You can also find infrared temperature probes at most hobby shops. RC car enthusiasts use them to check their engine temps, just point and shoot. They are around 25.00.

I'm out at China Lake at the moment, most passes into Yosemite are closed this time of year.
I would second the Valley of Fire, and Red Rock. I was in Vegas two weeks ago, rented Harleys and rode the Valley of Fire route, had an absolute ball!!
