RE: Does Insulin Require a Prescription?

The older forms of insulin, such as NPH and Regular are available without a prescription in the States and syringes and needles can be obtained if you sign for them (much like you would have to do to buy Sudafed). However, most diabetics now days are prescribed the Human DNA equivalent forms such as Humalog or Novolog whereas the others are usually pig or beef insulins. The human type poses much less threat for developing antibodies and sensitivites. Personally, I would ask your doctor for a 90 day script with refills and have it filled at a national chain such as Walgreen's which can then check for and provide refills wherever you are. Insulin will keep in the fridge for a long time if unopened. Once opened, you should dispose of it after 28 days.

RE: Beagle vs Racoons

I had a mutt who was a little smaller than a lab. She was about drowned by two coons she tried to run out of our creek. One jumped on her back and the other held her head under water. She put up a regal fight but, had I not run them off with a shotgun, I believe she would have been killed. She was bloodied from nose to tail. They also carry rabies so I advise trying to remove them from your property.

RE: Verizon charges for using a tethered cell phone

I just saw on the Verizon wireless site that they now offer a pay/24 hour usage on their mobile broadband. I think it was $15/24 hours. Might be the thing to consider if you only use your broadband laptop occasionally, such as while on vacation. I do not know if it is good for PC air cards or only for their pre-packaged laptop plans.
that offer applies to the MiFI cellmodem wifi-router hot spot
IDK if net-books can get it,
its not available for aircards

RE: keeping food cold

We freeze everything possible before going...hamburger, steaks, hot dogs, bacon, eggs (usually we get Egg Beaters but you can remove the shells and freeze real eggs in baggies), sausage, orange juice, jugs of Kool-Aid, butter sticks and even milk. If accessibility to ice will be limited we pack the coolers with those re-freezable ice packs and then cover all with ice. Depending on the ambient temperature we can last at least a week. Plan your meals according to what things will thaw the quickest and be most susceptible to spoilage. Have a separate cooler for your drinks or the things that will cause the cooler to be opened frequently and perhaps the fixings for the first day or two. Then leave the other cooler alone, opening only if necessary.
Happy tenting!

RE: Truxedo Deuce bed cover

Bob,
Have have no experience with the Truxedo Deuce but I have owned 2 Truxedo Originals and have nothing but good things to say about them. They are easy to install, keep the truck bed completely dry and the price was competitive.

RE: High Ground Clearance

Thanks for all the great suggestions! I was unaware they made any models with higher clearance. This then may be my ticket.

High Ground Clearance

I currently am a tent camper but am exploring any and all options. Ideally I would love something which requires little time to set up, can be easily unhitched, stores easily and gets me off the cold ground. But also, wanting it all, I would love to be able to go places off the beaten path but I do really want to make any major modifications to my tow vehicle as a TC would require. I spend many weekends camping in a secluded spot on my farm which requires going in a decline/incline across a small creek with my truck in 4WD. A PUP may fit my bill except for being able to go off the beaten path. I owned one many years ago and the ground clearance would preclude my being able to get it places I currently like to camp. Does anyone know of any models or adaptations that would raise the units so dragging bottom would be less likely?

RE: Rocky Mountain National Park

We preferred Moraine over Aspenglen...much more scenic in my opinion. There are sites which can accommodate your rig. We hated all the private RV parks in and around Estes...very crowded and cramped. You should have no trouble driving through Estes. Although you may not be able to find any parking for your rig on the main drag, there are parking lots specifically for RVs and we found a lot a street or two up from the main drag where we easily pulled in our 25' class C with plenty of room to spare. Do not take your rig up to see the Stanley...no parking up there. Do not be surprised if you have to brake often for elk and shoo them away from your campsite! It is a beautiful park...enjoy.

RE: Anacortes and Port Angeles Ferry Questions

Well, I guess I need some advice on this same subject. How important are reservations for either of these ferries for travel after Labor Day? I am planning a trip to the island and was going to "chance it". Should I rethink that idea? The plan is to cross to the island on a Saturday morning and back on a Friday morning.
Thanks

RE: Is it possible to rent a tow vehicle?

