RE: Have not tent camped in 30 years

Don't let anyone spoil your fun - not even the bears. They don't want you. They want goodies. So don't put the goodies in the tent...and that includes any fruit flavored lip gloss or drinks.
The last time I slept in a tent... we had decided air mattresses were the way to go. Takes up the middle of the tent. No place to stand without being hunched over. Found out...Putting jeans on while laying on an air mattress is a whole lot of frustration and exercise.

RE: Internet Access on the Road

We use the 20GB/month data plan from Millenicom.com. The service is through Verizon, and the coverage is excellent. Millenicom's "Unlimited" plan uses the Sprint network, and their "Basic" plan uses T-Mobile.
I can't say enough good things about Millenicom. We went on a five month trip last year from Oregon, south to Yosemite, east to Mississippi, north to Michigan and west back to Oregon. I can only think of a few times we did not have good internet. We bought a Wilson Cradle (from the 3G store) to go along with it and it really was well worth it.
3G Store
1 x Wilson Sleek 4G-V Signal Booster for 3G and Verizon 4G LTE - 815126
And I can give two times I was amazed.
1. We were camped at North Pines in the Yosemite Valley and I had internet signal enough to send and receive emails.
2. We were camped in Death Valley and got a PHONE CALL.
We can put our phone on the Wilson Cradle and boost it's signal, too.
We have an old clam shell Sprint cell phone.

RE: First extended trip help

I wanted to see Roswell.... and we almost skipped Carlsbad Caverns. Instead we skipped Roswell and got tickets for the 1-1/2 hour tour through Kings Palace in Carlsbad. Out of a six month trip... I'd put Carlsbad Caverns as one of the top three places. Make reservations for the tour.
There's an Escapees campground between Roswell and Carlsbad. We almost skipped that and opted to stay over closer to the caverns. Instead we changed our mind and stayed at the SKP's cg. Loved it. Loved the people. Felt like we'd come home to someplace we'd never been before. Stayed two nights.
On the 2nd night I commented how nice it was that everyone put lights under their rigs... to make it easier to see at night. But I was told that it's to keep the pack rats from getting into the wiring and doing serious damage at night. I'd never heard of such a thing. (So Pack some rope lights along. They can be strung up in the awning or laid down on the ground either under the rig or around it...even as a walkway.
Don't make an iron clad itinerary with a time table that will wear you out. AND keep an eye out for weather. Sometimes you can hold up or speed up to keep a storm front from getting a direct hit.
This is the weather / trip planner that should help you a bit.

RE: Internet on the go

Millenicom offers a 10GB (4G speed) and 20GB (3G/4G combo) plan with no contract. You buy a mifi device from them (coverage is very good - they use the Verizon network) and you can stop and start the service with a phone call and a service charge to hook it up.
So if you used it for 3 months and stopped it for 3 months and then used it for six months... You'd pay for the device ($100) and start up fee plus $70 a month for only the months you used it. Technical service is 24/7 and always a person in the USA.

RE: Tub or Shower

How about a round collapsible soft sided tub... like one of those used to keep beer and pop cold at a picnic ?? I found one for about 12.00 and I think it's big enough for a 3 year old to sit cross legged in. By the time he's five, he won't mind a shower and playing in a tub of water with water toys won't float his boat as much as it does now.
I carried this with us when we had 18 lb fur babies that needed to be bathed (outside). Now hubby just uses it as a carry all in the back seat of the pickup. Tools, jackets, air hoses....

RE: 3 way Refrigerator Troubleshooting

One more thing.... open the outside compartment for the back of the fridge...and take a look in there. There might be a fuse in a little electrical box that needs to be replaced. Look for traces of yellow powder and corrosion. If you see Yellow Powder, then the coolant ate through the metal tubes and leaked out. RV fridges seem to have had problems with coolant causing corrosion since new regulations in the mid '90 s. Norcold and Dometic fridges seem to have a 10 year or less life span before they have problems.
You should be able to find out how old that fridge is. Take a look for the serial number and model number sticker inside the door of the fridge. Now if they have replaced JUST the cooling unit, you need to find that information by pulling off the outside door and looking at the bottom backside of the fridge for any serial/model info.

RE: 3 way Refrigerator Troubleshooting

I'm not that much of an expert on troubleshooting but I seem to remember that an RV fridge needs DC power to work. So check the house battery and see if it's charged and working.
You have several things that are "dead"..
Just because you are plugged into shore power electric, does not mean the RV is getting electric. There is a "storage" switch, usually located by the main door that cuts power to everything. Check to see that it's not switched to storage.
The next thing I look for is ground fault outlets. The bathroom usually has one and if it's tripped you need to reset it. Usually the ground fault will only shut down the electric to one side of the RV. So if the ground fault is on the driver's side of the coach, all the 110 outlets will be dead on that side.
The 12v lights will work even if the ground fault is tripped.

RE: How Do You Store Your Eggs?

I just keep them in the carton I bought them in...and as I use them up, I cut off the empty carton so it takes less and less room up in the fridge. (Usually use them up 4 at a time.) A dozen eggs usually lasts about two weeks on the road not because of spoilage or breakage but because we eat out more when we are traveling then when we stay put.
One suggestion I will make... is keep the carton in a plastic grocery bag. It's easier to pull out of the fridge without eggs hitting the floor... and easier to toss the carton in the end along with the last 4 egg shells.

