RE: Pets are NOT to be left unattended... what??

Pet owners note well: Many states have laws against confining an animal inside a vehicle.
http://animallaw.info/articles/State%20Tables/tbusdogshotcars.htm
If I see anyone leave a dog unattended in a closed up vehicle (i.e. motorhome or trailer), I promptly call the police and animal control.
In many jurisdictions, an animal cruelty charge will result. In cases where the animal was harmed, the owner can be charged with felony animal cruelty.
You certainly are religiously anal aren't you ?many of our friends all of whom have dogs and travel leave animals in their traveling homes but they are wonderfully provided for and neighbors are informed that in the event of an emergency to please handle the puppies situation, you do need to go to the grocery etc and I get sick when I see poor animals locked in overly warm autos as ours is at home in a heated /AC equipped unit,

RE: Beware of Flying J

The state of Indiana has different rules. Not decided by Flying J.
That is why I will not buy gas in Ind unless it is absolutely a necessity. They do weird stuff to customers . Some people call it legal fraud in Indiana ! Why is it so hard to spell it out so people understand, other states do.jmho jb

RE: Grease that Ball

I have good luck with white lithium grease...if you get it on your clothes it will come out with Simple Green without staining it. I do not grease my Equalizer bars, only the hitch ball/socket and cover the ball with a flexible plastic/rubber cap when not in use.
I totally agree with this opinion JMHO jb

RE: Toilet Recommendation?

If I had to change out my Galaxy, I would opt for the Bravura. Yes, porcelain are easier to clean. The Bravura offers a bigger base area which makes it more stable the Aqua Magic series.
If your existing is on a structural pedestal, you need to measure to get the correct height replacement unit
Bravura
We had a Bravura a few years back and all I did was need to work on it for a variety of reasons JMHO jb

Over the years we have had many models and types but the Thetford we now have is by far the best we have had in respect to height, cleaning ,comfort and quality of flush. I can't remember the model number but it came in our Cruiser and is Porcelin.

RE: Is it safe to use normal garden hose for water??

I use my garden hose all the time to fill my water tank. If it makes you feel better, sanitize your hose (the same way you would your water tank) then use it. Or you can do like I do, flush it for a minute or two first then fill your tank.
Times two and once in a great while I pour a few ounces of bleach in the hose and then rinse it well, seems to work well! JMHO Jb

RE: Dumping half bath black tank every other trip or so?

What does the owners manual say about traveling with partial full holding tanks?
Some of those tanks are not well braced so the liquid movement and weight can cause problems with the tank staying in place.
Alao depending on the weight when holding liquid it can help trigger a sway condition also that is most times not good or fun! JMHO jb

RE: K&N air filters, help or not

Out here in dusty west Texas the diesel mechanics do not recommend using a K&N. The heavy duty stock filters protect the engine better. They do require more frequent replacement if the dirt is blowing.
Maybe they want to sell thier filters.
I have one in my BMW for the last 120,000 miles and never had a problem. If these filters are propoerly cleaned and oiled you should not have problems.
My MAF sensor is less than 12" from the filter and never had to clean the sensor.
The claimed improvement on acceleration and power is due to the better flow these filters provide. THey do not add horsepower but allow the throttle response to be better.
Across the board do they perform the same on all vehicles? Probably not but if you have better performance with this filter then by all means I would use it.
Again over time it would need to be properly cleaned and oiled, there is a technique to
not over oil them as too much oil will adversely affect the performance.
I do believe that the K. And N filter isn't for every one because they have to be 'properly'
Maintained and not everyone can do this with patience and quality. I have been using mine since early 2002 and like ita lot..every time I service it I take a Kleenex and run it up as far as I can reach in the filter tube and see what I get and usually nothing is on it.
Works for me.

RE: Smoked Bearing -- Spindle Damage - Axle Replacement??

Just carry a set of spare bearings and you will never have this trouble again ;)
This is the reason that an annual look see or repack is prudent judgement. It is so much easier to do at home twenty then alongside the highway... Those four bolts in the smallest circle indicate it might be a bolt on spindle if so get a new one and go camping!!JMHO jb

RE: Flush King Reviews

Bought one and all it does for me is allow me to see when bad stuff stops flowing and clear, clean water flows... I use a hose to flush out my black tank.
I have always felt and said so that a flush king is a horrendous water waster! So many people on here and else where are so anal about their portable septic tank it is sickening in my opinion. I seriously dislike wasting wonderful precious water to try to squeaky clean a septic tank.I have never done this to. My home system so why this one? I drain and hit the flush for,a minute or so and then put in a couple of gallons with some digester/perfume good to go. JMHO Jb.

