RE: 1150 vs. 990

I too had to make that decision when buying mine 5 years ago. Since I haul a boat on 95% of my trips I liked the 990 better since it allowed a shorter hitch extension. Plus, when on the inside it felt to me that the added length didn't make the camper feel much bigger. What do you gain, a coat closet or something like that (remember I am comparing 2007 models). That minimal closet/cabinet space was not enough to override my engineering mind looking at the shorter hitch extension.
4000lbs in the bed? I have yet to weigh mine but don't most of the posts on here say they are closer to 5k when loaded up and ready to dry camp with water and everything?
What year 3500 you looking at? If you are worried about following the payload rating exactly and never going over it the Chevy had the lowest GVWR for the 2000 era trucks I was looking at. Newer trucks have increased. Heck, my 01 dually F350 GVWR is 11,000 while my father in laws 2011 SRW F350 is 11,000ish lbs.
Good luck with whatever you buy. John

RE: Do I really need a Dually?

I started with a srw with my 990 and after one eason my wife would not ride in it and took the kids in a seperate vehicle to get to the campgrounds. So now we have a drw and love it. Like campn4walleye says, it depends on your comfort level.
As for driving the drw in town, I have no issues taking it to the store or running down the main drag. The only thing that makes me nervous is when road construction puts out cones and funnels traffic down. That gets tight. For everything else you learn the limits of the truck and know to park farther out, not do drive thrus, etc.
I also put about $1k into upgrades for the drw. Rancho 9000s, stable loads, airbags, Roadmaster anti sway bar. The roadmaster was the best bang for the buck of all the upgrades.

RE: Rear Sway bar upgrade from stock--suggestions?

The Roadmaster was a huge improvement over the stock one on my 01 F350 DRW.

RE: Arctic Fox 860 Theft Recovery Project

What part of Oregon you in? I am near the north eastern corner just across the Columbia. If you are close enough you could come see my 07 990 in person and take any pics you want to get your info.

RE: What type of hitch do you use with your super ....

I assume you mean the drop hitch places the ball too low. You could buy a 2" drop hitch and turn it over to get 2" increase in height (or 4" or 6" etc). I use a 6" drop hitch with no Super Hitch and a regular hitch (no drop) with the Super Hitch.
I wouldn't think more material in the tube is going to be easy to find. Aren't all the hitches made pretty much the same length? I have had no issue with my set up but I only have a 3k lb boat/trailer back there. I am guessing loaded horse trailers weigh more than that.

RE: How often do you unload your camper on outings?

Just about everytime we camp it gets off loaded. Mainly because my kids are 6 and 8 and it is much easier with it low for them. Plus, we have the boat with us 95% of the trips we take and it comes out of the water every night for peace of mind and recharging the trolling motor batteries.

RE: problems "mating" camper to truck

What is your truck? Maybe people with that same vehicle will have vehicle specific tips.

RE: Artic Fox 990 on Ford 350 LB SRW??

Our 990 on my first truck (95 F350 Ford, gas, 4 dr, 4x4) was scary to drive. After about 4 trips my wife refused to take the kids in the truck and followed in a second vehicle. After one season of that I went throught the same thing Campn4walleye went through and decided I would rather spend the $6k+ on the right vehicle rather than add the mods to my old truck.
But to answer your questions if you are set on keeping that truck I would put on 19.5" wheels (a few different manufacturers available), Stable Loads, Air bags (yes I like them if used correctly), Rancho 9000XLs, bigger anti sway bar on the rear.
Hitch Ext? Yes. The camper hangs out 2 feet past the bed.
Do the mirrors telescope out? I hated the clip on extensions. Vibrated a ton and about every 30 minutes I would have to pull over to push it back on since nobody was in the passengers seat to push it back into place.
Oh the horrible memories this brings back. So glad I sold that truck and got the right truck for the job.

RE: Tiedown brackets for 2002 F-250 PSD shortbox supercab

Call the tie down manufacturer and talk to them. Torklift? They should have taken that into consideration when designing for your truck. Unless your truck has some customization that made the cable the way it is. If I remember correctly on my 01 psd the emergency brake cable was there but the bracket fit around just fine.

RE: 01' AF 1080 + 01' F350 DRW 4dr 7.3 + Wellcraft 5900lb

If you look at my sig you'll see we are close to the same vehicle/camper/boat setup. Like boatycall said I barely notice the boat, it is mostly the camper that I feel. Technically you'll likely be over your payload numbers. My truck weighed 8k with my wife and I inside. I have not weighed the camper but your GVWR should be 11,500lbs (mine is 11k since from Cali) and from what everybody says AF's weigh way more than the remaining 3,500 lbs when loaded with all our gear. I personally feel very safe in mine and have no issues being over a little.
For setup I do use the airbags set around 55-60lbs. I can feel a negative difference when above or below those numbers. I love my Roadmaster 1.5" rear anti sway bar. Also have Stable loads and Rancho 9000XLs set at 9 on the rear and 5 on the front. All that combined made my ride the way I wanted it. We do a lot of the back highway driving (not much interstate) and those roads have lots of twists and turns, potholes, and undulations and the truck handles great.
My only complaint is I wish I had a jake brake for the long downhills and the bigger brakes taht come with 19.5 wheels. Hey, it only takes money.

RE: truck camper sways too much

Give me a holler and we can take out my DRW with my AF 990 and then do yours and can compare by seat of your pants if you want since I am in Richland also. South Richland off of Keene. Plus, we can just shoot the bull on options and what I went through when I started with my SRW and moved up to the DRW. Help you brainstorm to make sure all your options are covered.
