RE: Niagara Falls

We did it in 4 nights and could have done another night or two. It was a lot of fun. I'd recommend your 4 day option. The CA side has the best views but the NY side has the great state park (worth a day). I also was very happy I decided to get some original Buffalo Wings at Anchor Bar (about 30 min drive from the Falls).

RE: Supplies for your Toy Hauler/Trailer

Most important for packing is the 3 B's: Bacon, Butter, Beer.
Everything else is optional.

RE: GPS

There are a myriad of options out there but I'd try to get a "last generation" model with lifetime updates.
I'd only buy Garmin. TomTom is horrific in my experience.
I'd buy based on parameters - the latest ones should have:
Spoken street names (text to speech)
Correct lane identification for complex interchanges (awesome feature)
Flat profile for packing if needed
Lithium ion battery if for some reason disconnected from power
Traffic updates
Under $150 or 200 unless that is not a concern
For RVers, there are also options for truckers that includes height limits in navigation and truck routes.

RE: $18k - What would you buy?

No slide - speaking from experience, for the love of all that is holy and sacred, make sure your sofa is parallel to the length of the RV rather than perpendicular. We had one which was perpendicular and right next to the entry door and you couldn't sit for 3 minutes without having to adjust or move for somebody or generally make way.

RE: Tent camping in/around Yellowstone, without generators

I get sick of generators too. I recommend earplugs rather than to miss out on a wonder of the world. Try to ease up on it though I completely understand it can be hard to filter out.

RE: pop-up to alaska

I know multiple families that LIVE in a tent ALL SUMMER LONG until the campground closes, in salmon territory. Never an issue.
OK I'm moving there now.

RE: Toliet paper

I would guess that 90% of your searches came up with posts extolling others to use the search engine. I was looking for a computer so I wanted to find out what was the best one. So I googled it and got a 486. Did I do well?
Scott 1000 for me.

Sounds like a small claims case to me. Difficult to collect if one. May be one of those life lessons. Sorry. A confirmation of how to tell when a salesman is lying.

RE: fuel economy

I've found with gas that instead of worrying how much weight the gas or the water is taking up, it's how aggressively you take the hills and keeping at a safe and reasonable speed that has the most impact. 62mph WILL be better mpg than 70. But an appreciable amount.
I actually get about 18 mpg. 9 coming and 9 going.

RE: Gift For Park Manager - Cigar Help

Pretty much no Romeo y Julieta or Macanudos - those are beginner sticks unless you can find the Cubanos. I'm a huge fan of good Nicaraguan or Dominican Republics. Long as he isn't smoking Swisher Sweets he'll be impressed with such a gift. Cigars International gets a lot of flak from the aficionado community but they have done fine by me so far. If you can wait for shipping, you can get a sampler of 10+ excellent sticks for the price of 2 or 3 moderate sticks at a brick and mortar.

RE: Campfires: Love them or hate them?

I could really go either way with a fire but they usually last so long so if I want to catch a movie or read during a campout then that is severely limited by a fire. But a fire is wifey's ritual and I would not deny her that with all she deals with me. Fire it is. Ideally with hard wood.
Of course if it's a bunch of dudes that's different. Fire and beers all night. That is followed by someone jumping the fire followed by various acts of one upsmanship ultimately leading to flashing lights and sirens from one or more of fire trucks, ambulance, police, ranger, etc. Good times.

RE: You can can dry camp at Walmart for free.

It's nice that people like Stormlaw are willing to pass helpful advice on. I'd rather err on the side of helpful info than suppressing it and a friendly note that not all Wally's allow it.
The search engine in this forum is DREADFUL and outdated and near useless for reasons I could not count if i wanted to.

RE: Ford 460 Owners - who has NOT had broken exhaust bolt/leak?

Thanks, all.
The verdict? Turns out the unit already had the exhaust bolt issue - fixed with new bolts but no headers. Bummer. How long will it last?

Ford 460 Owners - who has NOT had broken exhaust bolt/leak?

I'm considering buying a Ford 460 based motorhome. The exhaust broken exhaust bolt causing leaks and requiring tremendous cost and work to fix is a bit unnerving.
Are there any tips to prevent this without resorting to replacing with headers? Is it only when the engine is run hot then shut down without cooling? Does anyone know the odds of this happening?
Who has not had any problems with the bolts and has put significant miles on a stock engine?
Thank you.

RE: Diesel Engine Years to Avoid

Older Cummins (I think 12v?) had a "killer dowel pin" which could be fixed. If fixed, solid.
Curious what happens w the 6.0. Could the fixes that are known help now? Hope to see a follow up. Good luck!

RE: Showers in Yellowstone

I stayed at Grant Village and the showers there were great. They are coin operated but had sufficient water pressure, duration and temperature. The area for shaving/brushing/etc was also very roomy. I suspect there are other campgrounds with showers but GV was awesome. I vaguely recall that they may even rent towels for a very fair price? Great for dry campers.

RE: 1994 jayco 1207

You might get better responses on a popup specific site. Search Popup Explorer. I had a 1996 1206 in excellent condition. It had a shower and was awesome. I've said before and I'll say again - best fun we've had in a trailer and we've had a 27' and a toy hauler and 3 popups now.
If it's in excellent, and I mean excellent condition, it's a good deal. You'll know immediately when you look at it, smell it, get an idea of the maintenance and cleanliness habits of the prior owner, etc. Make sure every function works and it may be a good deal.
Popups sell fast - so if it's nice maintained, don't be afraid. That is on the high end but if it's maintained, that is well worth it.
