RE: Iphone/car stereo and FM transmitter questions

I have a 2003 Dodge and I was able to buy an adapter that plugs in to the CD-Changer control to give me a direct connection to my iPod and Sirius dock. Much better than the FM modulators! J

RE: Wiindows 7 - Good Bad or SoSo

I've had it running on my work computer since Friday the 16th (of October). Installation was really smooth and all the drivers were automatically installed. I haven't had any problems with any programs not running correctly and the improvements over Vista are amazing. The new Aero is very nice and has some nice little features that really work well. As a Mac person I am impressed with how well this OS works and feels. I did have to turn off a lot of default UAC settings to get rid of some of the Vista annoyances. The Windows Updates are still very annoying. There doesn't seem to be a good way to get it to download updates, tell you what updates are ready, and then install them when you have time. Instead you either get automatic installs at night, or nothing except for a little flag saying updates were downloaded and you need to shutdown to install them. J

RE: New computer

I'm with TankerDude on this one. On PC's there is no easy way to move your programs over. ALSO, it is difficult for most people to move email out of Outlook or OE over, as well as program settings like bookmarks, etc. With a Mac it is extremely easy. When you get a Mac the apple store will move your files off an old PC. Once you get your programs setup you can do regular backups with Time Machine to an external hard drive. If you have any trouble or you get a new Mac later on you can use the backups to move all of your PROGRAMS AND FILES AND SETTINGS over to the new machine transparently. You'll sit down at the new machine and already have your email set up, your desktop background/wallpaper the way you want, etc. J

RE: Major bug in Apple's Snow Leopard

This only affects people who didn't do a clean install AND who use guest accounts - and NOT ALL of those people are affected. While it is a serious issue I don't think it's very widespread and you should always make sure to do a good backup before a major OS upgrade. With TimeMachine there is no longer any excuse for not having backups. J

RE: AT&T Extends VOIP to 3G Network for iPhone

I thought hell had frozen over when I saw this on the wired.com I am really surprised the AT&T is finally caving in to popular demand.

RE: Comcast Questions

I had the reduced cable service with internet and my whole bill was like $55 that got me all of the basic channels and 12Mbps internet (which usually ran at 20Mbps). I was extremely satisfied. J

RE: iphone data plan

In case anyone was curious, the iPhone supports IMAP, POP3, Exchange, for the email. Some mail accounts (Yahoo for one) even support PUSH which pushes the email out to you immediately without your phone having to check every X minutes. I have 3 email accounts set up, yahoo + GMAIL + work email. I also have an exchange account that syncs with Google Contacts and Calendars. J

RE: iphone data plan

ok i know there is some kind of contract invovled between apple and at&t regarding the data plan As stated previously, the data plan price is the same for all of the smartphones: Samsung, BB, and the iPhone. The deal AT&T has with Apple makes them the exclusive reseller while Apple gets a fat cut of the profits. It has nothing to do with plan pricing - the plans are the same as the other smart phones. When the "2G" iPhone first came out, the data plan was actually cheaper than the other phones ($20/mo). J

RE: iphone data plan

The difference is the capabilities of the phone which lead directly to how much usage is likely. On a Razr the screen is tiny and there is no proper keyboard. The browser is very limited and won't display regular web pages correctly. On a proper smartphone (iPhone, BB, etc) you have a big screen and access to a full keyboard (touch or otherwise) with a real web browser that does a good job of showing the "real" internet. ATT is betting that if you have a Razr you might check email occasionally, do some IM'ing, and maybe check sports scores online because doing anything else is such a drag. They are also betting that if you have an iPhone or smartphone you will be tempted to look things up all the time, stream music and video, download apps, keep your email synced up, etc. This translates to more network usage so they charge more for it. RE: FM transmitter for iPod

Everyone who has posted thus far is completely right. FM transmitters are junk and they take excellent sound and trash it. On top of that you are going to run into conflicting frequencies with local stations if you travel at all (unless you wire the transmitter directly into your antenna). The best option is either to get a new deck or to get an OEM radio adapter. I have an 03 dodge and was able to buy an adapter that the stock radio thinks is a CD changer. It gives me 2 AUX connections that I use for Sirius and iPod. Some kits will even allow you to skip songs and see song titles on your radio. You can get some really good radios for cheap nowadays though, and many have iPod connections; almost all have simple AUX line in connections. J

RE: Wii Fit

If you're going to be moving it regularly your should invest in an extra set of power and video cables. That way you can just leave everything hooked up at both places and just move the Wii. I would also consider purchasing the optional wireless IR receiver, the included one has a really long cable that, while convenient, would be easy to keep tangled up through frequent moves. The Wii fit is a great invention that I should use a lot more often. J

RE: Snow Leopard

I preordered mine from Amazon. Got the family pack for $49. Gotta love Apple at those prices! J

RE: Dead USB port

It's unusual for one port to "blow" by itself as they are typically grouped together in pairs or quads electrically. I would suspect a dirty jack or broken plug, or a loose solder joint. J

RE: Best XM radio set up for FW and truck

Any dockable XM or Sirius radio should work. Just get a dock for both truck and camper.

RE: Laptop Mag rates manufactures tech support

I've owned laptops from Acer, Dell, Fujitsu and Lenovo (actually pre-Lenovo IBM) and desktops from HP, Dell and Apple so I've got just about all of them covered but since I've never called tech support for any of them I couldn't rate them on that. Am I atypical? To me, tech support is a non-issue that I don't consider in my purchase decision. I have called tech support for HP and Kodak printers but never for the computer itself. I agree, I don't buy devices based on what support is available because I plan on never having to use it. I buy more on device quality and features. J

RE: Laptop Mag rates manufactures tech support

I saw this article and frankly HP belongs there. I've always had pretty good luck with Dell though. Apple is definitely the easiest, especially if you live close to an Apple store. J

RE: Clearwire, Any comments.

I just moved to Charlotte, NC and I was seriously considering ClearWire. With unlimited internet at highspeed pretty much anywhere in Charlotte, I really considered it. The only downside is it doesn't really compete with 6Mbps since the fastest ClearWire is like 2Mbps. I had 21Mbps Comcast service at my previous home so this was a big step down for me. But I would definitely consider ClearWire a viable alternative for someone who would look at a slower DSL package. You could always run MagicJack over Clearwire if you wanted to. Josh

RE: Sim's in tracphone or Net phone

I have successfully done this with an AT&T SIM card because TracPhone is owned by AT&T. Not sure if it would work with tMobile or not.

RE: Question for Audiophiles and Music Enthusiasts

I think you will get much better sound quality going that route. I used to run an old Technics receiver with some Bose bookshelf speakers. Much better sound output then most computer sound systems. I would also make another suggestion. Use the RCA monitor audio output instead of the headphone jack. Headphone audio goes through some amplification which the monitor does not. The monitor will also be line-level output so you won't have to mess with the volume settings on the TV to get it right.

RE: Magic Jack revisited

FYI, it wont work with a security system unless you buy a special (very expensive) cellular reporting device. We constantly have people that get MagicJack, disconnect their regular phone service and then have to get their regular phone service turned back on when they realize their security system no longer works. It should work if you disconnect your whole house phone wiring from the telco and connect it to the magic jack. And rather than cellular reporting, I'd go with one of the internet reporting options (they're are several). I sent a magic jack to my parents who are working in Beijing China. I can call them using a local US # and they can call me and caller ID works too. Also, when I leave them a voicemail they get an email letting them know who called and they can listen to the voicemail online. J