I have researched this to some extent also as I would love to fly to my vacation destinations and rent a TT and a tow vehicle, rather than a Class C. But, I have yet to find this available, at least not in Seattle, Denver, Salt Lake City or San Francisco. If anyone knows differently, I would love to hear.

RE: rv rentals ??

I live in Southern Indiana and rentals of any kind are few and far between here which I find so curious given that Indiana is probably one of the biggest RV manufacturing states.

RE: Conventional 5er vs. GN Horsetrailer with Living Quarters

WOW! That is great! So the post replaces the turnover ball and is latched into place just as the ball would be? This opens up a whole new list of options. Thanks!

RE: Conventional 5er vs. GN Horsetrailer with Living Quarters

ratherbeinwv, I do have the B&W turnover but what others have told me previously on this forum is that the adapters may void the warranty of the trailer. So this has made me nervous. I have looked on line at horse trailers with slides and very nice interiors and actually think they may cost less than a comparable RV. And, they do have them with wider bodies. I am not interested in full-timing so elaborate interiors are not my goal...getting out of the tent and off the ground is my goal. Thanks to all. I will continue to do my research!!

Conventional 5er vs. GN Horsetrailer with Living Quarters

I have a dilemma. In my younger years I tent-camped with horses, pulling 2-4 horses in a gooseneck stock trailer. I have even pulled them over Teton Pass. I drive a 2500 HD Dodge and have not really had any issues. Now that I am getting older I really am not wanting to trailer the horses long distances anymore and tent camping is becoming increasingly more uncomfortable. So, I am looking for alternatives. I really still need to keep my present GN hitch for when I do need to pull the horse trailer, I use my truck for a myriad of other farm duties, and I do not much cotton to the thought of taking a heavy 5er hitch in and out of my truck bed.
I would really like to have some sort of RV. In my research I have come to the conclusion that truck campers require a lot of add-ons (tie downs, slide-preventers, etc. but I could be wrong). Pulling a TT with my truck seems like a good choice other than the fact that it makes my total length more than I really want to manage in the campgrounds and I really do appreciate the improved turning and pulling ratios of goosenecks.
So, here is my first question for those in the know (and I will quickly admit I am very uneducated in this subject. Just what is the real benefit of having the 5er rail hitch over the conventional gooseneck ball? I would think 4 horses, moving and stomping around in the back, would weigh a substantial amount and I had no troubles with that trailer. Why can one not find a dedicated fifth wheel RV which uses a conventional gooseneck ball hitch? And, why is the conventional gooseneck hitch still standard on even the new horse trailers with very elaborate living quarters but not on RVs?
Now the second question. Were I to purchase an enclosed horse trailer, is there anyone out there that knows of a company that would do an interior living quarter's conversion using the whole trailer rather than dedicating space for horses? If not, I may consider still trading for the horse trailer with the LQ conversion and just use the horse space for storage.
Any education or thoughts would be appreciated.

RE: It Was A Dark And Stormy Night

wjhco,
I was at Hanover College in Madison, Indiana during that tornado. I watched from one of the class rooms (before they herded us into the basement) as students clung to trees trying not to be blown away. The beautiful campus was devastated. Fortunately, no serious injuries there but numerous deaths and injuries in Louisville. Every time they post warnings now, I scramble to get dressed, put on my shoes and my bra, grab my flashlight and head to the bathroom (no basement). God forbid they find me in my moo moo under a big tree. :)

RE: Does Anyone Really Have Fun Camping?

I try to be tolerant of those around me in the campgrounds because I realize camping is a great family activity (wish my parents had taken us camping when I was a kid). But on my last outing, at Moraine in RMNP, we were repeatedly awakened (ok so we went to bed before it got dark...had a rough day hiking) by a soccer ball hitting the side of our camper. The kids several sites down were playing in the loop road and were terrible catchers. After the third time being awakened by the clash of the ball and then the grunting of the little one crawling under our camper to retrieve it I finally got up, went out and had a few words with them. I simply asked them to move their game to their own campsite.
