RE: Dealer damaged camper

I will tell you this- count your freaking blessings! My dealer (closed now- Hahahaha) bent the******out of my hitch with their rigged up forklift attachment and when I showed up to pick up the trailer after 2 months (still wasn't fixed either) I found the damage and they tried to tell me it was like that when you brought it in!!!! I lost my freaking mind! They told me to hook up and get off the property basically and all the did was bend it back and there is not much more you can do once they go bankrupt and close the place....

RE: Custom 5th wheel trailer having issues.

Inner tire wearing on inner edge? Axle is deflecting causing it to "bow" in the center and up at the outside which is angling the tires and causing the inner tire to handle most of the load and also to be tilted. You SHOULD be able to determine this with a good digital angle indicator on the WHEEL and see if they are tilting in toward the center of the trailer at the top and out at the bottom. This sounds likes what you are going to find to me with inner tires wearing like that, it's either going to be the axle or the mounts are uneven or the hubs are bent.

RE: '07 CTD oil change

BUT-------- if it was me and mine, I would change it now and put in a nice Fleetgard Stratapore filter and the nice high quality CJ-4 engine oil of choice and double check everything on the truck including axle fluid levels, trans fluid, power steering, grease all lube points, replace fuel and air filters, etc. just to get a nice fresh starting point for my maintenance program.

RE: '07 CTD oil change

Most of the dealers actually run the recommended OIL which is VALVOLINE from the factory and a few (like this one maybe) likely source VALVOLINE filters also. The actual "Mopar" filters that most of the dealers are going to use on the Cummins is a Fleetgard filter with Mopar sticker on it made by Fleetgard and sold with the Mopar name on it for sale at dealerships so they can charge more for it- no joke. After a few oil change cycles the engine will always retain enough soot and such to "blacken" the oil almost immediately. It's no big deal, in a diesel black oil is not necessarily "dirty" like in a clean little gas engine.

RE: cummins shake

Don't shut down with the doors open. I make sure everyone either stays in or is out and the doors are shut before shutting down. I had heard that this was an old wives' tale until I met someone who had swung open the door and shut down only to have the top hinge break on his door. Then I just had to see and opened my door and watched how much it moves out at the end when it shuts down. It moved enough to convince me to always shut all the doors before shutting off the engine. The little belt chirp and rattle at shut down are just that large rotating mass stopping really fast and a whole lot of energy getting absorbed all at once.

Every other oil change= 10,000 miles for fuel filter in mine.

RE: Dead Animals on the Road

There are plenty of times I hit a deer or other smaller animal, but I have to tell the most memorable one was not when I was driving. My dad and uncles drove trucks when I was younger and I was with my dad and my uncle was in front of us and we saw this "POOF" of fur and red mist blow up on the right side of his truck and as we went by I saw the carcass rolling down the bank off the shoulder. THEN WE SMELLED IT! It was a dead carcass that was well rotted in the heat of summer somewhere down south. Somehow he had slid over just far enough out of the lane to hit what everyone else had been missing for at least a few days. It had literally exploded b/c it was swollen and rotting! When we caught the smell dad promptly caught another gear and took the lead and when we stopped for fuel my poor uncle was out there in the truck wash trying to get the "worst" of it off. Needless to say that one still gets a chuckle out of him and dad 20+ years later.

RE: Cost of 2010 compliant diesels

Ya know, the wife harassed me in '05 that this would be the last new truck I ever bought and I had better get what I want. Little did she know that I was fully prepared for just that and got what I wanted to a tee b/c I knew about the systems coming and the additional costs then. My only concern is how much a new cab will cost when it falls apart around the engine or how much a new trans will cost me when it finally gives up getting beat to death behind the Cummins?

RE: tow capacity: fail

You'll be fine, just get a good brake controller since we all know that the trailer stops the trailer and the tv stops only the tv. Don't worry about that smell when you take off, it's just the engine breaking in and burning off "coatings" on metal parts.

RE: Firestones gone- Kuhmo or Goodyears?

I love my BFG's and they are rated the same as the Michelins that come on the truck as standard equipment, the BFG's are just an upgrade they call "all terrain tires" but they are not very aggressive and wear great.

RE: Who hates diesel?

Mine is louder than stock (cost of opening up the exhaust to get temps down)
Mine smokes (when I want it to I guess, but not all the time)
Mine will out pull ANY gas pick up truck you want to put it up against and will burn less fuel doing so
I like my diesel, I liked my gas trucks too and they all have done what I bought them for. To those who damn gas truck owners just b/c they run a little slower up hill or burn more fuel to get there- WHO CARES????? It's not me and as long as they aren't holding me up I do not care what they pull with.

RE: Thinking about going diesel?

I wanted it, I can afford it therefore I drive a diesel when towing my 5'er whether I absolutely need it or not. Kind of like when I go out for steak I like to have Prime Rib and only from a few places that are not dirt cheap but I also don't buy 100 dollar filet medallions either just like my diesel truck is an SLT trim. Hmm, seems like I'm kind of demanding but not overly fru fru (I think that wording is funny). By the way, when NOT towing my 5'er I am driving the company's truck to commute and for work travel so that doesn't count.

RE: Are you a T.V. beta tester?

I beta tested a 6.0L in 2004 (second year technically). I was a fool ONCE. Note- 2005 Dodge and it's in the driveway running as good (better now) than new and there is no testing to worry about.

RE: Not necessarily a tow vehicle, but impressive nonetheless

The horsepower rating is derived by- # of horses that would be required to pull a sled with the same weight as the rocket to a speed that would equal the degree of tilt it created in the earth's rotation which is .000021 and that is derived from the angle of the sun as it changes in relation to the pressure on the rails that the rocket is attached to.
Or- maybe they just guessed a really big number.

RE: If all things are equal...

I would have to say going from a 25' tongue pull to a 28' fifth wheel is the only experience I have and while they were close one is much taller and heavier than the other but definitely pulls much better with less sway and better "behavior" and is also easier to back up (for someone with experience with tractor trailers and other such trailers). So, I have to go with the fifth wheel being the better performer (why I have kept mine). Yes it is subjective, each person will notice things differently or put more emphasis on certain behaviors than others.

RE: Best tow vehicle to pull about 13,000 pounds (up hills)?

Pyrometer and boost gauges are a must when towing heavy and really help with this kind of troubleshooting too.

RE: Best tow vehicle to pull about 13,000 pounds (up hills)?

Do not rev it up before letting out the clutch, that's just going to waste the clutch in a hurry and tear up driveline parts. When towing with a manual it's important to "think" like an auto trans/ computer does. If you are pulling in 6th and coming up a hill start to lose speed at WOT, then drop a gear and get the engine up into its power band (area where max torque meets max hp) which in that 6.0 is going to be around 2400-2800 RPM's to get max airflow and turbo boost vs torque and pulling power. There should really be very very few mountains (not hills here) that would require dropping to 4th in a manual 6 speed with a 325 HP engine pulling 12k lbs (figure 20k gross) except over 6% or if you start to overheat you might need to drop to 4th and back off the throttle a bit and slow down to keep it cool.
