RE: dewinterize question

Here is what I do for this. I have a outside filter that I fill with about a 1 and half cups of bleach. I then connect city water and set the bypass on the water heater for summer use. I then turn on all faucets till I smell bleach, this includes inside and outside. I let this to set for maybe 4 or 5 hours. I then open up the outside filter and place a cup of baking soda in it and repeat the above items. You can just flush the bleached water out by running water through it but the smell of the bleach makes it very hard for me to stay in the camper so I use baking soda. I do want to point out since we bought this camper in 2008 I have never put any water in the water tank and only use the water pump each fall to winterize but that may change this summer as we will be camping at Shawnee State Park outside of Portsmouth and their sites do not have water only electricity.

RE: Propane Refill Scam

First off the exchanges that you used are always that way, they short you a little bit of propane and as you say are more expensive. I always get mine refilled at a propane store. You say that a sign needs to be placed on the cage but you also say there was a plastic label that said 15 lbs so I guess they filled your request for a sign now didn't they. All I can say is lesson learned from 1 old fart to another.

RE: Hocking Hills

I live about 30 minutes away, can be there and setup in about 45 minutes or so. I usually stay at the KOA, which we love but there are plenty of other campgrounds in the area. The state park there is pretty nice and around 24 or 25 bucks a night not too pricey. You can find anything from fishing at Lake Logan and Rose Lake to canoeing at Rockbridge, hiking at Old Man's Cave and Rock House. I would suggest you just google Hocking Hills region and you will get a lot of sites to come up. Good luck and I hope your 2 grandkids have fun.

RE: RV Parks Around San Antonio, TX

When the family and I went to San Antonio in 2010 we stayed at the San Antonio KOA. I know some people don't like them but this one was pretty nice. There is a bus stop outside the front gate so you can use the bus to get downtown and not worry about parking. The people and the campground was real nice. The laundry and bathrooms were all clean and the campground was well taken care of. Just another option to consider for that area.

RE: HELP! Summer 2013 MA to Mt.Rushmore & Yellowstone,etc...

I forgot to mention, when you go past Mitchell, SD make sure you stop at the Corn Palace. It is a auditorium made out of corn. You will see signs for it when you get off in Mitchell, we found it when we stopped for gas and glad we took a couple of hours to do it. They have parking for RVs that is a short walk away.

RE: 1st night in New Trailer

Wow a new trailer how exciting. Driveway camping nothing wrong with doing that with a new camper. My wife and I have had a popup since 2008 and we still camp in the driveway, we can get away from the kids for a night or 2 and not have to go anyway plus the campground owners are real nice, well at least one is. Besides what teenage daughter doesn't think their parents are crazy.

RE: HELP! Summer 2013 MA to Mt.Rushmore & Yellowstone,etc...

We went to that area in 2009 and had a blast. We liked Crazy Horse Monument a lot better then Mt. Rushmore so my advice is to go to both and make up your own mind. As far as where to stay we went to the KOA in Rapid City and thought it was pretty nice. I really don't have much input on where to stay but I can tell you that the drive through South Dakota was a bear due to it being long and the same view all the way other then a single dead tree every 60 or 70 miles. Plus this is the only place that had gates on the freeway entrances, used to close the freeway oof during the winter due to bad weather.

RE: No more Twinkies???

All I can say is when I got into the telecommunication business 32 years ago, I was working for a local company installing a new phone system. We were not union and when some of the other workers at this location found this out they threaten to walk off the job. The union rep and 2 very large gentlemen came to where we were working and told us to leave or else. To this day I still do not understand why they were allowed to work while we were not and I am sure if we had refused the very large gentlemen would have made sure we left, 1 body parts at a time. I guess violence is the solution to every problem. Ever since then I have had no use for unions and I feel these people are getting what they brought upon themselves.

RE: Transmission Temps - What is normal?

Here is my 2 cents worth of advice. I have a 2000 Chevy Express 1500 that we use to pull a Rockwood HW256 popup tent camper, it weighs around 4000 pounds. I bought a Scan Gauge 2 so could see what the van was doing was towing, things such as coolant temperature, transmission temperature, RPMs, MPH, etc. On the family trip this summer from Lancaster Ohio to Gettysburg PA I watched the transmission temperature and while on the flat roads in Ohio the transmission was in the 160/170 degree range, once we hit West Virginia and Maryland on I-68 with the hills the temperature inched up to 200/210 range. It hits as high as 233 degrees for a very short time of about 5 minute on 1 or 2 steep hill inclines. Once past that it fell back to the 200/210 ranges. I have talked to my mechanics about the safe range and all I get is temperature is the enemey to transmissions and the higher it is the shorter the life. I have searched on the internet and found temperature charts for transmissions and I have yet to find one that list it information by make or model. My mechanic also mentioned some preventive maintenance that one cna do is to keep the radiator and transmission cooler clean by hosing them off with a garden hose, the cleaner it is the better it will get rid of the heat. Here is a link to what I consider a pretty good chart. http://www.txchange.com/heatchrt.htm

