RE: Real Estate + Motorhome = ?

Punta Gorda is a nice little city. Cape Coral, a ways south, is chock full of brand new, never lived in houses with tile, carpet, appliances etc for the price of a nice car.

RE: underway crock pot

I don't think they get nearly as hot as 110V cookers, but I bought a cheap one from JC Whitney. Have a great stay at Geiger Key, they have a nice shaded outdoor bar/grill with fine people there. Even if you can't eat it, every Sunday they have a big community BBQ and it's a great party just to meet people.

New RV Park in the Florida Keys

A very popular local band sent this email out:
January 22, 2009
Hello Everyone,
Greetings from the Islands. Just a short note to talk about a few things going on in the next few days. On Saturday January 24th we will be performing along side one of my favorite people in the world, Mac McAnally. He is CMA's Musician Of The Year, and has written countless hit songs including the current top ten Kenny Chesney hit "Down The Road." Mac and Kenny sing a duet on this recording.
As a member of Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band, Mac has written a number of songs with Buffett, including two songs from Jimmy's upcoming record: "Coast of Carolina" and the title track, "License to Chill." Jimmy also recorded Mac's song, "It's My Job" which appears on Buffett's '81 release, "Coconut Telegraph."
Anyway, I can go on and on about Mac, but what is most important is Mac will be in the Keys on Saturday for one show only at the grand opening of Lazy Lakes RV resort at mile marker 19.8 on Sugarloaf Key. Turn at Johnson road and go all the way to the end. Mile Marker 24 band and I will kick things off at 3:00 PM and Mac takes the stage at 6:00 PM. It gets better!! How about it's free to get in! How about free food and the best part, free beer for everyone!! There will be plenty of parking and everyone is welcome.
Then on Tuesday January 27th, we are at the Sugarloaf KOA Resort at mile marker 20. This is one of the nicest resorts anywhere and it's in our back yard. Great tiki bar, wonderful friends and a full bar right on the ocean. What could be better?
Thursday night, January 29th will be the 2nd show of our winter concert series, "Tunes In A Tropical Key" at the San Carlos Theater on Duval Steet in Key West. Tickets are available at www.keystix.com or call 305-849-1927. Discounts for Locals, Seniors, Military and special group rates. Tickets also available at the door, but they are cheaper in advance so make plans early! Remember, this concert series runs weekly through the end of March!
If you are within striking distance of the Keys we hope you can join us and if you're not you know we are sending you warm tropical breezes and hope you keep livin' on Key West time!!

RE: Shrimp and Grits

An old southern dish. Down here in hard times Key Westers ate "Grits and Grunts" because it was so inexpensive. Shrimp and grits are indeed good with cheese, I use shredded white american for its mild, smooth flavor.

RE: Buffalo Chicken Dip (Just in time for the Super Bowl)

I doubled the recipe except the cheese, 8oz was fine. Also used about 14oz of rotisserie chicken in the doubled recipe, not 20oz. It's a hit! It was gone by second quarter......

RE: Need "special" dinner recipes.........

All of these sound wonderful,I'm drooling. My favorite meal, and my wonderful wife makes it for me once a year, is:
Beef Wellington (prime rib in pastry) with a mild horseradish sauce
Fresh asparagus with bernaise sauce
twice baked potatoes
side salad with garlic croutons and raspberry vinaigrette
A good red wine
Then I sleep for 24 hours!

RE: Pork Butt in a Dutch oven

I ONLY make Eastern Carolina BBQ with the vinegar sauce, piled up on a hamburger bun and some crunchy cole slaw on top. I do enjoy smoking year round in my Masterbuilt. I can easily taste the Liquid Smoke acrid flavor, but if I was snowbound or it's too d*mn cold outside I'd use it too.
To make dry rub adhere better, rub the entire piece of meat down with yella mustard, then shake on a generous amount of rub. The mustard melts away with no effect on flavor and (in a smoker) you'll end up with a beautiful bark on the butt. (The pork, not yours).
For a delicious NC BBQ sauce (I always make mine a day or two before the pork) I buy a bottle of apple cider vinegar and pour out about 1/5 of it. Then I put in a heaping teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes, a teaspoon of brown sugar, juice from half a lemon, a teaspoon of not-too-hot sauce like Franks or Red Hot or Green Tabasco and maybe 1/2 teaspoon each of onion powder and garlic salt. Put the top back on, shake it up and let it get good overnight in the fridge. For a potluck or party I just poke holes in the screwtop and shake it out.
That's some good eatin' and at a potluck it will be the first thing to disappear. Throw a little sauce over it right when you shred it (I use those big clear plastic "salad hands"). In eastern NC they often chop it instead of shredding but the flavor is the same.

RE: Fishing in the Keys

In KW proper you can fish off White Street Pier and catch. I've even gotten little bonnethead sharks there. Any public access to the water you can fish, but the catch won't be big, 0-2 pounders.
A headboat such as the Tortuga IV might make you happier. They don't go to the reef but they go out to 30-40 feet and are really good at finding fish. $45.
Even in a little boat you can get to good spots. Try around Fleming Key and near the boats moored behind Christmas Tree Island. The water is calm "out back" (the Gulf rather than the ocean) and you can scoot around pretty well, just don't cross anything brown. My wife has a 13 foot Whaler and she does fine.
Fishing at boat ramps isn't allowed because your line could foul a prop. Have a great trip!

RE: Pot Lucks

Cheesy Hot HashBrown Dish
Easy and filling and cheap!
1 pkg. frozen shredded potatoes (loose)(30oz)
1 stick softened butter
1 white or yellow onion, chopped fine
1 8oz cup sour cream
2 regular (10 oz) size cans cream of chicken soup
1 jalapeno, gutted, deribbed and chopped finely
1 8oz pkg (ziplock bag type) shredded cheddar or your favorite cheese
These amounts made enough for two 10 inch square foil pans full.
Thaw taters. Reserve a few ounces shredded cheese. Combine everything in big bowl and pour/scoop into "Pam'd" casserole or baking dish so it's about 2" deep and bake off at 350*F. Check at 50 minutes, should be evidence of minor bubbling on edges, you're done. Sprinkle remainder of cheese on top of hot taters and serve.
Options: put in scallions and crumbled bacon or crumbled sausage. Add/subtract hot pepper. One jalapeno leaves a very tolerable "finish".

RE: fuel on the way to the keys

Key Haven Shell (mile marker 6ish) has a big turnaround as they are also a truck rental place. It costs more but you don't have to fill up, just buy enough to let you get to Florida where gas is cheaper.

RE: Headed to Florida

Another note....don't drive your rig into Key West proper. All CG's are before you get into KW. The first few miles are easy but in Old Town the roads are extremely tight and there is a panicky amount of foot/bicycle/scooter traffic all around you. You can't possibly see everything at once, best to avoid the hassle and enjoy your time here without this added stress.

RE: Headed to Florida

I would target Florida City to top off, just before entering the Keys. There's a Texaco on the right that's easy to drive through and there's a station a block off the main road that's even cheaper with diesel. Fuel is competative until about mile marker 80, then it goes up. Once you're down here you're paying.