RE: Extended warranty

Totaly agree, I'm leaning towards not getting it, just looking for some insight that may change my mind. You hear some horror stories and some guys with 2yr warranties are really glad they have them. 7yrs could easily be a good thing on that account. I haven't even seen a copy of the warrantee, just heard it from the Priority One rep. One good thing, if there is one with extended warranties, is that I can get it serviced anywhere. Doesn't have to be back at the dealer. The closest Fox Mountain dealer is 75 miles away, and the dealer we're buying from is 300 miles away. So in that sense it may save some money if I had to drive that far a few times for work.
It really depends on a flip of the coin as we had some friends that were on the road and had a big side by side fridge go bad and thus they were in luck because of the warranty and that was an expensive fridge.
I had another close friend have a smaller fridge and a convertor also so he made about a break even point but that is not always the case. JMHO jb

RE: Rocking While Driving

What could be the causes of the coach rocking side/by/side while driving down the road. It seems to happen when I get to about 60 mph, and I have to slow down to make it stop.
I had a trac bar put on the front of the coach - should this help the problem. Just a little concerned before I start out on my next trip.
Thanks
Mrs. Bob n Humble
Normally this type of movement comes from the rear suspension being not strong enough. It is not suprising as many of the class Cs I see have tremendous overhangs that can cause or support this type of movement, tail wagging the dog so to speak..JMHO jb It sounds as if aerodynamics plays a part in triggering it!!

RE: Adding a Digital Volt Meter to show battery state of charge

Hey Ranger, thanks for the effort! Those charts should help out many folks.
For myself, I went analog, mainly because I had them and I can see a needle position easier than the illuminated digital displays. The gauges can also be adjusted/calibrated to mirror measurements from my Fluke DMM.

I like your way Westend plus I have been following all your projects. as having all those blue lights all over the place is not in my best interest as they drive me nutz Ha Ha !
Nice job though but for me I learned a long time ago I don't need to be anal about anything any more as most of it doesn't register anymore anyways>!!
Have a great one guys as you give me good learning and make me use my mind or whats left of it Ha Ha

RE: why does shore power plug spark when i plug it in?

ok, so I think im getting it....so everytime I want to plug or unplug the shore power I should turn off the breaker inside the camper? Thats a big 10-4. Good Buddy and the supply breaker isn't a bad idea either.Safety is Paramount!!!

RE: F350 6.0 -- help!

Well, it looks like I screwed up again. I bought an 05 lariat with 129,000 miles on it. Loaded up my big lance camper and went on the maiden voyage. Flat out loved this truck, for several days...thought I got lucky and got a "good 6.0".
That all changed about halfway through the grapevine on the way back home yesterday. ;(
It is sitting at the ford dealer in N. Hollywood now awaiting about $3k in repairs (the dreaded EGR cooler and oil cooler).
There is so much "stuff" on the web about this it is hard to sort it out. No way to know if only the bad news gets posted...or if there is only bad news.
Would love to know if there are owners out there that have been happy once this repair has been made...or am I just whistling past the graveyard? Do I need to dump this thing as soon as I'm able?
I have two friends who had problems with the 6.0.
They bought the needed parts off line reasonably and installed them and now love their trucks with out the constant worry about when it is going to handgranade on them..
So, words of encouragement...or "run for the exits"?

I have been carefully removing the original caulk with a plastic scraper and then cleaning the areas with denatured alcohol. Then I apply Eternabond tape and forget it.It has a 12 to 15 year life span so just check once in a while to make sure JMHO jb

RE: Awning damage from unfurling

I have the fortune of being a student at this time and having to make a case/presentation on a fictional awning lock product. I have looked all over the internet and read many many accounts of the patio awning coming unfurled during travel and causing moderate to severe damage to the awning, RV and even other vehicles. What I cannot find, however, is a number of awnings this happens to, let's say, yearly. Does anyone know where I might find this information? I have seen most of the awning locks out there, commercial and home made. The one we are presenting attaches in much the same way as many of these locks but eliminates the need for an awning rod. Does anyone think this product (I'm guessing price would be around $40) would be useful on an actual RV? Thanks for reading.
P.S. Any info on the best way to secure an awning for travel would be helpful as well, we are planning to get a class A soon, and want to avoid this problem!
I have used two different designs of my own doing and feel very confortable with the assurance I wont need to worry about mine unfurling any time soon..

RE: K&N Filters

Have used them with great results for 15 years. I am money ahead over paying for paper filters with the Dyno showing an additional 16 HP or roughly 5%. There is no problem with over oiling them if you simply don't do it. Had the throttle body cleaned a few months ago as part of the normal recommended service and it was clean as a whistle. Keep in mind that I live in one of the dustiest places in the country (Tucson). As always.... Opinions and YMMV. :C
I have ran one for almost 12 years now and when I service it I always use a new kleenex to reach up as far as I can to wipe the walls for a test and the kleenex always comes back as near clean as when it went in so not much is getting in there. When I started using it I had gone to get a new paper unit and they told me wholesale on a quality unit was $27.00. I ordered the K& N kit for slightly more and never looked back.
I twisted wrenches for nigh onto thirty years so I am not easily sold on gimmicks or gadgets but I also schooled in the trade starting back in the oil bath era. The only reason or the main reason for the change to paper was marketing and people who didn't want to get their hands dirty.
Paper now has got very positive on ability to filter but so have many other things got better way better!
I remember when we charged an additional dollar on a service for a oil bath service as we had to clean it plus use near a half quart of additional oil to service one, back in the day.. progress is progress but not always better..JMHO jb