RE: Usable Life of a Truck

I drive a 1997 Chevy C1500 that turned over to 256,000 miles on the way home from work today. It does not use oil, it doesn't leak fluid on my driveway, i.e. I DO NOT have automotive stains on my driveway which I hate. The A/C is cold, the heat is hot. The body is in good shape with just a little rust. When things break I get them fixed and pay my mechanic, it has been years since I had a monthly payment to make. It servers it purpose quite well so why get rid of it. When it dies I will get me another truck and drive it till the wheels fall off. Why not.

RE: Been a heck of a trip home. . .

Just got back home last Friday from a wonder week long trip to Gettysburg, Pa. The trip over took us 7 hours, the trip home was 13 and 1/2 hours. Was driving west on I-68 in Maryland and a couple on a motorcycle came up next to us and pointed to our trailer, I pulled over and there was smoke coming out of the middle of the wheel where we had pretty much fried the wheel bearings. Spent 4 hours getting that repaired. Got back on our way just in time to reach Wheeeling, WV to be welcomed by the terrible storm that was blowing through Ohio and on to states further east. The next thing we hit a 10 mile long traffic jam due to road construction at I-77 and I-70 interchange. It was stop and go and the go was maybe 50 feet at a time. We did make it home, just another camping trip with things that happen to all of us at times. Sometime in the future these will become great story to tell and memories to share.

RE: Riding out the Storms

I live about 30 miles west of the Hocking Hills region of Ohio. I can be at a campground in Hocking Hills and setup in about 45 minutes or so. We were coming back from Gettysburg, Pa on Friday when the storm was just coming in. We hit Wheeling, WV and got heavy rain and heavy winds. I am glad I have a popup with less side area for the wind to move me around with. We drove about 10 miles past St Clairsville, Ohio and the rain started to let up with the winds not so bad. By Zanesville, Ohio the skies had clear but we found only 1 gas station open due to the power outages. We got home late, around 10:30 at night but we had power at our house, guess we are lucky. We lost power while out and again on Sunday for about 30 minutes while the power company was working up the road. I lost a piece of facia on my garage but other then that no major issues at all. The only other thing I saw in the neighborhood was a large walnut tree at went down in my neighbor's yard.

RE: Is it okay to stay overight in Wytheville VA?

RedG wrote: Is it okay to stay overight in Wytheville VA? No, everyone must leave the city at sundown........... love the humor! I don't think this is true, the wife and I went there last year for 4 days and we did not leave when the sun went down, but I don't remember seeing other people around at the campground either so maybe we should have and now local law enforcement is looking for us. I guess we can never return there for fear of being arrested.

Jackson Ohio Splashdown Country

Just wondering if anyone has taken their families to Splashdown Country that is located outside of Jackson Ohio. The prices for the campground that is located there seems to be reasonable. Any feedback is welcomed since I am looking to go there to play some golf with my son and maybe stay there. If the water part is any good I will make more time for it, if not maybe we will go else where but there are not many other choices for campgrounds in the area.

RE: Our first trip

This type of stuff happens all the time to all of us. When you go on your next trip take a walk around the campground and when you see another camper walk up and a conversation and ask what kind of issues they have had while RVing. You will be surprised the answers you will get. Example I met a fellow a couple years back with a fifth wheel who told me he had just popped out his back window on his pickup when he turned too tight or the couple who was visiting the Air Force Museum in Dayton and pulled their travel trailer in a drainage ditch and couldn't get it out. 2000 dollars later it was out and they were on their way. I had flat tires, broken parts on the trailer, etc. It is all part of the game and I for one never think these things wouldn't happen to me as it surely will if I do. Just learn and try not to do the same thing again.

RE: Leveling your TT

I have always heard to not use the jacks other then the A frame jack to level a trailer. These jacks are not designed for this purpose, they are there to just provide support and nothing else. I have a level on the front of my camper that looks like a T. I use plywood boards of different thickness to use under the tires and 2 boards for under the A frame jack. You level first side to side and then front to back. I pull into my site and I look at the level and after doing this several time I can now see by how far the bubble is off of level how many boards I need. This was a trial by error and if I am wrong I pull up or back up and add 1 or 2 more boards as needed. Once level side to side I use the jack on the A frame to level front to back. Just takes some practice to get the hang of it.
