RE: gernrator has black sticky oil

The "black" part doesn't sound bad. It's not uncommon for diesel engines to turn their oil black pretty soon after an oil change. Not all do, but lots do. On the other hand, "sticky" doesn't sound good. If the oil is actually sticky and not just oily, then I agree with Turbo Diesel Dude about getting the oil flushed and changed, or at least changed, run and then changed again. If the oil really is that bad, it sounds like it was not changed for a long time. If you decide to buy, you should probably consider the cost of a rebuild of the generator when you agree on a price.

RE: Ever Been Asked to Leave?

That reminds me of the time my parents needed a place to park their TT overnight while visiting me (I had no room at all). They asked a police officer in the very small town nearby, and he suggested the police department parking lot. Can't get much safer than that!

RE: Beginner Fender Benders

It sounds to me like you need to learn where the edges of your rig are. If you can find a big, empty parking lot or vacant field, you might try setting up some traffic cones and practicing your maneuvers.
VetMan has a really good point - don't be afraid to get out and look. I have done that quite a few times, just to make sure I'm heading in the right direction and have plenty of clearance.
Don't necessarily trust bystanders to help. My parents were directed into a gas station overhang once by a helpful bystander. As they say, trust but verify.

RE: Never again Directv rant

We have DirecTV and are generally satisfied with the actual delivery of programming. However, we also had what I consider the worst customer service experience we have ever had with any company a couple of years ago. We hassled over a bill and payments for months, and every time we talked to a service rep, we had to start all over again from the very beginning.
DirecTV and Dish Network have tried to merge in the past and will probably try again in the future.

RE: Home Theatre Systems for Dummies -- Help

I think you can use a mid-grade home theater system and it will do a pretty good job in an RV. I agree that a blu-ray player is a good idea, even if the home theater system has a regular DVD player. You will love the higher resolution on your 1080p TV. I installed a home theater system in our older Class A. The front speakers were pretty easy. One of the rear speakers was also easy because I could run the wires through cabinets on the non-slide side. The slide side was harder. I ended up using self-adhesive cable channels from Lowes. I ran the channel along the wall-ceiling corner. It was not a perfect solution, but it worked. The subwoofer can go pretty much any place you have room. I put ours behind the center console. I ran the wire down the trim panel at the side of the windshield.

RE: Sound deadening properties of Reflectix or other materials

Commercially-available sound deadening materials do tend to be expensive for large areas, although they work pretty well. Have you considered doing something like gluing foam insulation on the roof? I think it could deaden some of the higher pitches because it could damp those vibrations. I'm not sure of the best glue, because I think you would need good contact pretty much everywhere.

RE: Mercedes 926 Engine Oil Change HELP ASAP

I have never seen a rubber washer on an oil drain plug. I have a few that take no washer and have had some that take a metal washer. The oil change instructions always say to replace the washer, but I have found that over many miles and many oil changes, there has been no leak from a reused metal washer. I'm not sure I would expect that from a rubber washer.

RE: Ethnic Food....

I wish you New Mexicans would stop talking about your chiles. Either that or send me some.
We can't get New Mexico-style food around here in Georgia and Alabama. All the Mexican restaurants serve a different kind of "Mexican" food. Don't get me wrong - I like it. But it's not like what you get in New Mexico.

RE: Mercedes 926 Engine Oil Change HELP ASAP

I kind of wondered about a rubber gasket on an oil drain plug. I think the metal washer was what was needed.

RE: Newly Weds: RV Park Adventur Begins!!(Stationary Fulltimers)

You can wrap the water hose with electric heat tape and also use the foam insulation tubes you find at the home store to insulate the water hose. If you don't want to bother with that, do what Golden_HVAC said and fill your freshwater tank and drain the hose. Then use water out of your own tank. Keep the cabinet doors open if the temperature drops very low (low 20s maybe?) to keep the water pipes from freezing. You can move the heaters around while you're up to keep yourselves comfortable, and then put them near the water tank and water lines when you go to bed. I found that an electric blanket let me sleep comfortably in a cold bedroom. That allowed me to aim the warm air directly towards the kitchen sink cabinet on the coldest nights. Also, do load swapping if you can't keep every electrical appliance on at the same time. If you need the microwave, turn off one heater. If you heat water with electricity, turn on the water heater and turn off one heater.

RE: Ford V-10 mileage

Has any one noticed any change in mileage, with the summer gas and the winter gas
One thing I have noticed is the higher the Ethenol the lower my mileage is
This is consistent with what I have read in other places because ethanol has a lower energy content per unit volume than gasoline.

RE: Reminder - Update your Verizon "PRL"

What "programming" is updated? All I can find out about *22899 is that it bypasses the automated voice asking you to choose an option and goes directly to option #2, which is updating the prl. I did find one site that says it programs a new phone.

RE: Reminder - Update your Verizon "PRL"

Verizon's web site has some information about this and instructions on how to do it. The web site says *228. I just did it for the first time in a while. There was some very scratchy "hold" music while it reprogrammed. It took about 30 seconds, and then the phone reset itself after I hung up.

RE: Question About Winter Use of RV

I have been staying in several different RVs over the last few years when i work away from home. I have stayed in an Airstream, a 5th wheel, and a Class A. I had my Airstreams's fresh water tank freeze once in a very cold snap, but there was no damage. All I ever did was leave an electric heater on in the RV in cold weather. On especially cold nights I left all the cabinet doors open. I was in northeast Alabama, where it reaches freezing fairly often in the winter but seldom gets much below the upper 20s.

RE: Ford V-10 mileage

I wonder if there is any correlation between the type of C and the mileage. Do C's with nicely faired (no overcab bunk) get better mileage than C's with an overcab bunk? There has to be some effect from the better aerodynamics, but it might not be enough to make a difference. Any thoughts?

RE: campground or other near Rome Georgia

There is a closer campground in an area called Texas Valley just north of Rome. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources web site gives some information about it. Check the visitor's guide at the website and it gives camping information, directions and a phone number.

RE: Kellys Blue Book For RVS

I think the NADA guide is a decent starting point. I usually then go to the online RV classified sites and check asking prices. Then I consult my gut and try to come up with a reasonable price to ask. I agree that the asking price is just that.

RE: Hold off on that GPS purchase...

Gdlow, I was with a friend with a cell-phone-based GPS once. We were looking for directions to a restaurant, and we found the restaurant before his phone showed anything. That may be unusual, but the fact is that a cell phone GPS has to communicate with a central location to get all its information, while a dedicated GPS unit has all its information right in your hand all the time. It's bound to be faster.
