RE: 5th Wheel Travel with Large Dogs

cape cod to alaska and back with the A&P dog (she swam in the Atlantic and Pacific)in a F350 extended cab. She'll be 14 this June (the dog not the F350) Bought a theraputic dog bed that fit the 3/4 seat she had lots of room, infact more than me as shotgun in the front with maps, snacks, gps, cameras, spotting scopes and my pocket book. She could stretch out or sit up and see the bears!!!

RE: Bird nest in pin box

after taking a nest of baby birds to the tire store and back we let them fleg and then fashioned a piece of hardware cloth for the opening so momma bird wouldn't get back in for a second batch.

RE: San Francisco Area RV Parks

stayed at Candle Stick last Sept in 5th wheel. Our daughter lives in SF. We were head South and East home from Alaska. It cost us more for 3 nights than it cost us to stay 2 months in Alaska. Don't be there when event going on at the stadium as they close the roads going in inorder to get people out (we were there a week end of a football game) and we couldn't get back to our camper till after 11 p.m. Not the nicest of areas and the owner was most unpleasant. Charged extra for us to stay because of the game and we were not even going to the game. Packed in like sardines couldn't even put out awning. Other than that keep in mind 49ers are moving from Candlestick this year also the Rv park does have a shuttle van service into and from China town which was convenient.

RE: There is always something to remind you of your inexperience

forgot to put the pin in the hold down for the canoe. It is mounted over the front of the F350 as we pull a 5ver. At 50 mi per hr. it lifted over the truck slid down to roof of the camper and sailed into the road behind us. Luckly no one coming behind us. Canoe a little dinged up but other than a trashed Maxx Vent camper not damaged. Did get the heart rate up!!

RE: New 5th wheel driving to Alaska

Road from Tok to Haines Junction is or was horrible. Furniture upside down and we had already spent 2 months traveling in Alaska so were not new to the roads. Max speed in places 20 mph. That said other than that stretch roads are mainly pretty good. You are draggin a longer rig by about 10 feet than we did and you may have problem in the national parks as many of the sites are on the smaller size. We boondocked and state parked most of alaska. :You will love it. Are you going to use the Marine Hwy. just remember they charge by the foot. We were 44 feet truck and camper and it cost us approx $1900 to go from Haines to Prince Rupert stopping in Juneau, Stitka, Ketchican and getting off in PR.We totalled 16533 miles plus the 900 on the ferry system. Can't wait to go back next year. Yellowstone this year. Any other questions don't hesitate to contact us.

bent axel

We bent an axel on our 5th wheel on our Alaska trip last summer. Tire on driver side wearing. Had replaced in Fairbanks. Dexter dealer in town very lucky. Anyway hit some aweful hwy conditions in Chicago on way home and again tire problem out side of Toledo. Luckily Walmart just off hwy so changed tire and bought 2 new just in case. We think axel(s) bent again. Anyway after talking to Dexter people they suggested upgrading to 5200 lb axels however that means new wheels, brakes, springs and tires all the way around. Lots of money. Contacted trailer repair company here in Mass. who suggested a 3500 special axel (still Dexter). Seems they upgrade from 2 3/8 to 3" (same size as 5200) however then all the other gear, springs etc would not have to be changed. Also they change everything for $500 per axel. Can buy for $280 and due myself but figured let them do it. Taking the 5ver in next Friday to have it evaluated before doing anything. Any suggestions or advise

RE: hydrogen peroxide in fresh water tank

vets recommend a shot of peroxide to make dogs puke if they've eaten something they should not have. Don't think I'd like to drink peroxide. Will try the awning trick when we open up camper. That is if it ever stops snowing here in New Eng.

RE: Worst Experience Ever with Camping World Service Department

we had rude personnel when we dealt with Good Sam last May when our camper burned. Have not and will not renew subscription. Also their camping discounts are a joke.

