RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

I did want to ask somthing we work for timekeepers we get 250 gal. of water a week. that just barely enough it seems. is this the norm? we have a washer and dryer but can't use it just not enough water for it. Think outside the box and find out who services the rig. Once we "bribed" the water company driver with some brownies and cookies we never had to worry about water again.

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

Then we will gate guard in the winter and play in the summer. After a year and a half on gates that is just what we plan to do-heading out just before Memorial day for a few weeks off. We were looking at rotating between a campground gig and working a gate; but the pay and commitment they're looking for is not for us.

RE: Reasons for being a gate attendant or not!

The process just to become eligible to bid on a COE contract was exhausting and over complicated. Once we received the bid sheet we found the hours/days of work (161) without a break unacceptable. Additionally on your time off they wanted you tied to a phone and no more than fifteen minutes away. Also we would have been responsible for this ridiculously long list of supplies. There were also reports to fill out, expense sheets, etc. etc. And the pay was awful. We were sorely disappointed after putting all the effort into it.

Lots of information here on most of the companies but nothing on Primo and only one or two for J&G or Swift. Anyone have information they can share on well they service their guards? We have worked for J and G for over a year. Great pay and good people to work for.

then the water tank hose came off and pumped it dry. didn't know it till the next day because of all the mud from the storm. Highly recommend you use your external pump and fill your internal water tank as needed; shutting off the valve to the big tank the rest of the time. IF you have internal tanks.

It is a dirty ,hot job but it did pay well, We are not going to do it again in Texas Exceed the field superintendents expectations and keep the land owner happy and you'll get better gates and stay working. You'll also make more which makes the dust, mud and dry skin tolerable.

Corps of Engineer Park Attendant job questions

We are hoping to spend the summer near Branson, Mo and have done all the paperwork to be eligible to bid on COE contracts. We just received a solicitation to bid on a job and are a bit concerned about all the materials they require you to provide. We would appreciate advice from anyone who has done this work.

For those who are working gates now and have motor homes, how do you keep your propane tank filled? It's problematic and requires pre-planning. We fill when we get below or near a half tank. There is a large facility outside of Karnes City and near Von Ormy. You have to search around on the net and ask the locals. We get about a year of use out of our internal tank.

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

Gatekeeper; We finally left the gate. The reasons we left are twofold. The dust was killing us. We were positioned just 20' from a dirt road that was the route to at least 4 other wells and the dust was so bad that we were having a hard time breathing. Unfortunately that is part and parcel of gate guarding. We literally shovel the motorhome out periodically. Dust and grime covers everything within 12 hours or less. My DW spent a couple of thousand dollars getting treated for breathing issues during the summer. There were days here where you could not see more than about 15-20 feet in front of you. Our entreaties to various officials of both the exploration and drilling companies fell on deaf ears. OCCASIONALLY we would get watered down. It is better now, but breathing and visibility are still a problem. We need the job and don't know anyone who pays as much so we just "cowboy up".

Still stacked up? Looking to head that way before x-mas.... I would call ahead and make sure a gate is available. Rumor has it that things might pick up after New Years.

We are Gate Guarding in TX. We are hooked up to a new 20k generator Cat with 50 amp. It is running at 63 hz instead of 60 hz. Have any of you had any problem with damage from this? Our clocks are running fast. I'm concerned that it may damage our electronics. We use a voltage regulator and the voltage seems to be fine. This is not uncommon with generators. A tech should be able to adjust it. We have found our electric clocks to be unreliable out here and have battery clocks. To answer your question-the chance of damage should be neglible.

I once was 18 and fearless-don't know how I survived those years. This is so sad and tragic. Unfortunately we have had many fatalities around the Tilden area too. The police presence around here is almost oppressive at times.

With the nondisclosure agreement firmly in place, I have concerns for how folks are going to get any sort of training in the field. I have resurrected my blog as a training aide if anyone wants REAL information about how to go about doing the job properly. Comments are welcome and encouraged as there are many terrific ideas that others bring to the table. However, no information that would violate a nondisclosure agreement will be allowed, and will be deleted immediately. Here's the link... Gate Guarding 101 Well , I think it's BS and some are overreacting. I'm sure glad I didn't have to sign anything like that. I would hope that the majority of us would not need a signed document to guide us in what we should or shouldn't say. Like they say "The two percent make it extremely difficult for the ninety eight percent to do anything". Anyway, my blog will remain active and anyone who wishes to contact me can do so. www.workampingstories.blogspot.com

The mercury has hit 106 here the last few days. They had a spud meeting this a.m. and Alterra (I think I spelled that right) put on a shrimp boil. Whoo Hoo! Boiled shrimp, new potatoes and corn. Almost made the temps bearable. Our EOG boys sure are good to us!

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

The work prospects here in the Texas oil patch, now stretch well into the 22nd century. If allowed to recover this resource, our energy prices should remain stable throughout our lifetime. For those looking for employment, they are holding job fairs weekly in the south Texas area and the jobs go begging, as few want to work. Truck drivers pay is in the $29.50/hr range to start, with local runs only and NO ONE wants to work. Certified rig workers, who only work 6 months a year, are making $100k to $200k annually and no one wants to work.....:?The operative phrase is if allowed. Let's see what the pinky salamander and the snowy egret crowd have to say. Or the "sky is falling" frac=earthquake crowd. Sorry, I am in a kind of pessimistic mood today. BTW, a pipe welder in our RV park said he's making $75 an hour. WOW!! I keep hearing rumors of gates in the $200 a day range-we'll see. It's interesting that the gate guard companies would rather put service folks on a gate rather than raise pay to attract new blood. I know personnel shortages happen every summer; but it appears especially acute this year.

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

As for a single person on a gate....I do not know how that works...Not the norm but because of the need...there are people trying to man the gate being single person. Well, they are now using service people in trucks due to the lack of guards. I manned a gate alone as an emergency fill in for ten days. That was about my limit. You really need a closet full of clean clothes and cabinets full of groceries before you start. The ability to cat nap is a bonus. My company was very supportive and offered to get me relief if I needed it. A lot of guards/companies arrange for some one to relieve them for shopping or laundry when working alone. As an aside; let me say that showers and bathroom breaks can be challenging when working alone. ;)

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

It seems like the guard companies that are paying higher have some very busy gates, so think about it before you change over. More money might mean a lot more work. Well; if you're getting paid more, so what. Actually, we have found the gates we work to be quite similar to the "lower paid" gates. Our equipment has been first rate, too. As I have said previously, loyalty or whatever is keeping you where you are, is admirable. I; however, am here to make money and an extra paycheck a month goes a long way. Just sayin'!