RE: New Q on washer/dryer decision

We have a 30 amp Class A. Hubby wired our stackables to the same circuit as the basement air conditioner. ( I seldom use the A/C and when I do, I'm not running the washer or dryer.) It's been wonderful to be able to run them on a difference circuit than the rest of the appliances.
And btw... he put in an "extra" outlet in the kitchen area that is hooked to that A/C circuit as well. I can make coffee, toast and run the electric griddle all at the same time without any problems. (Just can't run the washer / dryer until after breakfast.)
Coffee maker is plugged into one side of the coach... Toaster is on the opposite side on the kitchen table.... Electric Griddle is plugged into extension cord running to the "extra" outlet. I have not blown a fuse in a long time.
I know that you have a higher end unit with 50 amps to run the house...but for those in a 30 amp rig reading this... just wanted to toss this out there.

RE: Anybody know a good GERD pillow/wedge?

I sleep on my left side. That's my only option for several reasons I won't go into. My first question... Have you gone to a Chiropractor? I was scheduled for surgery in 1994 and went to a chiropractor who in 10 minutes gave me such relief that I cancelled the surgery.
So that's where I'd send you first.
2nd. Find out about neutral water. Non acid water. I found a chiropractor that sells it. I buy 4 gallons at a time and it lasts me about a month. I drink other water too during the day but drinking this in the evening has been something that's helped a lot.
Don't get suckered into taking a bunch of "purple pills" to reduce acid. You need acid to digest food. You need to find a way to digest food faster. If you don't break down your food, you rob your body of all nutrition and you'll be tired all the time and wonder why.
Now... to answer your question about pillows. I've bought wedges and all kinds of pillows in various shapes and density. I use a pillow filled with syrofoam pellets... and a perfectly rectangular pillow (Sleep country has them on the beds and I talked a sales person to sell me one along with the mattress we bought a little over a year ago...and it's been really good.) and then I have a neck pillow. Not the horse shoe shaped one... the one that looks like a dog bone. So those are the 3 that I use for my head/shoulders. Along with those I have a long round pillow that is like a sofa pillow, and I put it between my knees to help the pain in my hips/back. After years of sleeping on my side...with my head elevated... and probably the extra weight I seem to put on each year doesn't help... the pillow between my knees has been required.
GERD will cause scarring in your throat if you don't figure out a way to stop it from happening. It could cause cancer in your throat, too. The scarring in my throat made it very difficult to swallow soft foods. Tuna fish on Toast got caught in my throat once and I almost passed out before it finally went down far enough for me to breath. Drinking an ounce or two of Cold Leaf processed Aloe a day (not the watery kind found in gallon jugs in Wal-Mart). you want the kind found in health food stores in quart bottles... that healed my throat and in about six months the scarring was reduced where I could swallow much easier.
I have sleep apnea, too, and sleep with a machine now. Big help. Life saving and life changing for me. Before that I had a few episodes where acid came up into my ear tubes, sinus area, mouth and my lungs ... quite the fun to wake up to that. Throat closing up so bad, it was very difficult to breath...and the pain was something else. SO... to much information, I know. But GERD will only get worse as you get older if you don't get a handle on it. Pillows help.
The Aloe and PH balanced water are worth looking into.

RE: Dog Restraints in Class C

Just google " dog restraint harness for car " and you'll see all kinds of harnesses to be used for seat belts. Since your pup wants to be on the floor you just need a short length of something between the buckled seat belt and the harness on your dog. A short wide STURDY strap with two quick disconnect fasteners should do it. Snap one to the buckled seat belt and the other to the harness (or run it in a loop so both ends snap to the harness and then it might be long enough to use as a leash.) but I wouldn't give him more than he needs.

RE: can dinette cushions be machine washed?

I'd opt for a good steam cleaning.... put the $100 into hiring it done and have him do the chairs and cushions. (When we had a stick house, I'd get the house cleaned and then offer $100 extra to do the couch, chairs and floor in the MH. It's a confined space and hard to work in... usually took them as long or longer to do the MH than it did to do the 3 rooms in the house.)

RE: What to do? HELLLLP!!!

I don't like the "overhang" and small windshield on a class C... I MUCH prefer the big open feeling I get sitting in the front seat of a Class A to view the scenery.
If you have your heart set on a class A with a slide... it's going to cost you over $20,000. But if you expect to spend most of your time outside once you get to your destination, you don't "need" a slide and there's decent rigs out there in the $15,000 range if you look for them.
I like the flat floor plan of a Class A. Easier to move around and you'll be less secluded from conversation as you drive. (of course, In your case...that might be a plus point for the class c....)

RE: Should We Get Fantastic Fans?

I don't know if there's power in the vent opening or not either... but if you can put a fantastic fan in the vent "towards the back" of the rig, do it. If you can put in a thermostatically controlled vent, I would encourage you to do that.
The Maxi covers over the vents are a must.

RE: Showering in RT

This thread is generated by someone "pulling our leg", right?
I don't think so. The OP asked a question...got some answers and then made the effort to post a thank you. I have to believe it was for real.
The first time I crawled into the shower in the 1988 Champion I had very little understanding about the hot water, water pump and ways (and NEED)to conserve water.
I quickly learned two things... 1. Check the water temperature at the sink to make sure the water was hot. (that also made sure the pump was on.) and 2. Water can go from hot to cold faster than it will go from cold to hot.
I do have one more bit of information... It really helps to make everyone in the rig aware that flushing a toilet or running water at the kitchen and bathroom sinks while I'm in the shower will not go unnoticed or unforgotten.
