RE: Shower drain leaks into basement.

There should be a thin rubber gasket between the shower floor and the drain flange in the bottom of the shower floor pan. Is it missing/damaged?
Its there. It was there all along.
The nut that holds the drain into the shower floor was cracked and loose. That was the source of the leak.
It probably cracked from the forces on it because the pipe could not flex with the shower floor. Now that there is some flex in the piping, everything should be fine. If the nut gives trouble again, I'll replace it with a heavier one.

RE: Shower drain leaks into basement.

I fixed the shower drain.
I replaced the ABS T where the shower drain trap goes into the main line with a rubber T. I also put a rubber coupler between the shower drain and the drain trap.
The two rubber pieces allow for a lot of flex without any undue strain on the pipes or the drain itself.
I have pictures if anyone needs to see them.
I was VERY lucky that the shower drain was easily accessible. Had it not been, this simple job would have been much, much worse.
Thanks for the replies and suggestions.

RE: Pin Box Arm Extension Length?

he answer is to cut the rear lower edge of the pin box frame on a 45 degree angle Absolutely, do not cut anything related to the hitch on your trailer. Someone engineered that structure and its like that for a reason.

RE: Air Bags

R4tech on my trucks.. Static level loaded or unloaded is nice, but the GM kits have the airbags two close to the ubolts, I failed one airbag outright, the installed modified the mounts to move the airbags farther from the ubolts and it was better. The MAJOR issue I have with the r4tech is a lack of warning on low air pressure. I had the compressor fail on a roadtrip, as the rear end dropped about 1 inch low it rubbed 1/2 way through the airbag on the ubolts, some of the white fiber reinforcing is damaged. A second pressure switch attached to an buzzer under the dash will fix that.
The more I hear about that system the more I don't like it.
The bag should be able to go flat and ride on the internal bumper with zero problems.
EVERYONE knows that air bag systems have to be designed so that the bag is NEVER touched by anything. Under any circumstances. Clearance is paramount.

RE: Air Bags

My old truck had a custom 4 link air suspension using long travel HDT bags. It worked very well.
My new truck has leafs and I hate it. I'll be either building another 4 link system or something like the R4 Tech system.

RE: Air Bags

The rear of my truck is nothing but air. No steel springs at all. I love them and will buy again.
What are you running ?

RE: Mig or tig weld on frame?

Most heavy ag and earthmoving equipment is MIG welded these days. Just like any other welding process, if done right, it works great.
My biggest concern about welding on the frame is burning down the trailer. I welded in some battery boxes with light welds on the lower flange and just about had an incident.
If heat and fire is an issue, TIG has the most concentrated heat and no sparks.
Metal prep is more important with MIG and TIG than stick.

RE: Shower drain leaks into basement.

Me2 - We have a 2012 Chaparral FBH model with same issue. Actually broke the rigid drain pipe in half and dumped all the water on the floor in the storage area. The 55 amp converter was partially submerged....lucky we had another 1/2 inch to go before it went zap! Fixed problem with a car radiator rubber hose and 2 clamps, and expanding foam under shower pan. Bingo. That is exactly what I want to do.
How did you get the foam in ? Which foam did you use ?
How were these shower floors supposed to be installed ?
How did you leave the drain trap in AND use the rad hose ? now that I think about it, I bet you left the trap attached to the shower drain and then replaced the long horizontal piece of plastic pipe with the rad hose. How did you get enough clearance to cut it ?
Great fix if that is what you did.
Notified Coachmens warranty guy but nothing was done. Have had several other issues with the unit. Good luck
We have too. Its STUPID that such a nice trailer has issues like these. An extra little bit of attention would totally take care of this and a couple other things. Other than the issues, we totally love our trailer.
Does your bedroom slide leak when out ?
Thanks for the reply.

RE: Shower drain leaks into basement.

mine did i have a service port at bottom outside shower just had to tighten up nut on drain. Been fine since
Did you seal it with anything ?
But if the drain is tight to the shower floor and the shower floor flexes, isn't it going to stress the plastic piping ?

RE: Shower drain leaks into basement.

We had a leak in our rigid tubing for our shower. DH replaced it with PEX...a flexible tubing. So far, no more leaks.
What size PEX did you use ? The drain plumbing is large diameter plastic pipe.
I was thinking of using some sort of flex pipe, like that from a washing machine drain.

Shower drain leaks into basement.

The shower drain on our Chaparral 355 leaks into the basement.
Luckily, the drain is right above the basement door, so its easy to work on.
I don't understand how its supposed to not leak. The shower floor is flexy. If you step near the drain, it clearly moves. The plastic plumbing underneath is pretty much rigid. How is one supposed to seal a stationary drain fixture to a flexy shower floor ?
Anyone else have this issue ?

RE: Goodyear china bomb attacks another!

Our trailer is a 2010 also and came with GY Marathon 235/80R16 LRDs. I swapped them out for generic LT235/75R16 LRE steering tires. So far they have worked great.
Our trailer has 11,000 pounds on the trailer axles.

RE: Pacific NW suggestions ? (beaches, aquariums, campsites)

There is so much to do in these areas ! This is going to be fun !
Where are the warmest ocean beaches ?
Does anyone know of a kite festival ? My son would love a kite festival !
Thanks for the replies. I have more homework to do !

Opinions on Lippert hydraulic leveling system ? Retrofits ?

I'm seeing more and more new trailers equipped with the Lippert hydraulic leveling system. 4 to 6 jacks per trailer.
I'm looking for information and opinions on these systems.
How long are the seals in the rams lasting ?
Do the hyraulic ram shafts flex or is the trailer held perfectly stable ?
Is ground clearance an issue if put in front of the wheels on a typical 5er ?
Has anyone retrofitted hydraulic landing gear to a 5er that came with the standard electric motor landing gear ?
How did you attach the rams to the frame ?

RE: Towing bass boat behind my fifth wheel

I have pulled small sail boats (Hobie 18, Laser, etc) behind a 32 and now 36+ 5er for years with no problems. I do it all the time.
Some tips.
1) You need good mirrors on the truck as the "train" is long.
2) You might want to put a camera on the back of the 5er so you can better see the back trailer, especially when backing up. And yes it can be done if you can see the back trailer.
3) You need good brakes on the 5er. If they are iffy, upgrade to hydraulic disks.
4) You need a tow vehicle with lots of power, especially if you are pulling in hills.
5) You really need to watch where you pull into because backing up is not always an option without unhooking the rear trailer.
Have fun !

RE: Pacific NW suggestions ? (beaches, aquariums, campsites)

Thanks for all the replies. I'll go through them and get back with questions.
Yeah, we realize the ocean is cold compared to the lakes we normally visit. Where would be some good lakes for swimming and kayaking ?
FYI, we have our own kayaks. We won't take the kids kayaking in the ocean.

Pacific NW suggestions ? (beaches, aquariums, campsites)

We are in the planning stages for spending a week the Pacific NW, in early August 2012. We will be visiting friends in Bellingham and from there our schedule is completely open.
We have 2 children ages 1.5 and 6 who love beach life and have never been to the ocean. We love to kayak as a family on warm lakes. My son and I love anything RC, especially scale planes. We love festivals, especially music festivals.
After spending a week in the PNW, we think we'll spend another week working our way east, possibly taking in Spokane and area ???? We are lothe to go too far south because we want to stay away from the heat as much as possible.
Any and all suggestions as to good campgrounds, activities, sights and events would be greatly appreciated.