RE: Anyone Drive a Dynamax motorhome to Alaska ?

we did the trip last summer from Mass. to Alaska, we we in 5th wheel. Agree about the bug guard we had quiet a collection when we washed it off. We also but protection covers on our head lights and fog lights. No cracked windows or lights gas or diesel available just bring your wallet. Enjoy Enjoy it (alaska) is awesome.

RE: Hwy 1 and 101 California

we did it this fall from Oregon to SanFran. in 28ft 5ver pulled by Ford F350 many signs said if length from 5th wheel pin to rear tire was over 30 ft it was not recommended. Road is steep and many sharp turns with 10 mph speeds. Husband said the rear of camper made it around some corners by inches. Law of averages ment we always met someone coming the other way on one the Kiss your a..s corners. But once we came out on the ocean from the redwoods it was gorgeous but still scarey. We did this on our way back to east coast from Alaska. It was white knuckles in places and I wasn't driving. My husband loved it.

RE: hauling fifth wheel with canoe

we carried a 14 ft canoe from Cape Cod to Alaska and back. T bar attached to front bumper and rack attached at back of cab to accept stern of canoe. Lots of tie downs and bungies. A little hairy when you get a real head wind.

RE: Planning a trip to Alaska?

awesome we did the trip last summer Cape Cod to Alaska and back hope to do it again in 2014 We too loved Haines stayed in same camp ground. We did a lot of boondocking and would do more next time. We did over 16000 miles so your $$$amounts are pretty true. We did not have problems entering Canada other than having to renew our gun permit that expired (they are good for 60 days only)our problems came when we reentered the USA thats another story entirely. We did take our dog (too old to chase bears) we saw lots of them. We left east coast in May and returned in Oct.

RE: Going to AK - Should I carry a full spare tire and rim?

we did Massachusetts to Ak and back last summer. We had a mounted spare for the F350 and one for the 5ver. We also carried an unmounted tire (under the bed in the camper) In the total 16533 mi we had only one flat just outside of Toledo OH on our return.

RE: Need Trip Planning Ideas to and from Alaska

we did the trip the opposite way leaving from Haines and ending in Prince Rupert. Everyone told us you had to make reservations months in advance yada yada. Well we walzed into the terminal in Haines and walked out with tickets to Juneau, Sitka, Ketchican and Prince Rupert. They just asked us how long we wanted to spend in each port. Total cost of around $1900.00 that included one night with berth from Sitka to Ketchican, 28' 5th wheel pulled by Ford F350, two passengers and the DOG. Check out the special fares. We could pick any 4 ports and stop and get off as we wanted. :You will love the SE of Alaska. Can't wait to go back in 2014.

RE: Rig Destroyed by Fire at The Reef

I feel so bad for those people it happened to us on our way to Alaska last May. Pulled into a Cabellas in Mitchell SD went in to shop and 20 min later our 5ver & 2 cats were gone. Luckily we got the F350 out as it had our Lab in it. One thing we had in lost 5ver and I insisted in replacement was a small safe bolted under the bed. Passports and money may have been smokey but we had them. We lost everything. Thank God for good people of Cabellas who gave us clothes and hotel and people of Mitchel SD. plus insurance. Never figured out what started ours but hubby thinks electrical. Have any of you ever looked at how these rigs are wired. Scarey.

RE: Leaving on May 15, 2013....

we did the trip last summer even the total lost of our 5ver and 2 cats didn't stop us. Cape Cod to Alaska and back we did 16533 mi plus 1000 on Marine Hwy. Someone mentioned Haines,Juneau,Sitka,Ketchican & Prince Rupert. That 10 day trip was worth it all. Try not to think of the vastness of the whole trip just enjoy each day as they unfold. Alaska is magnificent as is the Yukon. Hope to be able to redo trip in 2014 minus the fire of coarse!!!Contact us if need questions asked. Fuel expensive so what. You can camp just about anywhere for free and NO ONE BOTHERS YOU. Only said no to hubby regarding one scetchy camping spot. I called it Deliverance!!!
