RE: Tent Camping in Mexico

Most campgrounds have areas to erect a tent. Ask for less expensive no hookup price. Places like Emerald Coast has 100's of tent sites. Catemaco is good, Palenque, Mahahual.
Belize- Go to Placencia.

If the new Durango to Mazatlan Cuota is finished.

RE: Telcel Internet

I was thinking of a SIM card for my ipad or iphone and using it as a hotspot for more than one computer..anyone done this? Are SIM cards available on a pay-as-you-go plan
This works fine and some people I know did this.
You must have an Iphone that is or can be unlocked to accept a Sim card.
A telcel company store (See link Brian posted) can do this, no where else. You use the Banda Ancha monthly plan. Pay anywhere.
But I recomend that you sign up for the service called Mitelcel. This works best. You can pay and order the time using the Mitelcel site. But to be able to signup you have to have a phone number where you can receive a text message that is already set up for Banda Ancha.

RE: Telcel Internet

It's a real bother when you jump through hoops to get Banda Ancha and then find out it just isn't quite reliable enough. Larger cities and towns near downtown yeah but rural areas are sad. I've given up and use internet cafes with DSL or fiber optic. Around 500 times faster. There's nothing like getting kicked offline 37 times in an hour to set the tone
If you are trying to use the stick in a USB port and you are in the RV it does not work as well as using a USB extension cable and move the stick around to get the best signal. I recommend buying a 15' long powered cable and if signal is weak put it outside the RV in a plastic bag (waterproof).
Here is the cable, Cost $8 http://www.data-alliance.net/servlet/-strse-74/USB-2.0-Active-Repeater/Detail
I can pickup a good signal where people can't even get a fair cell phone signal.
But the more rural you are the slower the connection will be
Slow to high. These are the 3 speeds you will see.

RE: Xpu-Ha

Did Xpu Ha ever fill up this season?
I don't think anyone was ever turned away but Dierck found some unusual places to park campers. Some with no hookups.
It was almost totally full from mid-December to mid-February.
It's a very small place and campers are really crowded together.
I'm sure if there was more space and more reliable electricity & had better water it would fill to capacity.

RE: Xpu-Ha

Yesterday there were only 2 campers at the La Playa campground. Remember it is not the first driveway, that one says camping (But is Bonanza) It has limited services, better for tents & vans. La Playa is the second driveway it says restaurant. They stop you on weekends to collect a fee, say I'm going to the campground and there is no fee. 20.47725° -87.26173° is entrance road.
Say hi to the Glampers - Carol & Richard. Tell them John sent you.

Oh that's the place way at the North end of the lake. Very narrow road with heavy vegatation. Here is a link to a blog with more pictures when they went there.
Go down the page about half way to see her discussion.
Turtle on Down the Road
You could reply on her blog, if you have more specific questions about the camping in the whole area.

RE: GPS Navigation Systems in MX

I just noticed that Garmin has come out with a new 7" RV that has Mexico, US, Canada maps with lifetime updates for $300. I think that's a nice size for your RV. You can plan your trips with MS Streets & Trips and upload them to this unit.
Garmin Nuvi 2797 Specs
Here is how you can upload from S & T
You can export data from Streets & Trips to a .gpx data file that you can use on your Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation device or on a website such as Bing Maps. .Gpx is an industry-standard file format for recording navigation data.
On the Data menu, click Export to GPX file.
Select the folder where you want to save the .gpx file.
In the File name box, type the name you want for the .gpx file, and then click Save.
Notes
Exporting .gpx data is a way to get saved locations and routes that you create in Streets & Trips into your Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation device or use them on a mapping website such as Virtual Earth.
To use a .gpx data file on your GPS navigation device, your device must support .gpx files. For more information, check the documentation that came with your device or the manufacturer's website.

RE: anyone tried the durango mazatlan cuota this spring?

The new highway was scheduled to open by October 2013.
When I look at the Construction Photo Essay documenting what this construction of the 69 bridges and 61 tunnels consists of, I'm totally amazed that it could even open that soon.
Take a look at what this construction entails, I'm very impressed by the Mexican engineering.
It will be an amazing Cuota, I wonder what it will cost to drive it.
I drove the old "Devils Backbone" in my motorhome over 10 years ago and swore I would never go back over that road again.

RE: Propane Adapters

Mexico runs on Propane, cooking and engines too.
Actually they call it Gas.
However it is 100% Butane if you are not in the high mountains.
Northern travelers are advised to fill their tanks when they get back to the USA.
Because Butane has zero vapor pressure at 0oC (32oF).
It is perfectly mixable with propane and in warm weather you will not notice any difference.
What I have found if you have a motor home with a built in tank you can fill at any of the small roadside Global gas stations. But they will not fill bottles.
The big gas places on the outskirts of towns fills those bottles but sometimes they will not fill a built-in RV tank.

RE: GPS Navigation Systems in MX

Both Garmin and TomTom self full North American maps with lifetime traffic and map updates.
They are not as good as MS Streets & Trips running on your laptop but are high resolution, 6" and easy to see in the sun.
Just don't believe them when they tell to to turn in the middle of nowhere. In general all the large city maps in Mexico are good. Canada, USA and Mexico are all included in North American addition but Mexican maps are not as good. They were far more accurate in determining my arrival time in Mexico & USA. They must learn from seeing the speeds you drive.
When I looked at Rand Mcnally units, 6 mos ago they had no way to get you Mexican maps.
Also compare screen resolution and sun relections I thought the 6" TomTom model was easier to read then the RMc's 7".
I bought the TomTom Via 1605 for $200 from Amazon.com. The new maps upload very slowly even with a fast cable internet.

I didn't turn mine in for the past 2 years. No problem when I returned for next year. They knew they were not turned in but I brought the paid forms with me so they knew I had paid.

RE: Tolls!! Are we autobus or truck

Here is my experience on the East coast of Mexico all the way to the Yucatan.
A motor home with 2 axels but DUAL rear wheels is always charged the autobus rate. If it is not dual wheel (Eurapean) it is charged the auto rate.
The attendent often looks down to count the wheels. I've never been short changed but I know the toll ahead of time and usually pay by correct change.
I don't tow, but that is a different story.
The West coast has been different, sometimes the count axles, sometime the dual wheels.

RE: Where are all the RV'ers?

We have been in the Yucatan (QR) since November. Our park was always 90 to 100% full.
Location, location. Power is bad, bathrooms are bad, not near any easy shopping. But the 1-1/2 mile white sand beach and lots of campers from USA & Canada makes it all great.

RE: ultra low sulfa diesel fuel

It's amusing to read posts from people who feel they should respond to topics that they are not qualified to answer.
Questions about ULSD have been asked and answered hundreds of times. Brian's answer is the closest to correct. Don't expect a lay person to be giving the correct answer to a VERY technical question.
Questions about travel in Mexico, don't expect someone who reads a lot but has never ventured beyond the USA border and past a border town to give a realistic answer. Brian has travelled in Mexico for over 25 years.
