RE: Running a Standard LCD Monitor from 12v without an intverter

I meant booster, not transformer, sorry.

Running a Standard LCD Monitor from 12v without an intverter

I have been running a monitor off of a 100 watt inverter(pulling 4-8 amps!) and was thinking of a simpler way of powering it. I figure, since the AC connector on the monitor goes to a bridge rectifier and filter set, can I use a 1:10 step up transformer to go from my 12v regulated circuit to my monitor? Has anyone done this? This doesn't need to be anything of permanence, just something to get me to summer; when I get my 12v TV. Any thoughts would be helpful.

RE: Shore power automatic switch to inverter.

I if build a new rig from the ground up, that's the system I will be using. I'm just trying to get functionality with the hardware I have without spending more than I have.

Thanks. I'll post some pics when I finish the build.

RE: Shore power automatic switch to inverter.

Thanks James. I have one more question: If I were to use a SPDT relay instead, could I tie the neutral from shore mains to neutral on the inverter? I come from the 12VDC world thinking this would be like tying ground common. Of course only if the ground and neutral don't connect on the inverter.

RE: Shore power automatic switch to inverter.

I'm eventually going to upgrade to one. I just happen to have a 12V one. I'm going to use a 12V power supply on the shore side to facilitate the switching.

Shore power automatic switch to inverter.

I'm wanting to build a box for my stealth camper box that will switch from shore power (when plugged in) to inverter automatically. I currently have a DPDT switch so I can switch manually, but auto would be nice so I stop shutting off my fridge (because I are stoopid and can't remember to hit that darn switch!) I came up with a basic design and was curious as to what you guys think.

*side note:
I had a rig for charging camera batteries similar in function to this with and old UPS. I de-soldered the alarm on it and it worked great for a couple of years. When I wanted to step up to a fridge on my rig, I needed a 750W inverter (the UPS being maybe 250W with about six hours of charge time) and that's where I am now.
