoBoost and the Max Tow package.
We know what we want now and they are TT's with a GVWR around 8000 lbs and an UVW around 5500-6200 lbs.
So I guess you could lump me in the I went up but I am looking to go down category.

That was resolved a long time ago. Around 2007 to be exact.
Personally, I would go drive both and get the heavy duty package on either. I have wanted a Tundra 5.7 for a long time. Just not enough payload for me right now.

I use Draw Tite trunnion hitch and two friction bars. Does great and I have NEVER removed them to back up. The friction bars have no idea if you are backing up while turning or pulling forward while turning.
Two friction bars for trailers over 25 ish feet and no problems.
There are literally hundreds of thousands of standard WD hitches and friction bars on the road towing safely every day.
That said I would be more than satisfied with a properly set up Reese SC system or Equal-I-zer... Not a huge fan of dual cam. I have it sitting in my box o parts in the garage.

Keep in mind the F350 is SRW, not going to have a 9,000# axle rating, more like 6,100 to at most 7,000#.
Same axle as a DRW Ford so it IS rated at something over 9k, only the tires are holding it back from it's full potential.
Pretty sure the DRW has a Dana 80 and the SRW has a Sterling 10.5.

The golf cart is an extreamly handy tool to have while camping. We don't golf so we have the rear seat so my family of four can ride around together. We use it all the time. The cart is so easy to maneuver with at the campgrounds. We use it to haul the laundry to the washer dryer, I haul off the waste tank with it to the dump station, we trail ride with it.
We also take it with us to Fort Wilderness. That place is so vast that a cart is almost an essential tool. Yeah I hear folks talking about bikes, we have them too. But afte 13 plus hours at a Disney park riding a bicycle back to the camper in the dark with two little ones is no fun.
We use our cart all the time. Even at home. Yard work, light hauling etc.. The little "truck" is extreamly handy.
Also does very well off road. Lol
Nope this issue will be resolved one way or another for us. A cart is just too much fun.
